1 A llora tutta l'assemblea si alzò e lo condusse da Pilato.

Then the whole assembly of them got up and conducted before Pilate.

2 E cominciarono ad accusarlo, dicendo: «Noi abbiamo sorpreso costui che sovvertiva la nazione e proibiva di dare i tributi a Cesare, affermando di essere un re, il Cristo».

And they began to accuse Him, asserting, We found this Man perverting (misleading, corrupting, and turning away) our nation and forbidding to pay tribute to Caesar, saying that He Himself is Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One), a King!

3 A llora Pilato lo interrogò, dicendo: «Sei tu il re dei Giudei?». E Gesú gli rispose e disse: «Tu lo dici».

So Pilate asked Him, Are You the King of the Jews? And He answered him, '> It is just as] you say.

4 P ilato quindi disse ai capi dei sacerdoti e alle turbe: «Io non trovo nessuna colpa in quest'uomo».

And Pilate said to the chief priests and the throngs, I find no guilt or crime in this Man.

5 M a quelli insistevano, dicendo: «Egli solleva il popolo insegnando per tutta la Giudea, dopo aver cominciato dalla Galilea fin qua».

But they were urgent and emphatic, saying, He stirs up and excites the people, teaching throughout all Judea—from Galilee, where He began, even to this place.

6 A llora Pilato, avendo udito nominare la Galilea, domandò se quell'uomo fosse Galileo.

Upon hearing this, Pilate asked whether the Man was a Galilean.

7 E , saputo che apparteneva alla giurisdizione di Erode, lo mandò da Erode, che in quei giorni si trovava anch'egli a Gerusalemme.

And when he found out that He belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him up to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem in those days.

8 Q uando Erode vide Gesú, se ne rallegrò grandemente; da molto tempo infatti desiderava vederlo, perché aveva sentito dire molte cose di lui e sperava di vederlo compiere qualche miracolo.

Now when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceedingly glad, for he had eagerly desired to see Him for a long time because of what he had heard concerning Him, and he was hoping to witness some sign (some striking evidence or spectacular performance) done by Him.

9 E gli gli rivolse molte domande, ma Gesú non gli rispose nulla.

So he asked Him many questions, but He made no reply.

10 I ntanto i capi dei sacerdoti e gli scribi stavano là accusandolo con veemenza.

Meanwhile, the chief priests and the scribes stood by, continuing vehemently and violently to accuse Him.

11 A llora Erode, con i suoi soldati, dopo averlo oltraggiato e schernito, lo rivestí di una veste splendida e lo rimandò da Pilato.

And Herod, with his soldiers, treated Him with contempt and scoffed at and ridiculed Him; then, dressing Him up in bright and gorgeous apparel, he sent Him back to Pilate.

12 I n quel giorno Erode e Pilato divennero amici, mentre prima erano stati nemici.

And that very day Herod and Pilate became friends with each other— they had been at enmity before this.

13 A llora Pilato, riuniti i capi dei sacerdoti i magistrati e il popolo,

Pilate then called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,

14 d isse loro: «Voi mi avete portato quest'uomo, come uno che perverte il popolo; ed ecco, dopo averlo esaminato alla vostra presenza, non ho trovato in lui nessuna delle colpe di cui lo accusate

And said to them, You brought this Man before me as One Who was perverting and misleading and turning away and corrupting the people; and behold, after examining Him before you, I have not found any offense (crime or guilt) in this Man in regard to your accusations against Him;

15 e neppure Erode, perche lo ha rimandato a noi; in realtà egli non ha fatto nulla che meriti la morte.

No, nor indeed did Herod, for he sent Him back to us; behold, He has done nothing deserving of death.

16 P erciò, dopo averlo fatto flagellare, lo rilascerò».

I will therefore chastise Him and deliver Him amended (reformed, taught His lesson) and release Him.

17 O ra in occasione della festa di Pasqua, il governatore doveva liberare qualcuno.

For it was necessary for him to release to them one prisoner at the Feast.

18 M a essi tutti insieme gridarono, dicendo: «A morte costui, e liberaci Barabba».

But they all together raised a deep cry, saying, Away with this Man! Release to us Barabbas!

