1 « Preghiera dell'afflitto mentre è abbattuto ed effonde il suo lamento davanti all'Eterno.» O Eterno ascolta la mia preghiera e giunga a te il mio grido.

Hear my prayer, O Lord, and let my cry come to You.

2 N on nascondermi il tuo volto nel giorno della mia avversità. Tendi verso di me il tuo orecchio; quando ti invoco affrettati a rispondermi.

Hide not Your face from me in the day when I am in distress! Incline Your ear to me; in the day when I call, answer me speedily.

3 P oiché i miei giorni svaniscono come fumo e le mie ossa ardono come un tizzone.

For my days consume away like smoke, and my bones burn like a firebrand or like a hearth.

4 I l mio cuore è percosso e inaridisce come l'erba, e dimentico persino di prendere cibo.

My heart is smitten like grass and withered, so that I forget to eat my food.

5 A forza di gemere la mia pelle si attacca alle mie ossa.

By reason of my loud groaning my flesh cleaves to my bones.

6 R assomiglio al pellicano del deserto e sono diventato come il gufo dei luoghi desolati.

I am like a melancholy pelican or vulture of the wilderness; I am like a owl of the waste places.

7 S ono insonne e sono come il passero solitario sul tetto.

I am sleepless and lie awake, like a bereaved sparrow alone on the housetop.

8 I miei nemici mi scherniscono tutto il giorno; quelli che mi deridono imprecano contro di me.

My adversaries taunt and reproach me all the day; and they who are angry with me use my name as a curse.

9 P oiché mangio cenere come pane e mescolo lacrime a quel che bevo,

For I have eaten the ashes as if they were bread and have mingled my drink with weeping

10 S í, a motivo del tuo sdegno e della tua ira, mi hai sollevato e gettato lontano,

Because of Your indignation and Your wrath, for You have taken me up and cast me away.

11 I miei giorni sono come ombra che si allunga, e io inaridisco come erba.

My days are like an evening shadow that stretches out and declines; and I am withered like grass.

12 M a tu, o Eterno, rimani per sempre, e il tuo ricordo dura per ogni età.

But You, O Lord, are enthroned forever; and the fame of Your name endures to all generations.

13 T u ti leverai e avrai compassione di Sion, perché è tempo di usarle misericordia; e il tempo fissato è giunto.

You will arise and have mercy and loving-kindness for Zion, for it is time to have pity and compassion for her; yes, the set time has come.

14 P oiché i tuoi servi hanno affezione alle sue stesse pietre e hanno pietà della sua polvere.

For Your servants take pleasure in the stones and show pity for her dust.

15 S í, le nazioni temeranno il nome dell'Eterno e tutti i re della terra la tua gloria,

So the nations shall fear and worshipfully revere the name of the Lord, and all the kings of the earth Your glory.

16 q uando l'Eterno ricostruirà Sion e apparirà nella sua gloria.

When the Lord builds up Zion, He will appear in His glory;

17 E gli ascolterà la preghiera dei derelitti e non disprezzerà la loro supplica.

He will regard the plea of the destitute and will not despise their prayer.

18 Q uesto sarà scritto per la generazione futura, e il popolo che sarà creato loderà l'Eterno,

Let this be recorded for the generation yet unborn, that a people yet to be created shall praise the Lord.

19 p erché egli guarda dall'alto del suo santuario; dal cielo l'Eterno osserva la terra,

For He looked down from the height of His sanctuary, from heaven did the Lord behold the earth,

20 p er udire il gemito dei prigionieri, per liberare i condannati a morte;

To hear the sighing and groaning of the prisoner, to loose those who are appointed to death,

21 a ffinché proclamino in Sion il nome dell'Eterno e la sua lode in Gerusalemme,

So that men may declare the name of the Lord in Zion and His praise in Jerusalem

22 q uando i popoli e i regni si raduneranno insieme per servire l'Eterno.

When peoples are gathered together, and the kingdoms, to worship and serve the Lord.

23 P er via egli ha diminuito il mio vigore e ha abbreviato i miei giorni.

He has afflicted and weakened my strength, humbling and bringing me low in the way; He has shortened my days.

24 H o detto: «DIO mio, non portarmi via nel mezzo dei miei giorni. I tuoi anni durano per ogni età.

I said, O my God, take me not away in the midst of my days, You Whose years continue throughout all generations.

25 A nticamente tu hai stabilito la terra e i cieli sono opera delle tue mani;

At the beginning You existed and laid the foundations of the earth; the heavens are the work of Your hands.

26 e ssi periranno, ma tu rimarrai: si logoreranno tutti come un vestito; tu li muterai come una veste ed essi saranno cambiati,

They shall perish, but You shall remain and endure; yes, all of them shall wear out and become old like a garment. Like clothing You shall change them, and they shall be changed and pass away.

27 M a tu sei sempre lo stesso e gli anni tuoi non avranno mai fine.

But You remain the same, and Your years shall have no end.

28 I figli dei tuoi servi avranno una dimora, e la loro progenie sarà stabile davanti a te».

The children of Your servants shall dwell safely and continue, and their descendants shall be established before You.
