1 E ra allora malato un certo Lazzaro di Betania, il villaggio di Maria e di Marta, sua sorella.

Now a certain man named Lazarus was ill. He was of Bethany, the village where Mary and her sister Martha lived.

2 O r Maria era quella che unse di olio profumato il Signore e gli asciugò i piedi con i suoi capelli; e suo fratello Lazzaro era malato.

This Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped His feet with her hair. It was her brother Lazarus who was sick.

3 L e sorelle dunque mandarono a dire a Gesú: «Signore, ecco, colui che tu ami è malato».

So the sisters sent to Him, saying, Lord, he whom You love is sick.

4 E Gesú, udito ciò, disse: «Questa malattia non è a morte, ma per la gloria di Dio, affinché per mezzo di essa il Figlio di Dio sia glorificato».

When Jesus received the message, He said, This sickness is not to end in death; but it is to honor God and to promote His glory, that the Son of God may be glorified through (by) it.

5 O r Gesú amava Marta, sua sorella e Lazzaro.

Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

6 C ome dunque ebbe inteso che Lazzaro era malato, si trattenne ancora due giorni nel luogo dove egli era.

Therefore when He heard that Lazarus was sick, He still stayed two days longer in the same place where He was.

7 P oi disse ai suoi discepoli: «Torniamo di nuovo in Giudea».

Then after that interval He said to His disciples, Let us go back again to Judea.

8 I discepoli gli dissero: «Maestro, i Giudei poco fa cercavano di lapidarti e tu vai di nuovo là?».

The disciples said to Him, Rabbi, the Jews only recently were intending and trying to stone You, and are You going back there again?

9 G esú rispose: «Non vi sono forse dodici ore del giorno? Se uno cammina di giorno, non inciampa, perché vede la luce di questo mondo

Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? Anyone who walks about in the daytime does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.

10 m a se uno cammina di notte, inciampa, perché la luce non è in lui».

But if anyone walks about in the night, he does stumble, because there is no light in him.

11 D opo aver detto queste cose, soggiunse: «Il nostro amico Lazzaro si è addormentato, ma io vado a svegliarlo».

He said these things, and then added, Our friend Lazarus is at rest and sleeping; but I am going there that I may awaken him out of his sleep.

12 A llora i suoi discepoli dissero: «Signore, se dorme si riprenderà».

The disciples answered, Lord, if he is sleeping, he will recover.

13 O r Gesú aveva parlato della sua morte, essi invece pensavano che avesse parlato del riposo del sonno.

However, Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He referred to falling into a refreshing and natural sleep.

14 A llora Gesú disse loro apertamente: «Lazzaro è morto.

So then Jesus told them plainly, Lazarus is dead,

15 E d io mi rallegro per voi di non essere stato là, affinché crediate; ma andiamo da lui».

And for your sake I am glad that I was not there; it will help you to believe (to trust and rely on Me). However, let us go to him.

16 A llora Tommaso, detto Didimo, disse ai condiscepoli: «Andiamo anche noi a morire con lui».

Then Thomas, who was called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, Let us go too, that we may die along with Him.

17 A rrivato dunque Gesú, trovò che Lazzaro era già da quattro giorni nel sepolcro.

So when Jesus arrived, He found that he had already been in the tomb four days.

18 O r Betania distava da Gerusalemme circa quindici stadi.

Bethany was near Jerusalem, only about two miles away,

19 E molti Giudei erano venuti da Marta e Maria per consolarle del loro fratello.

And a considerable number of the Jews had gone out to see Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother.

20 M arta dunque, come udí che Gesú veniva, gli andò incontro; Maria invece stava seduta in casa.

When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet Him, while Mary remained sitting in the house.

21 M arta disse a Gesú: «Signore, se tu fossi stato qui, mio fratello non sarebbe morto,

Martha then said to Jesus, Master, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.

22 m a anche adesso so che tutto quello che chiederai a Dio, Dio te lo darà».

