1 D opo queste cose, Gesú andava in giro per la Galilea, perché non voleva andare per la Giudea, perché i Giudei cercavano di ucciderlo.

After this, Jesus went from place to place in Galilee, for He would not travel in Judea because the Jews were seeking to kill Him.

2 O ra la festa dei Giudei, quella dei Tabernacoli, era vicina.

Now the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles was drawing near.

3 P er cui i suoi fratelli gli dissero: «Parti di qui e va' in Giudea, affinché anche i tuoi discepoli vedano le opere che tu fai.

So His brothers said to Him, Leave here and go into Judea, so that Your disciples may also see the works that You do.

4 N essuno infatti fa alcuna cosa in segreto, quando cerca di essere riconosciuto pubblicamente, se tu fai tali cose, palesati al mondo».

For no one does anything in secret when he wishes to be conspicuous and secure publicity. If You do these things, show Yourself openly and make Yourself known to the world!

5 N eppure i suoi fratelli infatti credevano in lui.

For His brothers did not believe in or adhere to or trust in or rely on Him either.

6 A llora Gesú disse loro: «Il mio tempo non è ancora venuto; il vostro tempo invece è sempre pronto.

Whereupon Jesus said to them, My time (opportunity) has not come yet; but any time is suitable for you and your opportunity is ready any time.

7 I l mondo non può odiare voi, ma odia me perché io testimonio di lui, che le sue opere sono malvagie.

The world cannot hate you, but it does hate Me because I denounce it for its wicked works and reveal that its doings are evil.

8 S alite voi a questa festa, io non vi salgo ancora, perché il mio tempo non è ancora compiuto».

Go to the Feast yourselves. I am not going up to the Festival, because My time is not ripe.

9 E , dette loro tali cose, rimase in Galilea.

Having said these things to them, He stayed behind in Galilee.

10 D opo che i suoi fratelli furono saliti alla festa, allora anche lui vi salí, non pubblicamente, ma come di nascosto.

But afterward, when His brothers had gone up to the Feast, He went up also, not publicly, but by Himself quietly and as if He did not wish to be observed.

11 I Giudei dunque lo cercavano durante la festa e dicevano: «Dov'è quel tale?».

Therefore the Jews kept looking for Him at the Feast and asking, Where can He be?

12 F ra le folle si faceva un gran parlottare intorno a lui; gli uni dicevano: «Egli è un uomo dabbene!». Altri dicevano: «No, anzi egli inganna la folla».

And there was among the mass of the people much whispered discussion and hot disputing about Him. Some were saying, He is good! Others said, No, He misleads and deceives the people!

13 N essuno però parlava di lui apertamente, per timore dei Giudei.

But no one dared speak out boldly about Him for fear of the Jews.

14 M a, verso la metà della festa, Gesú salí al tempio e incominciò a insegnare.

When the Feast was already half over, Jesus went up into the temple '> court] and began to teach.

15 E i Giudei si meravigliavano e dicevano: «Come mai costui sa di lettere, senza aver fatto studi?».

The Jews were astonished. They said, How is it that this Man has learning when He has never studied?

16 G esú allora rispose loro e disse: «La mia dottrina non è mia, ma di colui che mi ha mandato.

Jesus answered them by saying, My teaching is not My own, but His Who sent Me.

17 S e qualcuno vuol fare la sua volontà, conoscerà se questa dottrina viene da Dio, oppure se io parlo da me stesso.

If any man desires to do His will (God’s pleasure), he will know (have the needed illumination to recognize, and can tell for himself) whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking from Myself and of My own accord and on My own authority.

18 C hi parla da se stesso cerca la sua propria gloria, ma chi cerca la gloria di colui che l'ha mandato è verace, e in lui non vi è ingiustizia.

He who speaks on his own authority seeks to win honor for himself. But He Who seeks the glory and is eager for the honor of Him Who sent Him, He is true; and there is no unrighteousness or falsehood or deception in Him.

