1 A insi parle l'Éternel: Voici, je fais lever contre Babylone, Et contre les habitants de la Chaldée, Un vent destructeur.

Thus says the Lord: Behold, I will raise up against Babylon and against those who dwell among those rebelling against Me a destroying wind and spirit;

2 J 'envoie contre Babylone des vanneurs qui la vanneront, Qui videront son pays; Ils fondront de toutes parts sur elle, Au jour du malheur.

And I will send to Babylon strangers or winnowers who will winnow her and will empty her land; for in the day of calamity they will be against her on every side.

3 Q u'on tende l'arc contre celui qui tend son arc, Contre celui qui est fier dans sa cuirasse! N'épargnez pas ses jeunes hommes! Exterminez toute son armée!

Against him who bends let the archer bend his bow, and against him who lifts himself up in his coat of mail. And spare not her young men; devote and utterly destroy her entire host.

4 Q u'ils tombent blessés à mort dans le pays des Chaldéens, Percés de coups dans les rues de Babylone!

Thus they shall fall down slain in the land of the Chaldeans, and wounded in her streets.

5 C ar Israël et Juda ne sont point abandonnés de leur Dieu, De l'Éternel des armées, Et le pays des Chaldéens est rempli de crimes Contre le Saint d'Israël.

For Israel has not been widowed and forsaken, nor has Judah, by his God, the Lord of hosts, though their land is full of guilt against the Holy One of Israel.

6 F uyez de Babylone, et que chacun sauve sa vie, De peur que vous ne périssiez dans sa ruine! Car c'est un temps de vengeance pour l'Éternel; Il va lui rendre selon ses oeuvres.

Flee out of the midst of Babylon! Let every man save his life! Let not destruction come upon you through her sin and guilt. For it is the time of the Lord’s vengeance; He will render to her a recompense.

7 B abylone était dans la main de l'Éternel une coupe d'or, Qui enivrait toute la terre; Les nations ont bu de son vin: C'est pourquoi les nations ont été comme en délire.

Babylon was a golden cup in the Lord’s hand, making all the earth drunken. The nations drank of her wine; therefore the nations have gone mad.

8 S oudain Babylone tombe, elle est brisée! Gémissez sur elle, prenez du baume pour sa plaie: Peut-être guérira-t-elle. -

Babylon has suddenly fallen and is shattered (destroyed)! Wail for her! Get balm for her pain; if so she may be healed!

9 N ous avons voulu guérir Babylone, mais elle n'a pas guéri. Abandonnons-la, et allons chacun dans son pays; Car son châtiment atteint jusqu'aux cieux, Et s'élève jusqu'aux nues.

We would have healed Babylon, but she is not healed. Forsake her and let us each go to his own country, for her guilt and the judgment against her reach to heaven and are lifted even to the skies.

10 L 'Éternel manifeste la justice de notre cause; Venez, et racontons dans Sion L'oeuvre de l'Éternel, notre Dieu.

The Lord has brought forth and made known the righteousness; come and let us declare in Zion the work of the Lord our God.

11 A iguisez les flèches, saisissez les boucliers! L'Éternel a excité l'esprit des rois de Médie, Parce qu'il veut détruire Babylone; Car c'est la vengeance de l'Éternel, La vengeance de son temple.

Make clean and sharp the arrows, take up the shields or coats of armor! The Lord has stirred up the spirit of the kings of the Medes, for His purpose concerning Babylon is to destroy it; for that is the vengeance of the Lord, the vengeance of His temple.

12 É levez une bannière contre les murs de Babylone! Fortifiez les postes, placez des gardes, dressez des embuscades! Car l'Éternel a pris une résolution, Et il exécute ce qu'il a prononcé contre les habitants de Babylone.

Set up a standard or signal upon the walls of Babylon! Make the watch and blockade strong, set the guards, prepare the ambushes! For the Lord has both purposed and done that which He spoke against the inhabitants of Babylon.