And even now I know that whatever You ask from God, He will grant it to You.

23 G esú le disse: «Tuo fratello risusciterà».

Jesus said to her, Your brother shall rise again.

24 M arta gli disse: «Lo so che risusciterà nella risurrezione all'ultimo giorno».

Martha replied, I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

25 G esú le disse: «Io sono la risurrezione e la vita; chiunque crede in me, anche se dovesse morire, vivrà.

Jesus said to her, I am the Resurrection and the Life. Whoever believes in (adheres to, trusts in, and relies on) Me, although he may die, yet he shall live;

26 E chiunque vive e crede in me, non morrà mai in eterno. Credi tu questo?».

And whoever continues to live and believes in (has faith in, cleaves to, and relies on) Me shall never die at all. Do you believe this?

27 E lla gli disse: «Sí, Signore, io credo che tu sei il Cristo, il Figlio di Dio che doveva venire nel mondo».

She said to Him, Yes, Lord, I have believed that You are the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One), the Son of God, Who was to come into the world.

28 E , detto questo, andò a chiamare di nascosto Maria, sua sorella, dicendo: «Il Maestro è qui e ti chiama».

After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary, privately whispering to her, The Teacher is close at hand and is asking for you.

29 A ppena udito ciò, ella si alzò in fretta e venne da lui.

When she heard this, she sprang up quickly and went to Him.

30 O r Gesú non era ancora giunto nel villaggio, ma si trovava nel luogo dove Marta lo aveva incontrato.

Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the same spot where Martha had met Him.

31 P erciò i Giudei che erano in casa con lei per consolarla, vedendo Maria alzarsi in fretta e uscire, la seguirono, dicendo: «Ella se ne va al sepolcro per piangere la».

When the Jews who were sitting with her in the house and consoling her saw how hastily Mary had arisen and gone out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to pour out her grief there.

32 A ppena Maria giunse al luogo in cui si trovava Gesú, e lo vide, si gettò ai suoi piedi, dicendogli: «Signore, se tu fossi stato qui, mio fratello non sarebbe morto».

When Mary came to the place where Jesus was and saw Him, she dropped down at His feet, saying to Him, Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.

33 G esú allora, come vide che lei e i Giudei che erano venuti con lei piangevano, fremé nello spirito e si turbò,

When Jesus saw her sobbing, and the Jews who came with her sobbing, He was deeply moved in spirit and troubled.

34 e disse: «Dove l'avete posto?». Essi gli dissero: «Signore, vieni e vedi».

And He said, Where have you laid him? They said to Him, Lord, come and see.

35 G esú pianse.

Jesus wept.

36 D issero allora i Giudei: «Vedi come l'amava!».

The Jews said, See how He loved him!

37 M a alcuni di loro dissero: «Non poteva costui che aprí gli occhi al cieco, far sí che questi non morisse?».

But some of them said, Could not He Who opened a blind man’s eyes have prevented this man from dying?

38 P erciò Gesú, fremendo di nuovo in se stesso, venne al sepolcro; or questo era una grotta davanti alla quale era stata posta una pietra.

Now Jesus, again sighing repeatedly and deeply disquieted, approached the tomb. It was a cave (a hole in the rock), and a boulder lay against it.

39 G esú disse: «Togliete via la pietra!». Marta, la sorella del morto, gli disse: «Signore, egli puzza già, poiché è morto da quattro giorni».

Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the dead man, exclaimed, But Lord, by this time he throws off an offensive odor, for he has been dead four days!

40 G esú le disse: «Non ti ho detto che se credi, vedrai la gloria di Dio?».

Jesus said to her, Did I not tell you and promise you that if you would believe and rely on Me, you would see the glory of God?

41 E ssi dunque tolsero la pietra dal luogo dove giaceva il morto. Gesú allora alzati in alto gli occhi, disse: «Padre, ti ringrazio che mi hai esaudito.

So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.

