1 L a parola che l'Eterno pronunciò contro Babilonia e contro il paese dei Caldei per mezzo del profeta Geremia:

The word that the Lord spoke concerning and against Babylon and concerning and against the land of the Chaldeans through Jeremiah the prophet:

2 « Annunziatelo fra le nazioni, proclamatelo e innalzate una bandiera; proclamatelo e non nascondetelo. Dite: "Babilonia è presa. Bel, è coperto di vergogna, Merodak è infranto, le sue immagini sono coperte di vergogna, i suoi idoli sono infranti".

Declare it among the nations and publish it and set up a signal —publish and conceal it not; say, Babylon has been taken; Bel is put to shame, Merodach (Bel) is dismayed and broken down. images are put to shame, her idols are thrown down!

3 P oiché dal nord sale contro di lei una nazione che ridurrà il paese a un deserto e nessuno piú abiterà in essa; uomini e bestie fuggiranno, se ne andranno.

For out of the north there has come up a nation against her which will make her land desolate, and none will dwell there. They will have fled, they will be gone—from man even to beast.

4 I n quei giorni e in quel tempo», dice l'Eterno, «i figli d'Israele e i figli di Giuda verranno insieme; cammineranno piangendo e cercheranno l'Eterno il loro DIO.

In those days and at that time, says the Lord, the children of Israel shall come, they and the children of Judah together; they shall come up weeping as they come and seek the Lord their God.

5 D omanderanno della via di Sion verso cui volgeranno le loro facce, dicendo: "Venite, uniamoci all'Eterno, con un patto eterno, che non sia piú dimenticato

They shall ask the way to Zion, with their faces in that direction, saying, Come, let us join ourselves to the Lord in a perpetual covenant that shall not be forgotten.

6 I l mio popolo è stato un gregge di pecore smarrite; i loro pastori le avevano sviate, le avevano fatte smarrire sui monti. Sono andate di monte in colle e hanno dimenticato il luogo del loro riposo.

My people have been lost sheep; their shepherds have led them astray on mountains. They have gone from mountain to hill; they have forgotten their resting-place.

7 T utti quelli che le trovavano, le divoravano, e i loro nemici dicevano: "Non siamo colpevoli, perché hanno peccato contro l'Eterno, dimora della giustizia, l'Eterno, speranza dei loro padri".

All who found them devoured them; and their adversaries said, We are not guilty, because they have sinned against the Lord, their true habitation of righteousness and justice, even the Lord, the hope of their fathers.

8 F uggite di mezzo a Babilonia, uscite dal paese dei Caldei e siate come capri davanti al gregge.

Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and go forth out of the land of the Chaldeans; and be as the he-goats before the flocks.

9 P oiché ecco, io suscito e faccio salire contro Babilonia una moltitudine di grandi nazioni dal paese del nord, e si schiereranno contro di essa; di là essa sarà presa. Le loro frecce sono come quelle di un abile arciere; nessuna ritorna a vuoto.

For behold, I will raise and cause to come up against Babylon an assembly of great nations from the north country. They will equip and set themselves against her; from there she will be taken. Their arrows will be like an expert, mighty warrior and like his arrows—none will return in vain.

10 L a Caldea sarà abbandonata al saccheggio; tutti i suoi saccheggiatori saranno saziati», dice l'Eterno.

And Chaldea shall become plunder; all who plunder her shall be satisfied, says the Lord.

11 « Gioite e rallegratevi, o saccheggiatori della mia eredità, perché vi siete ingrassati come una giovenca che trebbia il grano e nitrite come forti destrieri.

Though you are glad, though you rejoice, O you who plunder My heritage, though you are wanton and skip about like a heifer at grass and neigh like strong stallions,

12 V ostra madre sarà grandemente svergognata, colei che vi ha partoriti arrossirà. Ecco, essa sarà l'ultima delle nazioni, un deserto, una terra arida, una solitudine,

Your mother shall be put to great shame; she who bore you shall blush and be disgraced. Behold, she shall be at the rear of the nations —a wilderness, waste, and desert.