13 T oi qui habites près des grandes eaux, Et qui as d'immenses trésors, Ta fin est venue, ta cupidité est à son terme!

O you who dwell by many waters, rich in treasures, your end has come, and the line measuring your life is cut.

14 L 'Éternel des armées l'a juré par lui-même: Oui, je te remplirai d'hommes comme de sauterelles, Et ils pousseront contre toi des cris de guerre.

The Lord of hosts has sworn by Himself, saying, Surely I will fill you with men, as with locusts, and they will lift up a song and shout over you.

15 I l a crée la terre par sa puissance, Il a fondé le monde par sa sagesse, Il a étendu les cieux par son intelligence.

He made the earth by His power; He established the world by His wisdom and stretched out the heavens by His understanding.

16 A sa voix, les eaux mugissent dans les cieux, Il fait monter les nuages des extrémités de la terre, Il produit les éclairs et la pluie, Il tire le vent de ses trésors.

When He utters His voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and He causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth. He makes lightnings for the rain and brings forth the wind from His treasuries.

17 T out homme devient stupide par sa science, Tout orfèvre est honteux de son image taillée; Car ses idoles ne sont que mensonge, Il n'y a point en elles de souffle.

Every man has become stupid and brutelike, without knowledge; every goldsmith is put to shame by the images he has made; for his molten idols are a lie, and there is no breath in them.

18 E lles sont une chose de néant, une oeuvre de tromperie; Elles périront, quand viendra le châtiment.

They are worthless (emptiness, falsity, futility), a work of delusion and worthy of derision; in the time of their inspection and punishment they shall perish.

19 C elui qui est la part de Jacob n'est pas comme elles; Car c'est lui qui a tout formé, Et Israël est la tribu de son héritage. L'Éternel des armées est son nom.

Not like these is He Who is the Portion of Jacob, for He is the One Who formed all things, and Israel is the tribe of His inheritance—the Lord of hosts is His name.

20 T u as été pour moi un marteau, un instrument de guerre. J'ai brisé par toi des nations, Par toi j'ai détruit des royaumes.

You are My battle-ax or maul and weapon of war—for with you I break nations in pieces, with you I destroy kingdoms,

21 P ar toi j'ai brisé le cheval et son cavalier; Par toi j'ai brisé le char et celui qui était dessus.

With you I break in pieces the horse and his rider, with you I break in pieces the chariot and the charioteer,

22 P ar toi j'ai brisé l'homme et la femme; Par toi j'ai brisé le vieillard et l'enfant; Par toi j'ai brisé le jeune homme et la jeune fille.

With you I break in pieces man and woman, with you I break in pieces old man and youth, with you I break in pieces young man and maiden,

23 P ar toi j'ai brisé le berger et son troupeau; Par toi j'ai brisé le laboureur et ses boeufs; Par toi j'ai brisé les gouverneurs et les chefs.

With you I break in pieces the shepherd and his flock, with you I break in pieces the farmer and his yoke of oxen, and with you I break in pieces governors and commanders.

24 J e rendrai à Babylone et à tous les habitants de la Chaldée Tout le mal qu'ils ont fait à Sion sous vos yeux, Dit l'Éternel.

And I will repay Babylon and all the inhabitants of Chaldea for all the evil that they have done in Zion—before your very eyes, says the Lord.

25 V oici, j'en veux à toi, montagne de destruction, dit l'Éternel, A toi qui détruisais toute la terre! J'étendrai ma main sur toi, Je te roulerai du haut des rochers, Et je ferai de toi une montagne embrasée.

Behold, I am against you, says the Lord, O destroying mountain, you who destroy the whole earth. I will stretch out My hand over and against you and roll you down from the crags and will make you a burnt-out mountain.

26 O n ne tirera de toi ni pierres angulaires, ni pierres pour fondements; Car tu seras à jamais une ruine, dit l'Éternel...

And they shall not take your cracked stones for a cornerstone, or any stone for foundations, but you shall be waste and desolate forever, says the Lord.

