When Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the royal descendants.

But Jehosheba, the daughter of King Jehoram, sister of Ahaziah, stole Joash son of Ahaziah from among the king’s sons, who were to be slain, even him and his nurse, and hid them from Athaliah in an inner storeroom for beds; so he was not slain.

3 R imase quindi nascosto con lei per sei anni nella casa dell'Eterno, mentre Athaliah regnava sul paese.

Joash was with his nurse hidden in the house of the Lord for six years. And Athaliah reigned over the land.

4 I l settimo anno Jehoiada mandò a chiamare i capi di centinaia delle guardie del corpo e delle guardie e li fece venire presso di sé nella casa dell'Eterno; egli stipulò con loro un patto, li fece giurare nella casa dell'Eterno e mostrò loro il figlio del re.

In the seventh year Jehoiada sent for the captains over hundreds of the Carites and of the guards or runners and brought them to him to the house of the Lord and made a covenant with them and took an oath from them in the house of the Lord and showed them the king’s son.

5 P oi ordinò loro, dicendo: «Questo è ciò che voi farete: un terzo di quelli tra di voi che entrano in servizio il giorno di sabato, starà di guardia alla casa del re;

And he commanded them, saying, This is the thing you shall do: a third of you who come in on the Sabbath shall keep watch of the king’s house,

6 u n terzo alla porta di Sur e un terzo alla porta dietro le guardie. Voi farete la guardia alla casa, impedendone l'ingresso.

A third shall be at the gate Sur, and a third at the gate behind the guard. So you shall keep watch of the palace and be a barrier.

7 L e altre due parti di voi, tutti quelli cioè che escono di servizio il giorno di sabato, staranno di guardia alla casa dell'Eterno attorno al re.

And two divisions of all you who should go off duty on the Sabbath shall keep the watch of the house of the Lord to the king.

8 V oi vi metterete tutt'intorno al re, ognuno con le sue armi in mano; e chiunque cercherà di penetrare tra le vostre file sia messo a morte. Voi rimarrete col re sia quando esce che quando entra».

You shall surround the king, every man with his weapons in his hand. And let anyone who breaks through the ranks be put to death. You be with the king when he goes out and when he comes in.

9 C osí i capi di centinaia fecero esattamente come il sacerdote Jehoiada aveva comandato. Ciascuno prese i suoi uomini, quelli che entravano in servizio il giorno di sabato e quelli che uscivano di servizio il giorno di sabato, e andarono dal sacerdote Jehoiada.

The captains over the hundreds did all that Jehoiada the priest commanded; and they took every man his men who were to come on duty on the Sabbath with those who should go off duty on the Sabbath, and came to Jehoiada the priest.

10 I l sacerdote diede ai capi di centinaia le lance e gli scudi che erano appartenuti al re Davide e che erano nella casa dell'Eterno.

To the captains over hundreds the priest gave the spears and shields that had been King David’s, which were in the house of the Lord.

11 L e guardie, ognuna con le sue armi in pugno, si disposero dal lato sud del tempio, fino al lato nord del tempio, vicino all'altare e vicino al tempio, tutt'intorno al re.

And the guards stood, every man with his weapons in his hand, from the right corner to the left corner of the temple area, along by the altar and the temple proper.

12 P oi Jehoiada condusse fuori il figlio del re, gli pose in testa il diadema e gli consegnò la legge. Lo proclamarono re e lo unsero; quindi batterono le mani e esclamarono: «Viva il re!».

And Jehoiada brought out the king’s son and put the crown on him and gave him the Testimony; and they proclaimed him king and anointed him, and they clapped their hands and said, Long live the king!

13 Q uando Athaliah udí il rumore delle guardie e del popolo, andò verso il popolo nella casa dell'Eterno.

When Athaliah heard the noise of the guards and the people, she went into the house of the Lord to the people.

14 G uardò e vide il re in piedi sul palco, secondo l'usanza; i capitani e trombettieri erano accanto al re, mentre tutto il popolo del paese era in festa e suonava le trombe. Allora Athaliah si stracciò le vesti e gridò: «Tradimento, tradimento!».

When she looked, there stood the king by the pillar, as was customary, and the captains and the trumpeters beside the king, with all the people of the land rejoicing and blowing trumpets. And Athaliah rent her clothes and cried, Treason! Treason!

15 M a il sacerdote Jehoiada ordinò ai capi di centinaia, che comandavano l'esercito, e disse loro: «Fatela uscire di mezzo alle file, e chiunque la segue sia ucciso di spada!». Il sacerdote infatti aveva detto: «Non permettete che sia uccisa nella casa dell'Eterno».

Then Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of hundreds set over the army and said to them, Take her forth outside the ranks, and him who follows her kill with the sword. For the priest had said, Let her not be slain in the house of the Lord.

16 C osí essi la afferrarono e, come ella giunse alla casa del re per la strada della porta dei cavalli, là fu uccisa.

They seized her, and she went through the horses’ entrance to the king’s house, and there she was slain.

17 P oi Jehoiada fece un patto tra l'Eterno, il re e il popolo, perché Israele fosse il popolo dell'Eterno; fece pure un patto fra il re e il popolo.

And Jehoiada made a covenant between the Lord, the king, and the people that they would be the Lord’s people—and also between the king and the people.

18 A llora tutto il popolo del paese andò al tempio di Baal e lo demolí; fece interamente a pezzi i suoi altari e le sue immagini e uccise davanti agli altari Mattan, sacerdote di Baal, Poi il sacerdote Jehoiada pose delle guardie intorno alla casa dell'Eterno.

Then all the people of the land went to the house of Baal and destroyed it. His altar and his images they broke completely in pieces, and Mattan the priest of Baal they slew before the altars. And the priest appointed watchmen to guard the house of the Lord.

19 Q uindi prese i capi di centinaia delle guardie del corpo e delle guardie e tutto il popolo del paese; essi fecero scendere il re dalla casa dell'Eterno e, seguendo la strada della porta delle guardie lo condussero alla casa del re, dove egli si sedette sul trono dei re.

Then he took the rulers over hundreds, the captains, the guard, and all the people of the land, and they brought the king down from the house of the Lord and came by way of the guards’ gate to the king’s house. And Joash was seated on the throne of the kings.

20 C osí il popolo del paese fu in festa e la città rimase tranquilla, perchè avevano ucciso con la spada Athaliah nella casa del re.

So all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet after Athaliah had been slain with the sword beside the king’s house.

21 J oas aveva sette anni quando iniziò a regnare.

Joash was seven years old when he began to reign.