19 Q uesti era stato incarcerato per una sedizione fatta in città e per omicidio.

He was a man who had been thrown into prison for raising a riot in the city, and for murder.

20 P erciò Pilato desiderando liberare Gesú parlò loro di nuovo.

Once more Pilate called to them, wishing to release Jesus;

21 M a essi gridavano, dicendo: «Crocifiggilo, crocifiggilo».

But they kept shouting out, Crucify, crucify Him!

22 P er la terza volta, egli disse loro: «Ma che male ha fatto costui? Io non ho trovato in lui alcuna colpa che meriti la morte. Perciò, dopo averlo fatto flagellare, lo rilascerò».

A third time he said to them, Why? What wrong has He done? I have found in Him nothing deserving of death; I will therefore chastise Him '> in order to teach Him better] and release Him.

23 M a quelli insistevano con grandi grida, chiedendo che fosse crocifisso, e le loro grida e quelle dei capi dei sacerdoti finirono per prevalere.

But they were insistent and urgent, demanding with loud cries that He should be crucified. And their voices prevailed (accomplished their purpose).

24 P ilato allora decise che fosse fatto ciò che chiedevano.

And Pilate gave sentence, that what they asked should be done.

25 E rilasciò loro colui che era stato incarcerato per sedizione e per omicidio e che essi avevano richiesto; e consegnò Gesú alla loro volontà.

So he released the man who had been thrown into prison for riot and murder, for whom they continued to ask, but Jesus he delivered up to be done with as they willed.

26 M entre lo conducevano via, presero un certo Simone di Cirenea che veniva dai campi, e gli misero addosso la croce, perché la portasse dietro a Gesú.

And as they led Him away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross and made him carry it behind Jesus.

27 O r lo seguiva una grande folla di popolo e di donne, che facevano cordoglio e lamenti su di lui.

And there accompanied a great multitude of the people, women who bewailed and lamented Him.

28 M a Gesú. voltandosi verso di loro disse: «Figlie di Gerusalemme, non piangete per me, ma piangete per voi stesse e per i vostri figli.

But Jesus, turning toward them, said, Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.

29 P erché ecco, verranno i giorni in cui si dirà: "Beate le sterili e beati i grembi che non hanno partorito e le mammelle che non hanno allattato!".

For behold, the days are coming during which they will say, Blessed (happy, fortunate, and to be envied) are the barren, and the wombs that have not borne, and the breasts that have never nursed!

30 A llora cominceranno a dire ai monti: "Cadeteci addosso" e alle colline: "Copriteci"

Then they will begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us! and to the hills, Cover (conceal, hide) us!

31 P erché, se tali cose si fanno al legno verde, che cosa sarà fatto al legno secco?».

For if they do these things when the timber is green, what will happen when it is dry?

32 O r venivano condotti con lui anche due malfattori per essere messi a morte.

Two others also, who were criminals, were led away to be executed with Him.

33 E quando giunsero al luogo, detto del Teschio, là crocifissero lui e i malfattori, l'uno a destra e l'altro a sinistra.

And when they came to the place which is called The Skull, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right and one on the left.

34 E Gesú diceva: «Padre perdona loro perché non sanno quello che fanno». Poi, spartite le sue vesti, le tirarono a sorte.

And Jesus prayed, Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. And they divided His garments and distributed them by casting lots for them.

35 E il popolo stava là a guardare, ed anche i magistrati col popolo lo beffavano, dicendo: «Egli ha salvati gli altri, salvi se stesso se veramente egli è il Cristo. l'eletto di Dio».

Now the people stood by '> calmly and leisurely] watching; but the rulers scoffed and sneered ( turned up their noses) at Him, saying, He rescued others '> from death]; let Him now rescue Himself, if He is the Christ (the Messiah) of God, His Chosen One!

36 A nche i soldati lo schernivano, accostandosi e presentandogli dell'aceto.

The soldiers also ridiculed and made sport of Him, coming up and offering Him vinegar (a sour wine mixed with water)

37 e dicendo: «Se tu sei il re dei Giudei, salva te stesso».

And saying, If you are the King of the Jews, save (rescue) Yourself '> from death].

