Listen to my prayer, O God, and hide not Yourself from my supplication!

2 D ammi ascolto e rispondimi; mi lamento senza posa e gemo,

Attend to me and answer me; I am restless and distraught in my complaint and must moan

3 p er la voce del nemico, per l'oppressione dell'empio perché mi riversano addosso delle calamità e nella loro ira mi perseguitano.

at the noise of the enemy, because of the oppression and threats of the wicked; for they would cast trouble upon me, and in wrath they persecute me.

4 I l mio cuore è angosciato dentro di me, e spaventi mortali mi sono caduti addosso.

My heart is grievously pained within me, and the terrors of death have fallen upon me.

5 P aura e tremito mi hanno assalito e il terrore mi ha sopraffatto.

Fear and trembling have come upon me; horror and fright have overwhelmed me.

6 P erciò ho detto: «Oh, avessi io le ali come una colomba! Me ne volerei lontano per trovare riposo.

And I say, Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest.

7 E cco, me ne fuggirei lontano e dimorerei nel deserto. (Sela)

Yes, I would wander far away, I would lodge in the wilderness. Selah!

8 M i affretterei per trovare un riparo dal vento impetuoso e dalla tempesta».

I would hasten to escape and to find a shelter from the stormy wind and tempest.

9 D istruggili, o Signore, confondi le loro lingue perché ho visto violenza e risse nella città.

Destroy, O Lord, confuse their tongues, for I have seen violence and strife in the city.

10 G iorno e notte si aggirano sulle sue mura; dentro di essa vi è malvagità e perversità.

Day and night they go about on its walls; iniquity and mischief are in its midst.

11 N el suo mezzo vi è cupidigia; oppressione e inganno sono di casa nelle sue vie.

Violence and ruin are within it; fraud and guile do not depart from its streets and marketplaces.

12 P oiché non è stato un mio nemico che mi ha schernito, altrimenti l'avrei sopportato; non è stato uno che mi odiava a levarsi contro di me altrimenti mi sarei nascosto da lui.

For it is not an enemy who reproaches and taunts me—then I might bear it; nor is it one who has hated me who insolently vaunts himself against me—then I might hide from him.

13 M a sei stato tu, un uomo pari a me, mio compagno e mio intimo amico.

But it was you, a man my equal, my companion and my familiar friend.

14 A vevamo insieme dolci colloqui e andavamo in compagnia alla casa di DIO.

We had sweet fellowship together and used to walk to the house of God in company.

15 L i sorprenda la morte, scendano vivi nello Sceol, perché nelle loro dimore e nel loro mezzo non vi è che malvagità.

Let desolations and death come suddenly upon them; let them go down alive to Sheol (the place of the dead), for evils are in their habitations, in their hearts, and their inmost part.

16 Q uanto a me, io invocherò DIO, e l'Eterno mi salverà.

As for me, I will call upon God, and the Lord will save me.

17 L a sera, la mattina e a mezzogiorno mi lamenterò e gemerò, ed egli udrà la mia voce.

Evening and morning and at noon will I utter my complaint and moan and sigh, and He will hear my voice.

18 E gli riscatterà la mia vita e la metterà al sicuro dalla guerra mossa contro di me, perché sono in molti contro di me.

He has redeemed my life in peace from the battle that was against me, for they were many who strove with me.

19 D IO mi ascolterà e li umilierà, egli che siede sovrano da sempre, perché essi non cambiano e non temono DIO. (Sela)

God will hear and humble them, even He Who abides of old— Selah!—because in them there has been no change, and they do not fear, revere, and worship God.

20 E gli ha steso le mani contro quelli che vivevano in pace con lui ha violato il suo patto.

has put forth his hands against those who were at peace with him; he has broken and profaned his agreement.

21 L a sua bocca era piú dolce del burro, ma nel cuore aveva la guerra; le sue parole erano più morbide dell'olio, ma erano spade sguainate.

The words of his mouth were smoother than cream or butter, but war was in his heart; his words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords.

22 G etta sull'Eterno il tuo peso, ed egli ti sosterrà; egli non permetterà mai che il giusto vacilli.

Cast your burden on the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be moved (made to slip, fall, or fail).

23 M a tu, o DIO, farai scendere costoro nel pozzo della perdizione; gli uomini sanguinari e fraudolenti non giungeranno alla metà dei loro giorni; ma io confiderò in te.

But You, O God, will bring down the wicked into the pit of destruction; men of blood and treachery shall not live out half their days. But I will trust in, lean on, and confidently rely on You.
