1 ( 55: 1) Au chef des chantres. Avec instruments à cordes. Cantique de David. (55: 2) O Dieu! prête l'oreille à ma prière, Et ne te dérobe pas à mes supplications!

Listen to my prayer, O God, and hide not Yourself from my supplication!

2 ( 55: 3) Écoute-moi, et réponds-moi! J'erre çà et là dans mon chagrin et je m'agite,

Attend to me and answer me; I am restless and distraught in my complaint and must moan

3 ( 55: 4) A cause de la voix de l'ennemi et de l'oppression du méchant; Car ils font tomber sur moi le malheur, Et me poursuivent avec colère.

at the noise of the enemy, because of the oppression and threats of the wicked; for they would cast trouble upon me, and in wrath they persecute me.

4 ( 55: 5) Mon coeur tremble au dedans de moi, Et les terreurs de la mort me surprennent;

My heart is grievously pained within me, and the terrors of death have fallen upon me.

5 ( 55: 6) La crainte et l'épouvante m'assaillent, Et le frisson m'enveloppe.

Fear and trembling have come upon me; horror and fright have overwhelmed me.

6 ( 55: 7) Je dis: Oh! si j'avais les ailes de la colombe, Je m'envolerais, et je trouverais le repos;

And I say, Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest.

7 ( 55: 8) Voici, je fuirais bien loin, J'irais séjourner au désert; -Pause.

Yes, I would wander far away, I would lodge in the wilderness. Selah!

8 ( 55: 9) Je m'échapperais en toute hâte, Plus rapide que le vent impétueux, que la tempête.

I would hasten to escape and to find a shelter from the stormy wind and tempest.

9 ( 55: 10) Réduis à néant, Seigneur, divise leurs langues! Car je vois dans la ville la violence et les querelles;

Destroy, O Lord, confuse their tongues, for I have seen violence and strife in the city.

10 ( 55: 11) Elles en font jour et nuit le tour sur les murs; L'iniquité et la malice sont dans son sein;

Day and night they go about on its walls; iniquity and mischief are in its midst.

11 ( 55: 12) La méchanceté est au milieu d'elle, Et la fraude et la tromperie ne quittent point ses places.

Violence and ruin are within it; fraud and guile do not depart from its streets and marketplaces.

12 ( 55: 13) Ce n'est pas un ennemi qui m'outrage, je le supporterais; Ce n'est pas mon adversaire qui s'élève contre moi, Je me cacherais devant lui.

For it is not an enemy who reproaches and taunts me—then I might bear it; nor is it one who has hated me who insolently vaunts himself against me—then I might hide from him.

13 ( 55: 14) C'est toi, que j'estimais mon égal, Toi, mon confident et mon ami!

But it was you, a man my equal, my companion and my familiar friend.

14 ( 55: 15) Ensemble nous vivions dans une douce intimité, Nous allions avec la foule à la maison de Dieu!

We had sweet fellowship together and used to walk to the house of God in company.

15 ( 55: 16) Que la mort les surprenne, Qu'ils descendent vivants au séjour des morts! Car la méchanceté est dans leur demeure, au milieu d'eux.

Let desolations and death come suddenly upon them; let them go down alive to Sheol (the place of the dead), for evils are in their habitations, in their hearts, and their inmost part.

16 ( 55: 17) Et moi, je crie à Dieu, Et l'Éternel me sauvera.

As for me, I will call upon God, and the Lord will save me.

17 ( 55: 18) Le soir, le matin, et à midi, je soupire et je gémis, Et il entendra ma voix.

Evening and morning and at noon will I utter my complaint and moan and sigh, and He will hear my voice.

18 ( 55: 19) Il me délivrera de leur approche et me rendra la paix, Car ils sont nombreux contre moi.

He has redeemed my life in peace from the battle that was against me, for they were many who strove with me.

19 ( 55: 20) Dieu entendra, et il les humiliera, Lui qui de toute éternité est assis sur son trône; -Pause. Car il n'y a point en eux de changement, Et ils ne craignent point Dieu.

God will hear and humble them, even He Who abides of old— Selah!—because in them there has been no change, and they do not fear, revere, and worship God.

20 ( 55: 21) Il porte la main sur ceux qui étaient en paix avec lui, Il viole son alliance;

has put forth his hands against those who were at peace with him; he has broken and profaned his agreement.

21 ( 55: 22) Sa bouche est plus douce que la crème, Mais la guerre est dans son coeur; Ses paroles sont plus onctueuses que l'huile, Mais ce sont des épées nues.

The words of his mouth were smoother than cream or butter, but war was in his heart; his words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords.

22 ( 55: 23) Remets ton sort à l'Éternel, et il te soutiendra, Il ne laissera jamais chanceler le juste.

Cast your burden on the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be moved (made to slip, fall, or fail).

23 ( 55: 24) Et toi, ô Dieu! tu les feras descendre au fond de la fosse; Les hommes de sang et de fraude N'atteindront pas la moitié de leurs jours. C'est en toi que je me confie.

But You, O God, will bring down the wicked into the pit of destruction; men of blood and treachery shall not live out half their days. But I will trust in, lean on, and confidently rely on You.