19 N on vi ha Mosé dato la legge? Eppure nessuno di voi mette in pratica la legge. Perché cercate di uccidermi?».

Did not Moses give you the Law? And yet not one of you keeps the Law. why do you seek to kill Me ?

20 L a folla rispose e disse: «Tu hai un demone; chi cerca di ucciderti?».

The crowd answered Him, You are possessed by a demon! Who seeks to kill You?

21 G esú replicò e disse loro: «Io ho fatto un'opera e ne siete tutti meravigliati.

Jesus answered them, I did one work, and you all are astounded.

22 O ra Mosé vi ha dato la circoncisione, (non già che essa provenga da Mosé, ma dai padri); e voi circoncidete un uomo di sabato.

Now Moses established circumcision among you—though it did not originate with Moses but with the previous patriarchs—and you circumcise a person on the Sabbath day.

23 S e un uomo riceve la circoncisione di sabato, affinché la legge di Mosé non sia violata, vi adirate voi contro di me perché ho guarito interamente un uomo di sabato?

If, to avoid breaking the Law of Moses, a person undergoes circumcision on the Sabbath day, have you any cause to be angry with (indignant with, bitter against) Me for making a man’s whole body well on the Sabbath?

24 N on giudicate secondo l'apparenza ma giudicate secondo giustizia».

Be honest in your judgment and do not decide at a glance (superficially and by appearances); but judge fairly and righteously.

25 A llora alcuni di Gerusalemme dicevano: «Non è questi colui che cercano di uccidere?

Then some of the Jerusalem people said, Is not this the Man they seek to kill?

26 E ppure, ecco, egli parla liberamente e non gli dicono nulla; hanno i capi riconosciuto davvero che egli è il Cristo?

And here He is speaking openly, and they say nothing to Him! Can it be possible that the rulers have discovered and know that this is truly the Christ?

27 M a noi sappiamo di dove sia costui; invece quando il Cristo verrà, nessuno saprà di dove egli sia».

No, we know where this Man comes from; when the Christ arrives, no one is to know from what place He comes.

28 A llora Gesú, insegnando nel tempio, esclamò e disse: «Voi mi conoscete e sapete da dove sono; tuttavia io non sono venuto da me stesso, ma colui che mi ha mandato è verace e voi non lo conoscete.

Whereupon Jesus called out as He taught in the temple '> porches], Do you know Me, and do you know where I am from? I have not come on My own authority and of My own accord and as self-appointed, but the One Who sent Me is true (real, genuine, steadfast); and Him you do not know!

29 I o però lo conosco, perché vengo da lui ed è stato lui a mandarmi».

I know Him because I come from His presence, and it was He Who sent Me.

30 P erciò cercavano di prenderlo, ma nessuno gli mise le mani addosso, perché la sua ora non era ancora venuta.

Therefore they were eager to arrest Him, but no one laid a hand on Him, for His hour (time) had not yet come.

31 M a molti della folla credettero in lui e dicevano: «Il Cristo, quando verrà, farà piú segni di quanti ne abbia fatti costui?».

And besides, many of the multitude believed in Him. And they kept saying, When the Christ comes, will He do more miracles and produce more proofs and signs than what this Man has done?

32 I farisei udirono che la folla sussurrava queste cose a suo riguardo; perciò i farisei e i capi dei sacerdoti mandarono delle guardie per prenderlo.

The Pharisees learned how the people were saying these things about Him under their breath; and the chief priests and Pharisees sent attendants (guards) to arrest Him.

33 A llora Gesú disse loro: «Io sono con voi ancora per poco tempo; poi me ne andrò da colui che mi ha mandato.

Therefore Jesus said, For a little while I am with you, and then I go back to Him Who sent Me.

34 V oi mi cercherete e non mi troverete; e dove sarò io, voi non potete venire».

You will look for Me, but you will not find Me; where I am, you cannot come.