42 l o sapevo bene che tu mi esaudisci sempre, ma ho detto ciò per la folla che sta attorno, affinché credano che tu mi hai mandato».

Yes, I know You always hear and listen to Me, but I have said this on account of and for the benefit of the people standing around, so that they may believe that You did send Me.

43 E , detto questo, gridò a gran voce: «Lazzaro, vieni fuori!».

When He had said this, He shouted with a loud voice, Lazarus, come out!

44 A llora il morto uscí, con le mani e i piedi legati con fasce e con la faccia avvolta in un asciugatoio. Gesú disse loro: «Scioglietelo e lasciatelo andare».

And out walked the man who had been dead, his hands and feet wrapped in burial cloths (linen strips), and with a napkin bound around his face. Jesus said to them, Free him of the burial wrappings and let him go.

45 A llora molti dei Giudei, che erano venuti da Maria e avevano visto tutto quello che Gesú aveva fatto, credettero in lui.

Upon seeing what Jesus had done, many of the Jews who had come with Mary believed in Him.

46 M a alcuni di loro andarono dai farisei e riferirono loro quanto Gesú aveva fatto.

But some of them went back to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.

47 A llora i capi dei sacerdoti e i farisei riunirono a il sinedrio e dicevano: «Che facciamo? Quest'uomo fa molti segni.

So the chief priests and Pharisees called a meeting of the council (the Sanhedrin) and said, What are we to do? For this Man performs many signs (evidences, miracles).

48 S e lo lasciamo andare avanti cosí, tutti crederanno in lui, verranno i Romani e distruggeranno il nostro luogo e la nostra nazione».

If we let Him alone to go on like this, everyone will believe in Him and adhere to Him, and the Romans will come and suppress and destroy and take away our place and our nation '> our temple and city and our civil organization].

49 M a uno di loro, Caiafa, che era sommo sacerdote in quell'anno, disse loro: «Voi non capite nulla;

But one of them, Caiaphas, who was the high priest that year, declared, You know nothing at all!

50 e non considerate che conviene per noi che un sol uomo muoia per il popolo e non perisca tutta la nazione».

Nor do you understand or reason out that it is expedient and better for your own welfare that one man should die on behalf of the people than that the whole nation should perish (be destroyed, ruined).

51 O r egli non disse questo da se stesso; ma, essendo sommo sacerdote in quell'anno, profetizzò che Gesú doveva morire per la nazione,

Now he did not say this simply of his own accord; but being the high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was to die for the nation,

52 e non solo per la nazione, ma anche per raccogliere in uno i figli di Dio dispersi.

And not only for the nation but also for the purpose of uniting into one body the children of God who have been scattered far and wide.

53 D a quel giorno dunque deliberarono di farlo morire.

So from that day on they took counsel and plotted together how they might put Him to death.

54 P erciò Gesú non si aggirava piú pubblicamente tra i Giudei, ma si ritirò nella regione vicina al deserto, in una città detta Efraim, e lí rimase con i suoi discepoli.

For that reason Jesus no longer appeared publicly among the Jews, but left there and retired to the district that borders on the wilderness (the desert), to a village called Ephraim, and there He stayed with the disciples.

55 O r la Pasqua dei Giudei era vicina e molti di quella regione salirono a Gerusalemme prima della Pasqua per purificarsi.

Now the Jewish Passover was at hand, and many from the country went up to Jerusalem in order that they might purify and consecrate themselves before the Passover.

56 C ercavano dunque Gesú e, stando nel tempio, dicevano fra di loro: «Che ve ne pare? Non verrà egli alla festa?».

So they kept looking for Jesus and questioned among themselves as they were standing about in the temple '> area], What do you think? Will He not come to the Feast at all?

57 O r i capi dei sacerdoti e i farisei avevano dato ordine che, se qualcuno sapeva dove egli era, lo segnalasse affinché potessero prenderlo.

Now the chief priests and Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where He was, he should report it to them, so that they might arrest Him.
