A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor rather than silver and gold.

2 L e riche et le pauvre se rencontrent; C'est l'Éternel qui les a faits l'un et l'autre.

The rich and poor meet together; the Lord is the Maker of them all.

3 L 'homme prudent voit le mal et se cache, Mais les simples avancent et sont punis.

A prudent man sees the evil and hides himself, but the simple pass on and are punished.

4 L e fruit de l'humilité, de la crainte de l'Éternel, C'est la richesse, la gloire et la vie.

The reward of humility and the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life.

5 D es épines, des pièges sont sur la voie de l'homme pervers; Celui qui garde son âme s'en éloigne.

Thorns and snares are in the way of the obstinate and willful; he who guards himself will be far from them.

6 I nstruis l'enfant selon la voie qu'il doit suivre; Et quand il sera vieux, il ne s'en détournera pas.

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

7 L e riche domine sur les pauvres, Et celui qui emprunte est l'esclave de celui qui prête.

The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.

8 C elui qui sème l'iniquité moissonne l'iniquité, Et la verge de sa fureur disparaît.

He who sows iniquity will reap calamity and futility, and the rod of his wrath will fail.

9 L 'homme dont le regard est bienveillant sera béni, Parce qu'il donne de son pain au pauvre.

He who has a bountiful eye shall be blessed, for he gives of his bread to the poor.

10 C hasse le moqueur, et la querelle prendra fin; Les disputes et les outrages cesseront.

Drive out the scoffer, and contention will go out; yes, strife and abuse will cease.

He who loves purity and the pure in heart and who is gracious in speech—because of the grace of his lips will he have the king for his friend.

12 L es yeux de l'Éternel gardent la science, Mais il confond les paroles du perfide.

The eyes of the Lord keep guard over knowledge and him who has it, but He overthrows the words of the treacherous.

13 L e paresseux dit: Il y a un lion dehors! Je serai tué dans les rues!

The sluggard says, There is a lion outside! I shall be slain in the streets!

14 L a bouche des étrangères est une fosse profonde; Celui contre qui l'Éternel est irrité y tombera.

The mouth of a loose woman is a deep pit; he with whom the Lord is indignant and who is abhorrent to Him will fall into it.

15 L a folie est attachée au coeur de l'enfant; La verge de la correction l'éloignera de lui.

Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him.

16 O pprimer le pauvre pour augmenter son bien, C'est donner au riche pour n'arriver qu'à la disette.

He who oppresses the poor to get gain for himself and he who gives to the rich—both will surely come to want.

17 P rête l'oreille, et écoute les paroles des sages; Applique ton coeur à ma science.

Listen (consent and submit) to the words of the wise, and apply your mind to my knowledge;

18 C ar il est bon que tu les gardes au dedans de toi, Et qu'elles soient toutes présentes sur tes lèvres.

For it will be pleasant if you keep them in your mind; your lips will be accustomed to them.

19 A fin que ta confiance repose sur l'Éternel, Je veux t'instruire aujourd'hui, oui, toi.

So that your trust (belief, reliance, support, and confidence) may be in the Lord, I have made known these things to you today, even to you.

20 N 'ai-je pas déjà pour toi mis par écrit Des conseils et des réflexions,

Have I not written to you excellent things in counsels and knowledge,

21 P our t'enseigner des choses sûres, des paroles vraies, Afin que tu répondes par des paroles vraies à celui qui t'envoie?

To make you know the certainty of the words of truth, that you may give a true answer to those who sent you?

22 N e dépouille pas le pauvre, parce qu'il est pauvre, Et n'opprime pas le malheureux à la porte;

Rob not the poor, neither oppress the afflicted at the gate,

23 C ar l'Éternel défendra leur cause, Et il ôtera la vie à ceux qui les auront dépouillés.

For the Lord will plead their cause and deprive of life those who deprive.

24 N e fréquente pas l'homme colère, Ne va pas avec l'homme violent,

Make no friendships with a man given to anger, and with a wrathful man do not associate,

25 D e peur que tu ne t'habitues à ses sentiers, Et qu'ils ne deviennent un piège pour ton âme.

Lest you learn his ways and get yourself into a snare.

26 N e sois pas parmi ceux qui prennent des engagements, Parmi ceux qui cautionnent pour des dettes;

Be not one of those who strike hands and pledge themselves, or of those who become security for another’s debts.

27 S i tu n'as pas de quoi payer, Pourquoi voudrais-tu qu'on enlève ton lit de dessous toi?

If you have nothing with which to pay, why should he take your bed from under you?

28 N e déplace pas la borne ancienne, Que tes pères ont posée.

Remove not the ancient landmark which your fathers have set up.

29 S i tu vois un homme habile dans son ouvrage, Il se tient auprès des rois; Il ne se tient pas auprès des gens obscurs.

Do you see a man diligent and skillful in his business? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men.