35 D icevano perciò i Giudei tra loro: «Dove sta egli per andare che noi non lo troveremo? Andrà forse da quelli che sono dispersi fra i Greci, e ad insegnare ai Greci?

Then the Jews said among themselves, Where does this Man intend to go that we shall not find Him? Will He go to the Jews who are scattered in the Dispersion among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?

36 C osa voleva dire quando disse: "Voi mi cercherete e non mi troverete"; e: "Dove sarò io, voi non potete venire"?».

What does this statement of His mean, You will look for Me and not be able to find Me, and, Where I am, you cannot come?

37 O r nell'ultimo giorno, il grande giorno della festa, Gesú si alzò in piedi ed esclamò dicendo: «Se qualcuno ha sete, venga a me e beva.

Now on the final and most important day of the Feast, Jesus stood, and He cried in a loud voice, If any man is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink!

38 C hi crede in me, come ha detto la Scrittura, da dentro di lui sgorgheranno fiumi d'acqua viva».

He who believes in Me as the Scripture has said, From his innermost being shall flow springs and rivers of living water.

39 O r egli disse questo dello Spirito, che avrebbero ricevuto coloro che avrebbero creduto in lui; lo Spirito Santo infatti non era ancora stato dato, perché Gesú non era stato ancora glorificato.

But He was speaking here of the Spirit, Whom those who believed (trusted, had faith) in Him were afterward to receive. For the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified (raised to honor).

40 M olti dunque della folla, udite queste parole, dicevano: «Costui è veramente il profeta».

Listening to those words, some of the multitude said, This is certainly and beyond doubt the Prophet!

41 A ltri dicevano: «Costui è il Cristo». Alcuni invece dicevano: «Viene forse il Cristo dalla Galilea?

Others said, This is the Christ (the Messiah, Anointed One)! But some said, What? Does the Christ come out of Galilee?

42 N on dice la Scrittura che il Cristo viene dalla progenie di Davide e da Betlemme, villaggio dove viveva Davide?».

Does not the Scripture tell us that the Christ will come from the offspring of David and from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?

43 C i fu dunque dissenso fra la folla a motivo di lui.

So there arose a division and dissension among the people concerning Him.

44 E alcuni di loro lo volevano prendere, ma nessuno gli mise le mani addosso.

Some of them wanted to arrest Him, but no one laid hands on Him.

45 L e guardie tornarono quindi dai capi dei sacerdoti e dai farisei, e questi dissero loro: «Perché non l'avete portato?».

Meanwhile the attendants (guards) had gone back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, Why have you not brought Him here with you?

46 L e guardie risposero: «Nessun uomo ha mai parlato come costui».

The attendants replied, Never has a man talked as this Man talks!

47 P erciò i farisei risposero loro: «Siete stati sedotti anche voi?

The Pharisees said to them, Are you also deluded and led astray?

48 H a qualcuno dei capi o dei farisei creduto in lui?

Has any of the authorities or of the Pharisees believed in Him?

49 M a questa plebaglia, che non conosce la legge, è maledetta».

As for this multitude (rabble) that does not know the Law, they are contemptible and doomed and accursed!

50 N icodemo, uno di loro, colui che era andato da Gesú di notte, disse loro:

Then Nicodemus, who came to Jesus before at night and was one of them, asked,

51 « La nostra legge condanna forse un uomo prima di averlo ascoltato e di sapere ciò che egli ha fatto?».

Does our Law convict a man without giving him a hearing and finding out what he has done?

52 E ssi risposero e gli dissero: «Sei forse anche tu Galileo? Ricerca le Scritture e vedrai che dalla Galilea non sorse mai alcun profeta».

They answered him, Are you too from Galilee? Search, and you will see that no prophet comes (will rise to prominence) from Galilee.

53 E ciascuno se ne tornò a casa sua.

And they went, each to his own house.