27 É levez une bannière dans le pays! Sonnez de la trompette parmi les nations! Préparez les nations contre elle, Appelez contre elle les royaumes d'Ararat, de Minni et d'Aschkenaz! Établissez contre elle des chefs! Faites avancer des chevaux comme des sauterelles hérissées!

Set up a standard or signal in the land! Blow the trumpet among the nations! Prepare and dedicate the nations for war against her; call against her the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni, and Ashkenaz. Appoint a marshal against her; cause the horses to come up like locusts.

28 P réparez contre elle les nations, les rois de Médie, Ses gouverneurs et tous ses chefs, Et tout le pays sous leur domination!

Prepare and dedicate the nations for war against her—the kings of Media, with their governors and commanders (deputies), and every land of their dominion.

29 L a terre s'ébranle, elle tremble; Car le dessein de l'Éternel contre Babylone s'accomplit; Il va faire du pays de Babylone un désert sans habitants.

The land trembles and writhes in pain and sorrow, for the purposes of the Lord against Babylon stand—to make the land of Babylon a desolation without inhabitant.

30 L es guerriers de Babylone cessent de combattre, Ils se tiennent dans les forteresses; Leur force est épuisée, ils sont comme des femmes. On met le feu aux habitations, On brise les barres.

The mighty warriors of Babylon have ceased to fight; they have remained in their holds. Their might has failed; they have become like women. Her dwelling places are burned up; her bars are broken.

31 L es courriers se rencontrent, Les messagers se croisent, Pour annoncer au roi de Babylone Que sa ville est prise par tous les côtés,

One post shall run to meet another and one messenger to meet another to show the king of Babylon that his city is taken on every side and to its farthest end,

32 Q ue les passages sont envahis, Les marais embrasés par le feu, Et les hommes de guerre consternés.

And that the passages are stopped, and the great marshes they have burned with fire, and the men of war are frightened.

33 C ar ainsi parle l'Éternel des armées, le Dieu d'Israël: La fille de Babylone est comme une aire dans le temps où on la foule; Encore un instant, et le moment de la moisson sera venu pour elle.

For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: The Daughter of Babylon is like a threshing floor at the time it is; yet a little while and the time of harvest shall come to her.

34 N ebucadnetsar, roi de Babylone, m'a dévorée, m'a détruite; Il a fait de moi un vase vide; Tel un dragon, il m'a engloutie, Il a rempli son ventre de ce que j'avais de précieux; Il m'a chassée.

Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon has devoured us, he has crushed us, he has made us an empty vessel. Like a monster he has swallowed us up, he has filled his belly with our delicacies; he has rinsed us out and cast us away.

35 Q ue la violence envers moi et ma chair déchirée retombent sur Babylone! Dit l'habitante de Sion. Que mon sang retombe sur les habitants de la Chaldée! Dit Jérusalem. -

May the violence done to me and to my flesh and blood be upon Babylon, will the inhabitant of Zion say; and, May my blood be upon the inhabitants of Chaldea, will Jerusalem say.

36 C 'est pourquoi ainsi parle l'Éternel: Voici, je défendrai ta cause, Je te vengerai! Je mettrai à sec la mer de Babylone, Et je ferai tarir sa source.

Therefore thus says the Lord: Behold, I will plead your cause and take vengeance for you. I will dry up her lake or great reservoir and make her fountain dry.

37 B abylone sera un monceau de ruines, un repaire de chacals, Un objet de désolation et de moquerie; Il n'y aura plus d'habitants.

And Babylon shall become heaps, a dwelling place of jackals, a horror (an astonishing desolation) and a hissing, without inhabitant.

38 I ls rugiront ensemble comme des lions, Ils pousseront des cris comme des lionceaux.

They shall be roaring together like young lions, they shall be growling like lions’ whelps.

39 Q uand ils seront échauffés, je les ferai boire, Et je les enivrerai, pour qu'ils se livrent à la gaîté, Puis s'endorment d'un sommeil éternel, et ne se réveillent plus, Dit l'Éternel.

