1 Q uando dunque il Signore seppe che i farisei avevano udito che Gesú stava facendo piú discepoli e battezzando più di Giovanni

Now when the Lord knew (learned, became aware) that the Pharisees had been told that Jesus was winning and baptizing more disciples than John—

2 ( sebbene non fosse Gesú stesso che battezzava ma i suoi discepoli),

Though Jesus Himself did not baptize, but His disciples—

3 l asciò la Giudea e se ne andò di nuovo in Galilea.

He left Judea and returned to Galilee.

4 O r egli doveva passare per la Samara.

It was necessary for Him to go through Samaria.

5 A rrivò dunque in una città della Samaria, detta Sichar, vicino al podere che Giacobbe aveva dato a Giuseppe, suo figlio.

And in doing so, He arrived at a Samaritan town called Sychar, near the tract of land that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

6 O r qui c'era il pozzo di Giacobbe. E Gesú, affaticato dal cammino, sedeva cosí presso il pozzo; era circa l'ora sesta.

And Jacob’s well was there. So Jesus, tired as He was from His journey, sat down by the well. It was then about the sixth hour (about noon).

7 U na donna di Samaria venne per attingere l'acqua. E Gesú le disse: «Dammi da bere»,

Presently, when a woman of Samaria came along to draw water, Jesus said to her, Give Me a drink—

8 p erché i suoi discepoli erano andati in città a comperare del cibo.

For His disciples had gone off into the town to buy food—

9 M a la donna samaritana gli disse: «Come mai tu che sei Giudeo chiedi da bere a me, che sono una donna samaritana?» (Infatti i Giudei non hanno rapporti con i Samaritani).

The Samaritan woman said to Him, How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?—For the Jews have nothing to do with the Samaritans—

10 G esú rispose e le disse: «Se tu conoscessi il dono di Dio e chi è colui che ti dice: "Dammi da bere tu stessa gliene avresti chiesto, ed egli ti avrebbe dato dell'acqua viva»

Jesus answered her, If you had only known and had recognized God’s gift and Who this is that is saying to you, Give Me a drink, you would have asked Him and He would have given you living water.

11 L a donna gli disse: «Signore, tu non hai neppure un secchio per attingere e il pozzo è profondo; da dove hai dunque quest'acqua viva?

She said to Him, Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; how then can You provide living water?

12 S ei tu forse piú grande di Giacobbe nostro padre, che ci diede questo pozzo e ne bevve egli stesso, i suoi figli e il suo bestiame?».

Are You greater than and superior to our ancestor Jacob, who gave us this well and who used to drink from it himself, and his sons and his cattle also?

13 G esú rispose e le disse: «Chiunque beve di quest'acqua, avrà ancora sete,

Jesus answered her, All who drink of this water will be thirsty again.

14 m a chi beve dell'acqua che io gli darò non avrà mai piú sete in eterno; ma l'acqua che io gli darò diventerà in lui una fonte d'acqua che zampilla in vita eterna».

But whoever takes a drink of the water that I will give him shall never, no never, be thirsty any more. But the water that I will give him shall become a spring of water welling up (flowing, bubbling) within him unto (into, for) eternal life.

15 L a donna gli disse: «Signore, dammi quest'acqua, affinché io non abbia piú sete e non venga piú qui ad attingere».

The woman said to Him, Sir, give me this water, so that I may never get thirsty nor have to come here to draw.

16 G esú le disse: «Va' a chiamare tuo marito e torna qui».

At this, Jesus said to her, Go, call your husband and come back here.

17 L a donna rispose e gli disse: «Io non ho marito». Gesú le disse: «Hai detto bene: "Non ho marito",

The woman answered, I have no husband. Jesus said to her, You have spoken truly in saying, I have no husband.

18 p erché tu hai avuto cinque mariti e quello che hai ora non è tuo marito; in questo hai detto la verità».

For you have had five husbands, and the man you are now living with is not your husband. In this you have spoken truly.

