1 C elebrate l'Eterno, perché egli è buono, perché la sua benignità dura in eterno.

O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; for His mercy and loving-kindness endure forever!

2 C osí dicano i riscattati dall'Eterno, che egli ha liberato dalla mano dell'avversario,

Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom He has delivered from the hand of the adversary,

3 e ha raccolto da vari paesi, da oriente e da occidente, da settentrione e da mezzogiorno.

And gathered them out of the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the Sea in the south.

4 E ssi andavano errando nel deserto, in luoghi desolati, e non trovavano alcuna città da abitare.

Some wandered in the wilderness in a solitary desert track; they found no city for habitation.

5 A ffamati e assetati, la vita veniva meno in loro.

Hungry and thirsty, they fainted; their lives were near to being extinguished.

6 M a nella loro avversità gridarono all'Eterno ed egli li liberò dalle loro angosce;

Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and He delivered them out of their distresses.

7 e li condusse per la diritta via, perché giungessero a una città da abitare.

He led them forth by the straight and right way, that they might go to a city where they could establish their homes.

8 C elebrino l'Eterno per la sua benignità e per le sue meraviglie in favore dei figli degli uomini.

Oh, that men would praise the Lord for His goodness and loving-kindness and His wonderful works to the children of men!

9 P oiché egli ha saziato l'anima assetata e ha ricolmato di beni l'anima affamata.

For He satisfies the longing soul and fills the hungry soul with good.

10 A ltri dimoravano nelle tenebre e nell'ombra di morte, prigionieri nell'afflizione e nelle catene.

Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and in irons,

11 p erché si erano ribellati alle parole di DIO e avevano disprezzato il consiglio dell'Altissimo;

Because they had rebelled against the words of God and spurned the counsel of the Most High.

12 p er cui egli abbattè il cuor loro con affanni; essi caddero, e non vi fu alcuno che li soccorse.

Therefore He bowed down their hearts with hard labor; they stumbled and fell down, and there was none to help.

13 M a nella loro avversità gridarono all'Eterno, ed egli li salvò dalle loro angosce.

Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and He saved them out of their distresses.

14 l i trasse fuori dalle tenebre e dall'ombra di morte e spezzò i loro legami.

He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death and broke apart the bonds that held them.

15 C elebrino l'Eterno per la sua benignità e per le sue meraviglie in favore dei figli degli uomini.

Oh, that men would praise the Lord for His goodness and loving-kindness and His wonderful works to the children of men!

16 p erché egli ha abbattuto le porte di bronzo e ha spezzato le sbarre di ferro.

For He has broken the gates of bronze and cut the bars of iron apart.

17 D egli stolti soffrivano per il loro comportamento ribelle e per i loro peccati;

Some are fools because of the way of their transgressions and are afflicted because of their iniquities.

18 e ssi detestavano ogni cibo ed erano giunti alle soglie della morte.

They loathe every kind of food, and they draw near to the gates of death.

19 m a nella loro avversità gridarono all'Eterno, ed egli li salvò dalle loro angosce.

Then they cry to the Lord in their trouble, and He delivers them out of their distresses.

20 E gli mandò la sua parola e li guarì, li scampò dalla fossa.

He sends forth His word and heals them and rescues them from the pit and destruction.

21 C elebrino l'Eterno per la sua benignità e per le sue meraviglie in favore dei figli degli uomini.

Oh, that men would praise the Lord for His goodness and loving-kindness and His wonderful works to the children of men!

22 O ffrano sacrifici di lode e raccontino le sue opere con canti di gioia.

And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving and rehearse His deeds with shouts of joy and singing!

23 Q uelli che scendono in mare sulle navi e che fanno commercio sulle grandi acque.

Some go down to the sea and travel over it in ships to do business in great waters;

24 v edono le opere dell'Eterno e le sue meraviglie negli abissi del mare.

These see the works of the Lord and His wonders in the deep.

25 P oiché egli comanda e fa levare un vento di tempesta che solleva le onde del mare.

For He commands and raises up the stormy wind, which lifts up the waves of the sea.

26 E ssi salgono fino al cielo e sprofondano negli abissi; la loro anima viene meno per l'angoscia.

mount up to the heavens, they go down again to the deeps; their courage melts away because of their plight.

27 B arcollano e traballano come degli ubriachi, e non sanno piú che fare.

They reel to and fro and stagger like a drunken man and are at their wits’ end.

28 M a nella loro avversità gridano all'Eterno, ed egli li trae fuori dalle loro angosce.

Then they cry to the Lord in their trouble, and He brings them out of their distresses.

29 E gli riduce la tempesta a un mormorio e le sue onde son fatte tacere.

He hushes the storm to a calm and to a gentle whisper, so that the waves of the sea are still.

30 A l loro acquetarsi essi si rallegrano, ed egli li conduce al porto da loro desiderato.

Then the men are glad because of the calm, and He brings them to their desired haven.

31 C elebrino l'Eterno per la sua benignità e per le sue meraviglie in favore dei figli degli uomini;

Oh, that men would praise the Lord for His goodness and loving-kindness and His wonderful works to the children of men!

32 l o esaltino nell'assemblea del popolo e lo lodino nel consiglio degli anziani.

Let them exalt Him also in the congregation of the people and praise Him in the company of the elders.

33 E gli cambia i fiumi in deserto, e le sorgenti d'acqua in luoghi aridi.

He turns rivers into a wilderness, water springs into a thirsty ground,

34 l a terra fertile in luogo arido per la malvagità dei suoi abitanti.

A fruitful land into a barren, salt waste, because of the wickedness of those who dwell in it.

35 E gli cambia il deserto in lago e la terra arida in sorgenti d'acqua.

He turns a wilderness into a pool of water and a dry ground into water springs;

36 L à egli fa abitare gli affamati, ed essi innalzano una città da abitare.

And there He makes the hungry to dwell, that they may prepare a city for habitation,

37 V i seminano campi e vi piantano vigne che producono un abbondante raccolto.

And sow fields, and plant vineyards which yield fruits of increase.

38 E gli li benedice e moltiplicano grandemente, ed egli non fa diminuire il loro bestiame.

He blesses them also, so that they are multiplied greatly, and allows not their cattle to decrease.

39 M a poi vengono ridotti a pochi e sono indeboliti per l'oppressione, l'avversità e gli affanni.

When they are diminished and bowed down through oppression, trouble, and sorrow,

40 E gli getta il disprezzo sui principi e li fa errare per luoghi deserti, dove non c'è via alcuna.

He pours contempt upon princes and causes them to wander in waste places where there is no road.

41 M a solleva il bisognoso dalla miseria e accresce le loro famiglie come un gregge.

Yet He raises the poor and needy from affliction and makes their families like a flock.

42 G li uomini retti vedono questo e si rallegrano, ma tutti i malvagi hanno la bocca chiusa.

The upright shall see it and be glad, but all iniquity shall shut its mouth.

43 C hi è saggio osservi queste cose e consideri la benignità dell'Eterno.

Whoso is wise will observe and heed these things; and they will diligently consider the mercy and loving-kindness of the Lord.