13 A motivo dell'ira dell'Eterno non sarà piú abitata, sarà una completa desolazione; chiunque passerà vicino a Babilonia rimarrà stupito e fischierà per tutte le sue ferite.

Because of the wrath of the Lord she shall not be inhabited but shall be wholly desolate; everyone who goes by Babylon shall be appalled and hiss and mock at all her wounds and plagues.

14 S chieratevi tutt'intorno a Babilonia, o voi tutti tiratori d'arco. Tirate contro di essa, non risparmiate alcuna freccia, perché ha peccato contro l'Eterno.

Set yourselves in array against Babylon round about, all you archers. Shoot at her! Spare not the arrows, for she has sinned against the Lord.

15 M andate grida di guerra contro di essa tutt'intorno; ella si è arresa le sue fondamenta sono cadute, le sue mura sono crollate, perché questa è la vendetta dell'Eterno. Vendicatevi di lei. Fate a lei come essa ha fatto ad altri,

Raise the battle cry against her round about! She gives her hand and surrenders; her supports and battlements fall, her walls are thrown down. For this is the vengeance of the Lord: take vengeance on her; as she has done, do to her.

16 S terminate da Babilonia chi semina e chi impugna la falce al tempo della messe. Per paura della spada dell'oppressore ciascuno ritornerà al suo popolo, ciascuno fuggirà al proprio paese.

Exterminate the sower from Babylon, and the one who handles the sickle in the time of harvest. For fear of the sword of the oppressor everyone shall return to his people, and everyone shall flee to his own land.

17 I sraele è una pecora smarrita, a cui i leoni hanno dato la caccia; per primo l'ha divorata il re di Assiria, poi quest'ultimo, Nebukadnetsar, re di Babilonia, le ha frantumato le ossa».

Israel is a hunted and scattered sheep; the lions have chased him. First the king of Assyria devoured him, and now at last Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon has broken and gnawed his bones.

18 P erciò cosí dice l'Eterno degli eserciti, il DIO d'Israele: «Ecco, io punirò il re di Babilonia e il suo paese, come ho punito il re di Assiria.

Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will visit and punish the king of Babylon and his land, just as I visited and punished the king of Assyria.

19 M a ricondurrò Israele al suo pascolo, pascolerà sul Karmel e in Bashan e la sua anima si sazierà sui colli di Efraim e in Galaad.

And I will bring Israel again to his fold and pasturage, and he will feed on Carmel and Bashan, and his soul will be satisfied upon the hills of Ephraim and Gilead.

20 I n quei giorni, in quel tempo», dice l'Eterno, «si cercherà l'iniquità d'Israele, ma non ce ne sarà alcuna, e i peccati di Giuda, ma non si troveranno; perché io perdonerò a quelli che lascerò come residuo.

In those days and at that time, says the Lord, the iniquity of Israel will be sought, but there will be none, and the sins of Judah, but none will be found, for I will pardon those whom I cause to remain as a remnant (the preserved ones who come forth after a long tribulation).

21 S ali contro il paese di Merathaim, e contro gli abitanti di Pekod. Devasta e votali allo sterminio», dice l'Eterno, «e fa' esattamente come io ti ho comandato!

Go up against the land of Merathaim, even against it and against the inhabitants of Pekod. Slay and utterly destroy them, says the Lord, and do according to all that I have commanded you.

22 N el paese c'è rumore di guerra e la distruzione è grande.

The cry and noise of battle is in the land, and of great destruction.

23 P erché è stato fatto a pezzi e distrutto il martello di tutta la terra? Perché Babilonia è divenuta una desolazione fra le nazioni?

How the hammer of the whole earth is crushed and broken! How Babylon has become a horror of desolation among the nations!

24 T i ho teso un laccio e tu sei stata presa, o Babilonia, senza avvedertene. Sei stata trovata e catturata, perché hai fatto guerra contro l'Eterno.