19 L a donna gli disse: «Signore, vedo che tu sei un profeta.

The woman said to Him, Sir, I see and understand that You are a prophet.

20 I nostri padri hanno adorato su questo monte, e voi dite che è a Gerusalemme il luogo dove si deve adorare».

Our forefathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that Jerusalem is the place where it is necessary and proper to worship.

21 G esú le disse: «Donna, credimi: l'ora viene che né su questo monte, né a Gerusalemme adorerete il Padre.

Jesus said to her, Woman, believe Me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem.

22 V oi adorate quel che non conoscete; noi adoriamo quel che conosciamo; perché la salvezza viene dai Giudei.

You do not know what you are worshiping. We do know what we are worshiping, for salvation comes from the Jews.

23 M a l'ora viene, anzi è già venuta, che i veri adoratori adoreranno il Padre in spirito e verità, perché tali sono gli adoratori che il Padre richiede.

A time will come, however, indeed it is already here, when the true (genuine) worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth (reality); for the Father is seeking just such people as these as His worshipers.

24 D io è Spirito, e quelli che lo adorano devono adorarlo in spirito e verità».

God is a Spirit (a spiritual Being) and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth (reality).

25 L a donna gli disse: «lo so che il Messia, che è chiamato Cristo, deve venire quando sarà venuto lui ci annunzierà ogni cosa».

The woman said to Him, I know that Messiah is coming, He Who is called the Christ (the Anointed One); and when He arrives, He will tell us everything we need to know and make it clear to us.

26 G esú le disse: «Io sono, colui che ti parla».

Jesus said to her, I Who now speak with you am He.

27 I n quel momento arrivarono i suoi discepoli e si meravigliarono che parlasse con una donna; nessuno però gli disse: «Che vuoi?» o: «Perché parli con lei?».

Just then His disciples came and they wondered (were surprised, astonished) to find Him talking with a woman. However, not one of them asked Him, What are You inquiring about? or What do You want? or, Why do You speak with her?

28 L a donna allora, lasciato il suo secchio, se ne andò in città e disse alla gente:

Then the woman left her water jar and went away to the town. And she began telling the people,

29 « Venite a vedere un uomo che mi ha detto tutto quello che io ho fatto; non sarà forse lui il Cristo?».

Come, see a Man Who has told me everything that I ever did! Can this be the Christ?

30 U scirono dunque dalla città e vennero da lui.

So the people left the town and set out to go to Him.

31 I ntanto i suoi discepoli lo pregavano dicendo: «Maestro, mangia».

Meanwhile, the disciples urged Him saying, Rabbi, eat something.

32 M a egli disse loro: «Io ho un cibo da mangiare che voi non conoscete».

But He assured them, I have food (nourishment) to eat of which you know nothing and have no idea.

33 I discepoli perciò si dicevano l'un l'altro: «Gli ha qualcuno forse portato da mangiare?».

So the disciples said one to another, Has someone brought Him something to eat?

34 G esú disse loro: «Il mio cibo è fare la volontà di colui che mi ha mandato e di compiere l'opera sua.

Jesus said to them, My food (nourishment) is to do the will (pleasure) of Him Who sent Me and to accomplish and completely finish His work.

35 N on dite voi che vi sono ancora quattro mesi e poi viene la mietitura? Ecco, io vi dico: Alzate i vostri occhi e mirate le campagne come già biancheggiano per la mietitura.

Do you not say, It is still four months until harvest time comes? Look! I tell you, raise your eyes and observe the fields and see how they are already white for harvesting.

36 O r il mietitore riceve il premio e raccoglie frutto per la vita eterna, affinché il seminatore e il mietitore si rallegrino insieme.

Already the reaper is getting his wages, for he is gathering fruit (crop) unto life eternal, so that he who does the planting and he who does the reaping may rejoice together.

37 P oiché in questo è vero il detto: "L'uno semina e l'altro miete".

For in this the saying holds true, One sows and another reaps.

38 I o vi ho mandato a mietere ciò per cui non avete faticato; altri hanno faticato e voi siete entrati nella loro fatica».

