1 L ouez l'Éternel, car il est bon, Car sa miséricorde dure à toujours!

O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; for His mercy and loving-kindness endure forever!

2 Q u'ainsi disent les rachetés de l'Éternel, Ceux qu'il a délivrés de la main de l'ennemi,

Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom He has delivered from the hand of the adversary,

3 E t qu'il a rassemblés de tous les pays, De l'orient et de l'occident, du nord et de la mer!

And gathered them out of the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the Sea in the south.

4 I ls erraient dans le désert, ils marchaient dans la solitude, Sans trouver une ville où ils pussent habiter.

Some wandered in the wilderness in a solitary desert track; they found no city for habitation.

5 I ls souffraient de la faim et de la soif; Leur âme était languissante.

Hungry and thirsty, they fainted; their lives were near to being extinguished.

6 D ans leur détresse, ils crièrent à l'Éternel, Et il les délivra de leurs angoisses;

Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and He delivered them out of their distresses.

7 I l les conduisit par le droit chemin, Pour qu'ils arrivassent dans une ville habitable.

He led them forth by the straight and right way, that they might go to a city where they could establish their homes.

8 Q u'ils louent l'Éternel pour sa bonté, Et pour ses merveilles en faveur des fils de l'homme!

Oh, that men would praise the Lord for His goodness and loving-kindness and His wonderful works to the children of men!

9 C ar il a satisfait l'âme altérée, Il a comblé de biens l'âme affamée.

For He satisfies the longing soul and fills the hungry soul with good.

10 C eux qui avaient pour demeure les ténèbres et l'ombre de la mort Vivaient captifs dans la misère et dans les chaînes,

Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and in irons,

11 P arce qu'ils s'étaient révoltés contre les paroles de Dieu, Parce qu'ils avaient méprisé le conseil du Très Haut.

Because they had rebelled against the words of God and spurned the counsel of the Most High.

12 I l humilia leur coeur par la souffrance; Ils succombèrent, et personne ne les secourut.

Therefore He bowed down their hearts with hard labor; they stumbled and fell down, and there was none to help.

13 D ans leur détresse, ils crièrent à l'Éternel, Et il les délivra de leurs angoisses;

Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and He saved them out of their distresses.

14 I l les fit sortir des ténèbres et de l'ombre de la mort, Et il rompit leurs liens.

He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death and broke apart the bonds that held them.

15 Q u'ils louent l'Éternel pour sa bonté, Et pour ses merveilles en faveur des fils de l'homme!

Oh, that men would praise the Lord for His goodness and loving-kindness and His wonderful works to the children of men!

16 C ar il a brisé les portes d'airain, Il a rompu les verrous de fer.

For He has broken the gates of bronze and cut the bars of iron apart.

17 L es insensés, par leur conduite coupable Et par leurs iniquités, s'étaient rendus malheureux.

Some are fools because of the way of their transgressions and are afflicted because of their iniquities.

18 L eur âme avait en horreur toute nourriture, Et ils touchaient aux portes de la mort.

They loathe every kind of food, and they draw near to the gates of death.

19 D ans leur détresse, ils crièrent à l'Éternel, Et il les délivra de leurs angoisses;

Then they cry to the Lord in their trouble, and He delivers them out of their distresses.

20 I l envoya sa parole et les guérit, Il les fit échapper de la fosse.

He sends forth His word and heals them and rescues them from the pit and destruction.

21 Q u'ils louent l'Éternel pour sa bonté, Et pour ses merveilles en faveur des fils de l'homme!

Oh, that men would praise the Lord for His goodness and loving-kindness and His wonderful works to the children of men!

22 Q u'ils offrent des sacrifices d'actions de grâces, Et qu'ils publient ses oeuvres avec des cris de joie!

And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving and rehearse His deeds with shouts of joy and singing!

23 C eux qui étaient descendus sur la mer dans des navires, Et qui travaillaient sur les grandes eaux,

Some go down to the sea and travel over it in ships to do business in great waters;

24 C eux-là virent les oeuvres de l'Éternel Et ses merveilles au milieu de l'abîme.

These see the works of the Lord and His wonders in the deep.

25 I l dit, et il fit souffler la tempête, Qui souleva les flots de la mer.

For He commands and raises up the stormy wind, which lifts up the waves of the sea.

26 I ls montaient vers les cieux, ils descendaient dans l'abîme; Leur âme était éperdue en face du danger;

mount up to the heavens, they go down again to the deeps; their courage melts away because of their plight.

27 S aisis de vertige, ils chancelaient comme un homme ivre, Et toute leur habileté était anéantie.

They reel to and fro and stagger like a drunken man and are at their wits’ end.

28 D ans leur détresse, ils crièrent à l'Éternel, Et il les délivra de leurs angoisses;

Then they cry to the Lord in their trouble, and He brings them out of their distresses.

29 I l arrêta la tempête, ramena le calme, Et les ondes se turent.

He hushes the storm to a calm and to a gentle whisper, so that the waves of the sea are still.

30 I ls se réjouirent de ce qu'elles s'étaient apaisées, Et l'Éternel les conduisit au port désiré.

Then the men are glad because of the calm, and He brings them to their desired haven.

31 Q u'ils louent l'Éternel pour sa bonté, Et pour ses merveilles en faveur des fils de l'homme!

Oh, that men would praise the Lord for His goodness and loving-kindness and His wonderful works to the children of men!

32 Q u'ils l'exaltent dans l'assemblée du peuple, Et qu'ils le célèbrent dans la réunion des anciens!

Let them exalt Him also in the congregation of the people and praise Him in the company of the elders.

33 I l change les fleuves en désert, Et les sources d'eaux en terre desséchée,

He turns rivers into a wilderness, water springs into a thirsty ground,

34 L e pays fertile en pays salé, A cause de la méchanceté de ses habitants.

A fruitful land into a barren, salt waste, because of the wickedness of those who dwell in it.

35 I l change le désert en étang, Et la terre aride en sources d'eaux,

He turns a wilderness into a pool of water and a dry ground into water springs;

36 E t il y établit ceux qui sont affamés. Ils fondent une ville pour l'habiter;

And there He makes the hungry to dwell, that they may prepare a city for habitation,

37 I ls ensemencent des champs, plantent des vignes, Et ils en recueillent les produits.

And sow fields, and plant vineyards which yield fruits of increase.

38 I l les bénit, et ils deviennent très nombreux, Et il ne diminue point leur bétail.

He blesses them also, so that they are multiplied greatly, and allows not their cattle to decrease.

39 S ont-ils amoindris et humiliés Par l'oppression, le malheur et la souffrance;

When they are diminished and bowed down through oppression, trouble, and sorrow,

40 V erse-t-il le mépris sur les grands, Les fait-il errer dans des déserts sans chemin,

He pours contempt upon princes and causes them to wander in waste places where there is no road.

41 I l relève l'indigent et le délivre de la misère, Il multiplie les familles comme des troupeaux.

Yet He raises the poor and needy from affliction and makes their families like a flock.

42 L es hommes droits le voient et se réjouissent, Mais toute iniquité ferme la bouche.

The upright shall see it and be glad, but all iniquity shall shut its mouth.

43 Q ue celui qui est sage prenne garde à ces choses, Et qu'il soit attentif aux bontés de l'Éternel.

Whoso is wise will observe and heed these things; and they will diligently consider the mercy and loving-kindness of the Lord.