I set a trap for you, and you also were taken, O Babylon, and you did not know it; you were found and also caught because you have struggled and contended against the Lord.

25 L 'Eterno ha aperto il suo arsenale e ha tratto fuori le armi della sua indignazione, poiché questa è un'opera che il Signore, l'Eterno degli eserciti, deve compiere nel paese dei Caldei.

The Lord has opened His armory and has brought forth the weapons of His indignation and wrath, for the Lord God of hosts has work to do in the land of the Chaldeans.

26 V enite contro di lei dalle estremità piú lontane, aprite i suoi granai, fatene un mucchio di rovine e votatela allo sterminio, che nulla ne resti.

Come against her from every quarter and from the utmost border. Open her granaries and storehouses; pile up like heaps of rubbish. Burn and destroy her utterly; let nothing be left of her.

27 U ccidete tutti i suoi tori, scendano al macello. Guai a loro, perché il loro giorno è giunto, il giorno della loro punizione.

Slay all her bullocks (her choice youths, the strength of her army); let them go down to the slaughter! Woe to! For their day has come, the time of their visitation (their inspection and punishment).

28 S i ode la voce di quelli che fuggono e scappano dal paese di Babilonia per annunciare in Sion la vendetta dell'Eterno, il nostro DIO, la vendetta del suo tempio.

Listen! The voice of those who flee and escape out of the land of Babylon proclaiming in Zion the vengeance of the Lord our God, the vengeance for His temple.

29 C onvocate contro Babilonia gli arcieri, tutti quelli che tendono l'arco. Accampatevi tutt'intorno contro di lei, nessuno scampi. Ripagatela secondo le sue opere, fate a lei esattamente come lei ha fatto ad altri, perché è stata arrogante contro l'Eterno, contro il Santo d'Israele.

Call together archers against Babylon, all those who bend the bow. Encamp against her round about; let none from there escape. Recompense her according to her deeds; just as she has done, do to her. For against the Lord, against the Holy One of Israel, has she been proudly defiant and presumptuous.

30 P erciò i suoi giovani cadranno nelle sue piazze e tutti i suoi uomini di guerra periranno in quel giorno», dice l'Eterno.

Therefore shall her young men fall in her streets and squares, and all her soldiers shall be destroyed on that day, says the Lord.

31 « Eccomi contro di te, o arrogante» dice il Signore, l'Eterno degli eserciti «perché il tuo giorno è giunto, il tempo in cui ti punirò.

Behold, I am against you, O Babylon, says the Lord, the Lord of hosts, for your day has come, the time when I will visit and punish you.

32 L 'arrogante vacillerà e cadrà, e nessuno lo rialzerà. Io appiccherò il fuoco alle sue città, e divorerà tutto ciò che lo circonda».

And Pride (the arrogant one) shall stumble (totter) and fall, and none shall raise him up. And I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it shall devour all who are round about him.

33 C osí dice l'Eterno degli eserciti: «I figli d'Israele erano oppressi insieme ai figli di Giuda. Tutti quelli che li hanno portati in cattività li hanno tenuti saldamente e hanno rifiutato di lasciarli andare.

Thus says the Lord of hosts: The children of Israel and the children of Judah are oppressed together; all who took them captive have held them fast; they refuse to let them go.

34 I l loro Redentore è forte; il suo nome è l'Eterno degli eserciti. Egli difenderà certamente la loro causa per dar riposo alla terra e per far tremare gli abitanti di Babilonia.

Their Redeemer is strong; the Lord of hosts is His name. He will surely and thoroughly plead their case and defend their cause, that He may give rest to the earth, but unrest to the inhabitants of Babylon.

35 U na spada pende sui Caldei», dice l'Eterno, «sugli abitanti di Babilonia, sui suoi principi, sui suoi savi.

A sword upon the Chaldeans, says the Lord—upon the inhabitants of Babylon and upon her princes (rulers in civic matters) and upon her wise men (the astrologers and rulers in religious affairs)!