I sent you to reap a crop for which you have not toiled. Other men have labored and you have stepped in to reap the results of their work.

39 O ra, molti Samaritani di quella città credettero in lui, a motivo della parola che la donna aveva attestato: «Egli mi ha detto tutte le cose che io ho fatto».

Now numerous Samaritans from that town believed in and trusted in Him because of what the woman said when she declared and testified, He told me everything that I ever did.

40 Q uando poi i Samaritani vennero da lui, lo pregarono di restare con loro; ed egli vi rimase due giorni.

So when the Samaritans arrived, they asked Him to remain with them, and He did stay there two days.

41 E molti di piú credettero a motivo della sua parola.

Then many more believed in and adhered to and relied on Him because of His personal message.

42 E d essi dicevano alla donna: «Non è piú a motivo delle tue parole che noi crediamo, ma perché noi stessi abbiamo udito e sappiamo che costui è veramente il Cristo, il Salvatore del mondo».

And they told the woman, Now we no longer believe (trust, have faith) just because of what you said; for we have heard Him ourselves, and we know that He truly is the Savior of the world, the Christ.

43 O ra, passati quei due giorni, egli partí di là e andò in Galilea,

But after these two days Jesus went on from there into Galilee—

44 p erché Gesú stesso aveva testimoniato che un profeta non è onorato nella propria patria.

Although He Himself declared that a prophet has no honor in his own country.

45 Q uando dunque giunse in Galilea, i Galilei lo ricevettero, perché avevano visto tutte le cose che egli aveva fatto in Gerusalemme durante la festa, poiché anch'essi erano andati alla festa.

However, when He came into Galilee, the Galileans also welcomed Him and took Him to their hearts eagerly, for they had seen everything that He did in Jerusalem during the Feast; for they too had attended the Feast.

46 G esú dunque venne di nuovo a Cana di Galilea, dove aveva mutato l'acqua in vino. Ora vi era un funzionario regio, il cui figlio era ammalato a Capernaum.

So Jesus came again to Cana of Galilee, where He had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son was lying ill in Capernaum.

47 A vendo egli udito che Gesú era venuto dalla Giudea in Galilea, andò da lui e lo pregò che scendesse e guarisse suo figlio, perché stava per morire.

Having heard that Jesus had come back from Judea into Galilee, he went away to meet Him and began to beg Him to come down and cure his son, for he was lying at the point of death.

48 A llora Gesú gli disse: «Se non vedete segni e miracoli, voi non credete».

Then Jesus said to him, Unless you see signs and miracles happen, you never will believe (trust, have faith) at all.

49 I l funzionario regio gli disse: «Signore, scendi prima che il mio ragazzo muoia».

The king’s officer pleaded with Him, Sir, do come down at once before my little child is dead!

50 G esú gli disse: «Va tuo figlio vive!». E quell'uomo credette alla parola che gli aveva detto Gesú, e se ne andò.

Jesus answered him, Go in peace; your son will live! And the man put his trust in what Jesus said and started home.

51 P roprio mentre egli scendeva, gli vennero incontro i suoi servi e lo informarono, dicendo: «Tuo figlio vive».

But even as he was on the road going down, his servants met him and reported, saying, Your son lives!

52 E d egli domandò loro a che ora era stato meglio; essi gli dissero: «Ieri all'ora settima la febbre lo lasciò».

So he asked them at what time he had begun to get better. They said, Yesterday during the seventh hour (about one o’clock in the afternoon) the fever left him.

53 A llora il padre riconobbe che era proprio in quell'ora in cui Gesú gli aveva detto: «Tuo figlio vive»; e credette lui con tutta la sua casa.

Then the father knew that it was at that very hour when Jesus had said to him, Your son will live. And he and his entire household believed (adhered to, trusted in, and relied on Jesus).

54 G esú fece anche questo secondo segno quando tornò dalla Giudea in Galilea.

This is the second sign (wonderwork, miracle) that Jesus performed after He had come out of Judea into Galilee.