38 S opra il suo capo, inoltre vi era una scritta, in caratteri greci, latini ed ebraici: "COSTUI E IL RE DEI GIUDEI".

For there was also an inscription above Him in letters of Greek and Latin and Hebrew: This is the King of the Jews.

39 O r uno dei malfattori appesi lo ingiuriava, dicendo: «Se tu sei il Cristo, salva te stesso e noi».

One of the criminals who was suspended kept up a railing at Him, saying, Are You not the Christ (the Messiah)? Rescue Yourself and us '> from death]!

40 M a l'altro, rispondendo, lo sgridava dicendo: «Non hai neppure timore di Dio, trovandoti sotto la medesima condanna?

But the other one reproved him, saying, Do you not even fear God, seeing you yourself are under the same sentence of condemnation and suffering the same penalty?

41 N oi in realtà siamo giustamente condannati, perché riceviamo la dovuta pena dei nostri misfatti, ma costui non ha commesso alcun male».

And we indeed suffer it justly, receiving the due reward of our actions; but this Man has done nothing out of the way '> strange or eccentric or perverse or unreasonable].

42 P oi disse a Gesú: «Signore, ricordati di me quando verrai nel tuo regno».

Then he said to Jesus, Lord, remember me when You come in Your kingly glory!

43 A llora Gesú gli disse: «In verità ti dico: oggi tu sarai con me in paradiso».

And He answered him, Truly I tell you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise.

44 E ra circa l'ora sesta, e si fece buio su tutto il paese fino all'ora nona.

It was now about the sixth hour (midday), and darkness enveloped the whole land and earth until the ninth hour (about three o’clock in the afternoon),

45 I l sole si oscurò e la cortina del tempio si squarciò in mezzo.

While the sun’s light faded or was darkened; and the curtain of the temple was torn in two.

46 E Gesú, gridando con gran voce, disse: «Padre, nelle tue mani rimetto il mio spirito». E detto questo, rese lo spirito.

And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit! And with these words, He expired.

47 A llora il centurione, visto quanto era accaduto, glorificò Dio, dicendo: «Veramente quest'uomo era giusto».

Now the centurion, having seen what had taken place, recognized God and thanked and praised Him, and said, Indeed, without question, this Man was upright (just and innocent)!

48 E tutta la folla che si era radunata per osservare ciò che accadeva, alla vista di questo, se ne tornò a casa battendosi il petto.

And all the throngs that had gathered to see this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned to their homes, beating their breasts.

49 M a tutti i suoi conoscenti e le donne che l'avevano seguito dalla Galilea se ne stavano a distanza, osservando queste cose.

And all the acquaintances of and the women who had followed Him from Galilee stood at a distance and watched these things.

50 O r vi era un uomo di nome Giuseppe, che era membro del sinedrio, uomo giusto e buono,

Now notice, there was a man named Joseph from the Jewish town of Arimathea. He was a member of the council (the Sanhedrin), and a good (upright, advantageous) man, and righteous (in right standing with God and man),

51 i l quale non aveva acconsentito alla deliberazione e all'operato degli altri. Egli era di Arimatea, città dei Giudei, e aspettava anch'egli il regno di Dio.

Who had not agreed with or assented to the purpose and action of the others; and he was expecting and waiting for the kingdom of God.

52 C ostui si presentò a Pilato e chiese il corpo di Gesú.

This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

53 E , dopo averlo tirato giú dalla croce, lo avvolse in un lenzuolo e lo mise in un sepolcro scavato nella roccia, dove nessuno era ancora stato sepolto.

Then he took it down and rolled it up in a linen cloth for swathing dead bodies and laid Him in a rock-hewn tomb, where no one had ever yet been laid.

54 E ra il giorno della Preparazione, e il sabato stava per cominciare.

It was the day of Preparation, and the Sabbath was dawning (approaching).

55 L e donne, che erano venute con Gesú dalla Galilea seguendolo da vicino osservarono il sepolcro e come vi era stato deposto il corpo di Gesú;

The women who had come with from Galilee followed closely and saw the tomb and how His body was laid.

56 p oi esse tornarono a casa e prepararono gli aromi e gli unguenti, e durante il sabato si riposarono, secondo il comandamento.

Then they went back and made ready spices and ointments (perfumes). On the Sabbath day they rested in accordance with the commandment.
