1 G uai a te che devasti anche se non sei stato devastato, che agisci perfidamente anche se non ti è stata usata perfidia! Quando avrai finito di devastare, sarai devastato, quando avrai finito di agire perfidamente, ti sarà usata perfidia.

Woe to you, O destroyer, you who were not yourself destroyed, who deal treacherously though they did not deal treacherously with you! When you have ceased to destroy, you will be destroyed; and when you have stopped dealing treacherously, they will deal treacherously with you.

2 O Eterno, abbi pietà di noi che speriamo in te. Sii il nostro braccio ogni mattina e la nostra salvezza, in tempo di avversità.

O Lord, be gracious to us; we have waited for You. Be the arm every morning, our salvation in the time of trouble.

3 A l rumore di una moltitudine fuggono i popoli, quando ti levi le nazioni si disperdono.

At the noise of the tumult, the peoples flee; at the lifting up of Yourself, nations are scattered.

4 I l vostro bottino sarà raccolto come si radunano i bruchi; come si precipitano le locuste così si precipiteranno su di esso.

And the spoil is gathered as the caterpillar gathers; as locusts leap and run to and fro, so leap upon it.

5 L 'Eterno è esaltato perché abita in alto; egli riempie Sion di equità e di giustizia,

The Lord is exalted, for He dwells on high; He will fill Zion with justice and righteousness (moral and spiritual rectitude in every area and relation).

6 e sarà la sicurezza dei tuoi giorni, la forza della salvezza, sapienza e conoscenza; il timore dell'Eterno sarà il suo tesoro.

And there shall be stability in your times, an abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge; the reverent fear and worship of the Lord is your treasure and His.

7 E cco, i loro eroi gridano di fuori, i messaggeri di pace piangono amaramente.

Behold, their valiant ones cry without; the ambassadors of peace weep bitterly.

8 L e strade sono deserte, non c'è piú alcun passante sulla strada. Egli ha rotto il patto, disprezza le città, non ha riguardo per alcun uomo.

The highways lie waste, the wayfaring man ceases. The enemy has broken the covenant, he has despised the cities and the witnesses, he regards no man.

9 I l paese è nel lutto e langue; il Libano è pieno di vergogna e svigorito; Sharon è come un deserto, Bashan e Karmel sono scossi violentemente.

The land mourns and languishes, Lebanon is confounded and withers away; Sharon is like a desert, and Bashan and Carmel shake off their leaves.

10 O ra mi leverò», dice l'Eterno, «ora sarò esaltato, ora mi innalzerò.

Now will I arise, says the Lord. Now will I lift up Myself; now will I be exalted.

11 V oi avete concepito pula, partorirete stoppia; il vostro fiato sarà un fuoco che vi divorerà.

You conceive chaff, you bring forth stubble; your breath is a fire that consumes you.

12 I popoli saranno come fornaci da calce, come rovi tagliati saranno bruciati nel fuoco.

And the people will be burned as if to lime, like thorns cut down that are burned in the fire.

13 O voi che siete lontani, udite ciò che ho fatto; e voi che siete vicini, riconoscete la mia potenza».

Hear, you who are far off, what I have done; and you who are near, acknowledge My might!

14 I n Sion i peccatori sono presi da spavento, un tremore si è impadronito degli empi: «Chi di noi potrà dimorare con il fuoco divorante? Chi di noi potrà dimorare con le fiamme eterne?».

The sinners in Zion are afraid; trembling seizes the godless ones. Who among us can dwell with that devouring fire? Who among us can dwell with those everlasting burnings?

15 C olui che cammina giustamente e parla rettamente, colui che disprezza i guadagni distorti, che scuote le mani per non accettare regali, che si tura gli orecchi per non udire parlare di sangue e chiude gli occhi per non vedere il male,

He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly, who despises gain from fraud and from oppression, who shakes his hand free from the taking of bribes, who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed and shuts his eyes to avoid looking upon evil.

16 c ostui dimorerà in luoghi elevati, le rocche fortificate saranno il suo rifugio; il suo pane gli sarà dato, la sua acqua gli sarà assicurata.

will dwell on the heights; his place of defense will be the fortresses of rocks; his bread will be given him; water for him will be sure.

17 I tuoi occhi contempleranno il re nella sua bellezza, vedranno un paese molto lontano.

Your eyes will see the King in His beauty; will behold a land of wide distances that stretches afar.

18 I l tuo cuore mediterà sui terrori passati: «Dov'è lo scriba? Dov'è colui che pesa? Dov'è colui che conta le torri?».

Your mind will meditate on the terror: Where is he who counted? Where is he who weighed the tribute? Where is he who counted the towers?

19 T u non vedrai piú quel popolo feroce, quel popolo dal linguaggio oscuro e incomprensibile, che balbetta una lingua che nessuno capisce.

You will see no more the fierce and insolent people, a people of a speech too deep and obscure to be comprehended, of a strange and stammering tongue that you cannot understand.

20 C ontempla Sion, la città delle nostre solennità! I tuoi occhi vedranno Gerusalemme, dimora tranquilla, tenda che non sarà piú rimossa, i suoi piuoli non saranno piú divelti e nessuna delle sue funi sarà strappata.

Look upon Zion, the city of our set feasts and solemnities! Your eyes shall see Jerusalem, a quiet habitation, a tent that shall not be taken down; not one of its stakes shall ever be pulled up, neither shall any of its cords be broken.

21 M a là l'Eterno nel suo splendore sarà per noi un luogo di fiumi e larghi corsi d'acqua, dove non giunge alcuna nave a remi e dove non passa alcun potente naviglio.

But there the Lord will be for us in majesty and splendor a place of broad rivers and streams, where no oar-propelled boat can go, and no mighty and stately ship can pass.

22 P oiché l'Eterno è il nostro giudice, l'Eterno è il nostro legislatore, l'Eterno è il nostro re; egli ci salverà.

For the Lord is our Judge, the Lord is our Lawgiver, the Lord is our King; He will save us.

23 L e tue corde sono allentate, non tengono saldamente l'albero e non spiegano piú le vele. Allora si spartirà la preda di un ricco bottino; gli zoppi stessi prenderanno parte al saccheggio.

Your hoisting ropes hang loose; they cannot strengthen and hold firm the foot of their mast or keep the sail spread out. Then will prey and spoil in abundance be divided; even the lame will take the prey.

24 N essun abitante dirà: «Io sono malato». Il popolo che vi abita otterrà il perdono della sua iniquità.

And no inhabitant will say, I am sick; the people who dwell there will be forgiven their iniquity and guilt.
