Our inheritance has fallen over to strangers, our houses to foreigners.

3 N oi siamo diventati orfani, senza padre, le nostre madri sono come vedove.

We have become orphans and fatherless; our mothers are like widows.

4 D obbiamo pagare per l'acqua che beviamo, la nostra legna l'abbiamo solo a pagamento.

We have had to pay money to drink the water that belongs to us; our wood is sold to us.

5 S iamo inseguiti con un giogo sul collo, siamo esausti e non abbiamo alcun riposo.

Our pursuers are upon our necks; we are weary and are allowed no rest.

6 A bbiamo teso la mano all'Egitto e all'Assiria, per saziarci di pane.

We have given the hand to the Egyptians and to the Assyrians to get food to satisfy.

7 I nostri padri hanno peccato e non sono piú, e noi portiamo la punizione delle loro iniquità.

Our fathers sinned and are no more, and we have borne their iniquities.

8 S chiavi dominano su di noi, nessuno può liberarci dalle loro mani.

Servants and slaves rule over us; there is none to deliver us out of their hands.

9 C i procuriamo il pane a rischio della nostra vita, davanti alla spada del deserto.

We get our bread at the peril of our lives because of the sword of the wilderness.

10 L a nostra pelle si è riscaldata come un forno per l'ardore della fame.

Our skin glows and is parched as from an oven because of the burning heat of famine.

11 H anno violentato le donne in Sion, le vergini nelle città di Giuda.

They ravished the women in Zion, the virgins in the cities of Judah.

12 I capi sono stati impiccati dalle loro mani, la persona dei vecchi non è stata rispettata.

They hung princes by their hands; the persons of elders were not respected.

13 I giovani sono stati messi a macinare, i ragazzi sono caduti sotto il carico delle legna.

Young men carried millstones, and boys fell under wood.

14 I vecchi hanno smesso di radunarsi alla porta, i giovani hanno smesso di suonare i loro strumenti.

The elders have ceased from the city’s gate, the young men from their music.

15 L a gioia dei nostri cuori è venuta meno, la nostra danza si è mutata in lutto.

Ceased is the joy of our hearts; our dancing has turned into mourning.

16 L a corona è caduta dal nostro capo; guai a noi, perché abbiamo peccato!

The crown has fallen from our head! Woe to us, for we have sinned!

17 P er questo si è ammalato il nostro cuore, per queste cose si sono oscurati i nostri occhi:

Because of this our hearts are faint and sick; because of these things our eyes are dim and see darkly.

18 p er il monte di Sion che è desolato, e vi scorazzano le volpi.

As for Mount Zion, which lies desolate, the jackals prowl over it!

19 M a tu, o Eterno, rimani per sempre, e il tuo trono di generazione in generazione.

But You, O Lord, remain and reign forever; Your throne endures from generation to generations.

20 P erché ci dimenticheresti per sempre e ci abbandoneresti per un lungo tempo?

Why do You forget us forever? Why do You forsake us so long?

21 F acci ritornare a te, o Eterno, e noi ritorneremo; ristabilisci i nostri giorni come In passato.

Turn us to Yourself, O Lord, and we shall be turned and restored! Renew our days as of old!—

22 C i hai forse interamente rigettati o sei tu grandemente adirato contro di noi?

Or have You utterly rejected us? Or are You exceedingly angry with us ?