When the revelers are inflamed, I will prepare them a feast and make them drunk, that they may rejoice and fall asleep to a perpetual sleep and not waken, says the Lord.

40 J e les ferai descendre comme des agneaux à la tuerie, Comme des béliers et des boucs.

I will bring them down like lambs to the slaughter, like rams together with he-goats.

41 E h quoi! Schéschac est prise! Celle dont la gloire remplissait toute la terre est conquise! Eh quoi! Babylone est détruite au milieu des nations!

How Sheshach is taken! And the praise of the whole earth is surprised and seized! How Babylon has become an astonishing desolation and a horror among the nations!

42 L a mer est montée sur Babylone: Babylone a été couverte par la multitude de ses flots.

The sea has come up upon Babylon; she is covered with the tumult and multitude of its waves.

43 S es villes sont ravagées, La terre est aride et déserte; C'est un pays où personne n'habite, Où ne passe aucun homme.

Her cities have become a desolation and a horror, a land of drought and a wilderness, a land in which no one lives, nor does any son of man pass through it.

44 J e châtierai Bel à Babylone, J'arracherai de sa bouche ce qu'il a englouti, Et les nations n'afflueront plus vers lui. La muraille même de Babylone est tombée!

And I will punish and execute judgment upon Bel in Babylon and take out of his mouth what he has swallowed up. The nations will not flow any more to him. Yes, the wall of Babylon has fallen!

45 S ortez du milieu d'elle, mon peuple, Et que chacun sauve sa vie, En échappant à la colère ardente de l'Éternel!

My people, come out of the midst of her! And let every man save his life from the fierce anger of the Lord!

46 Q ue votre coeur ne se trouble point, et ne vous effrayez pas Des bruits qui se répandront dans le pays; Car cette année surviendra un bruit, Et l'année suivante un autre bruit, La violence régnera dans le pays, Et un dominateur s'élèvera contre un autre dominateur.

And beware, lest your heart faint and you be afraid at the report (rumor) heard in the land; for in one year shall one report come and in another year another report, and violence shall be in the land, ruler against ruler.

47 C 'est pourquoi voici, les jours viennent Où je châtierai les idoles de Babylone, Et tout son pays sera couvert de honte; Tout ses morts tomberont au milieu d'elle.

Therefore behold, the days will come when I will execute judgment and punishment upon the idols of Babylon; her whole land will be confounded and put to shame, and all her slain will fall in the midst of her.

48 S ur Babylone retentiront les cris de joie des cieux et de la terre, Et de tout ce qu'ils renferment; Car du septentrion les dévastateurs fondront sur elle, Dit l'Éternel.

Then heaven and earth and all that is in them shall sing for joy over Babylon, for the destroyers shall come against her from the north, says the Lord.

49 B abylone aussi tombera, ô morts d'Israël, Comme elle a fait tomber les morts de tout le pays.

As Babylon caused the slain of Israel to fall, so at Babylon shall fall the slain of all land.

50 V ous qui avez échappé au glaive, partez, ne tardez pas! De la terre lointaine, pensez à l'Éternel, Et que Jérusalem soit présente à vos coeurs! -

You who have escaped the sword, go away, stand not still! remember the Lord from afar, and let Jerusalem come into your mind.

51 N ous étions confus, quand nous entendions l'insulte; La honte couvrait nos visages, Quand des étrangers sont venus Dans le sanctuaire de la maison de l'Éternel. -

We are confounded and ashamed, for we have heard reproach; confusion and shame have covered our faces, for strangers have come into the sacred parts of the sanctuary of the Lord.

52 C 'est pourquoi voici, les jours viennent, dit l'Éternel, Où je châtierai ses idoles; Et dans tout son pays les blessés gémiront.

Therefore behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will execute judgment upon idols and images, and throughout all her land the wounded will groan.

53 Q uand Babylone s'élèverait jusqu'aux cieux, Quand elle rendrait inaccessibles ses hautes forteresses, J'enverrai contre elle les dévastateurs, dit l'Éternel...

