Hear this, all you peoples; give ear, all you inhabitants of the world,

2 s í plebei e nobili, ricchi e poveri assieme.

Both low and high, rich and poor together:

3 L a mia bocca proferirà parole di sapienza, e la meditazione del mio cuore porterá intendimento.

My mouth shall speak wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be understanding.

4 p orgerò l'orecchio a un proverbio, esporrò il mio enigma con l'arpa.

I will submit and consent to a parable or proverb; to the music of a lyre I will unfold my riddle (my problem).

5 P erché dovrei temere nei giorni dell'avversità, quando mi circonda la malvagità dei miei avversari,

Why should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of those who would supplant me surrounds me on every side,

6 q uelli che confidano nei loro beni e si gloriano nell'abbondanza della loro ricchezza?

Even of those who trust in and lean on their wealth and boast of the abundance of their riches?

7 N essuno può in alcun modo riscattare il proprio fratello, né dare a DIO il prezzo del suo riscattó,

None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him—

8 p erché il riscatto della sua anima è troppo caro, e il suo costo non basterebbe mai,

For the ransom of a life is too costly, and can never suffice—

9 p er far sí che egli viva per sempre e non veda la fossa.

So that he should live on forever and never see the pit (the grave) and corruption.

10 I nfatti tutti vedono che i savi muoiono e che nello stesso modo periscono gli stolti e gli insensati, e lasciano ad altri i loro beni.

For he sees that even wise men die; the fool and the stupid alike perish and leave their wealth to others.

11 I nternamente essi pensano che le loro case dureranno per sempre, le loro abitazioni siano eterne, e cosí danno i loro nomi alle terre.

Their inward thought is that their houses will continue forever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands their own and after their own names.

12 E ppure anche l'uomo che vive nelle ricchezze non dura; egli è simile alle bestie che periscono.

But man, with all his honor and pomp, does not remain; he is like the beasts that perish.

13 Q uesto è il comportamento degli stolti e di quelli che li seguono e approvano i loro discorsi. (Sela)

This is the fate of those who are foolishly confident, yet after them men approve their sayings. Selah!

14 S ono sospinti come pecore verso lo Sceol, la morte li ingoierà, e al mattino gli uomini retti regneranno su di loro. Il loro sfarzo svanirà nello Sceol lontano dalla loro dimora.

Like sheep they are appointed for Sheol (the place of the dead); death shall be their shepherd. And the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their form and beauty shall be consumed, for Sheol shall be their dwelling.

15 M a DIO riscatterà la mia anima dal potere dello Sceol, perché egli mi accoglierà. (Sela)

But God will redeem me from the power of Sheol (the place of the dead); for He will receive me. Selah!

16 N on temere quando uno si arricchisce, quando la gloria della sua casa aumenta,

Be not afraid when one is made rich, when the wealth and glory of his house are increased;

17 p erché quando morrà non porterà nulla con sé; la sua gloria non scenderà dietro di lui.

For when he dies he will carry nothing away; his glory will not descend after him.

18 A nche se in vita egli si riteneva felice (la gente infatti ti loda quanto tu prosperi)

Though while he lives he counts himself happy and prosperous, and though a man gets praise when he does well,

19 e gli raggiungerà la generazione dei suoi padri, che non vedranno mai piú la luce.

He will go to the generation of his fathers, who will nevermore see the light.

20 L 'uomo che vive nelle ricchezze senza avere intendimento è simile alle bestie che periscono.

A man who is held in honor and understands not is like the beasts that perish.