36 U na spada pende sui bugiardi vanagloriosi, che risulteranno insensati; una spada pende sui suoi prodi, che saranno atterriti.

A sword upon the babbling liars (the diviners), that they may become fools! A sword upon her mighty warriors, that they may be dismayed and destroyed!

37 U na spada pende sui suoi cavalli, sui suoi carri e su tutto il miscuglio di gente che è in mezzo a lei, la quale diventerà come tante donne, una spada pende sui suoi tesori, che saranno saccheggiati.

A sword upon their horses and upon their chariots and upon all the mixed foreign troops that are in the midst of her, that they may become women! A sword upon her treasures, that they may be plundered!

38 U na siccità pende sulle sue acque, che saranno prosciugate, perché e un paese di immagini scolpite e vanno pazzi per i loro idoli.

A sword and a drought upon her waters, that they may be dried up! For it is a land of images, and they are mad over idols (objects of terror in which they foolishly trust).

39 P erciò vi abiteranno le bestie del deserto con gli sciacalli e vi si stabiliranno gli struzzi. Non sarà mai piú abitata né popolata di generazione in generazione.

Therefore wild beasts of the desert shall dwell with the jackals, and ostriches shall dwell there. And it shall never again be inhabited with people, even from generation to generation.

40 C ome DIO distrusse Sodoma Gomorra e le città loro vicine», dice l'Eterno, «cosí non vi abiterà piú alcuno né vi dimorerà piú figlio d'uomo.

As when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring cities, says the Lord, so no man shall dwell there; neither shall any son of man live there temporarily.

41 E cco, un popolo viene dal nord una grande nazione e molti re sono suscitati dalle estremità della terra.

Behold, a people is coming from the north; and a great nation and many kings are stirring from the uttermost parts of the earth.

42 E ssi impugnano arco e lancia, sono crudeli e non hanno alcuna pietà; la loro voce ruggirà come il mare. Montano cavalli, sono pronti a combattere come un sol uomo contro di te, o figlia di Babilonia.

They lay hold of bow, lance, and spear; they are cruel and have no mercy or compassion. They sound like the roaring of the sea; they ride upon horses, every man equipped like a man for the battle against you, O Daughter of Babylon!

43 I l re di Babilonia ha udito parlare di loro e le sue mani si indeboliscono; l'ha colto l'angoscia, doglie come di donna che sta per partorire.

The king of Babylon has heard the news about them, and his hands fall feeble and helpless; anguish has seized him, and pangs like that of a woman in childbirth.

44 E cco, sale come un leone dal rigonfiamento del Giordano contro la forte dimora, Ma io li farò improvvisamente fuggire da lei e stabilirò su di essa colui che ho scelto. Chi infatti è come me e chi può citarmi in giudizio? Chi è dunque quel pastore che può tenermi fronte?

See, there comes up one like a lion from the jungles (the pride) of the Jordan against the strong habitation and into the permanent pasturage and sheepfold; for in a twinkling I will drive him from there. And I will appoint over him the one whom I choose. For who is like Me? And who will challenge Me and prosecute Me for this proceeding? And what shepherd can stand before Me and defy Me?

45 P erciò ascoltate il disegno che l'Eterno ha concepito contro Babilonia e le decisioni che ha preso contro il paese dei Caldei. Certo saranno trascinati via anche i piú piccoli del gregge, certo la loro dimora sarà devastata.

Therefore hear the plan of the Lord which He has made against Babylon, and His purposes which He has formed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely they shall be dragged away, even the little ones of the flock; surely He shall make their habitation desolate because of them and their fold amazed and appalled at their fate.

46 A l rumore della presa di Babilonia la terra tremerà e il loro grido sarà udito fra le nazioni».

At the cry, Babylon has been taken! the earth shall tremble, and the cry shall be heard among the nations.