Though Babylon should mount up to heaven, and though she should fortify her strong height (her lofty stronghold), yet destroyers will come upon her from Me, says the Lord.

54 D es cris s'échappent de Babylone, Et le désastre est grand dans le pays des Chaldéens.

The sound of a cry from Babylon, and great destruction and ruin from the land of the Chaldeans!

55 C ar l'Éternel ravage Babylone, Il en fait cesser les cris retentissants; Les flots des dévastateurs mugissent comme de grandes eaux, Dont le bruit tumultueux se fait entendre.

For the Lord is destroying Babylon and laying her waste and stilling her great voice. And the waves roar like great waters, the noise of their voices is raised up.

56 O ui, le dévastateur fond sur elle, sur Babylone; Les guerriers de Babylone sont pris, Leurs arcs sont brisés. Car l'Éternel est un Dieu qui rend à chacun selon ses oeuvres, Qui paie à chacun son salaire.

For the destroyer is coming upon her, upon Babylon; and her mighty warriors are taken, their bows are broken in pieces; for the Lord is a God of recompense; He will surely requite.

57 J 'enivrerai ses princes et ses sages, Ses gouverneurs, ses chefs et ses guerriers; Ils s'endormiront d'un sommeil éternel, et ne se réveilleront plus, Dit le roi, dont l'Éternel des armées est le nom.

And I will make drunk her princes and her wise men, her governors and her commanders (deputies) and her mighty warriors; and they will sleep a perpetual sleep and not waken, says the King—the Lord of hosts is His name.

58 A insi parle l'Éternel des armées: Les larges murailles de Babylone seront renversées, Ses hautes portes seront brûlées par le feu; Ainsi les peuples auront travaillé en vain, Les nations se seront fatiguées pour le feu.

Thus says the Lord of hosts: The broad walls of Babylon shall be utterly overthrown and made bare, and her high gates shall be burned with fire; the peoples shall labor in vain, and the nations to satisfy the fire, and they shall be weary.

59 O rdre donné par Jérémie, le prophète, à Seraja, fils de Nérija, fils de Machséja, lorsqu'il se rendit à Babylone avec Sédécias, roi de Juda, la quatrième année du règne de Sédécias. Or, Seraja était premier chambellan.

The word that Jeremiah the prophet commanded Seraiah son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, when he went with Zedekiah king of Judah to Babylon in the fourth year of his reign. Now this Seraiah was chief chamberlain or quartermaster.

60 J érémie écrivit dans un livre tous les malheurs qui devaient arriver à Babylone, toutes ces paroles qui sont écrites sur Babylone.

So Jeremiah wrote in a book all the evil that would come upon Babylon—even all these words that are written against Babylon.

61 J érémie dit à Seraja: Lorsque tu seras arrivé à Babylone, tu auras soin de lire toutes ces paroles,

And Jeremiah said to Seraiah, When you come to Babylon, see to it that you read all these words.

62 e t tu diras: Éternel, c'est toi qui as déclaré que ce lieu serait détruit, et qu'il ne serait plus habité ni par les hommes ni par les bêtes, mais qu'il deviendrait un désert pour toujours.

Then say, O Lord, You have spoken concerning this place that it shall be cut off, so that nothing shall remain and dwell in it, neither man nor beast; but it shall be desolate forever.

63 E t quand tu auras achevé la lecture de ce livre, tu y attacheras une pierre, et tu le jetteras dans l'Euphrate,

And it shall be that when you have finished reading this book, you shall bind a stone to it and cast it into the midst of the Euphrates.

64 e t tu diras: Ainsi Babylone sera submergée, elle ne se relèvera pas des malheurs que j'amènerai sur elle; ils tomberont épuisés. Jusqu'ici sont les paroles de Jérémie.

Then say, Thus will Babylon sink and not rise because of the evil that I will bring upon her; and will be weary (hopelessly exhausted). Thus far are the words of Jeremiah.
