1 O h, fosse la mia testa una sorgente d'acqua e i miei occhi una fonte di lacrime, perché pianga giorno e notte gli uccisi della figlia del mio popolo!

Oh, that my head were waters and my eyes a reservoir of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!

2 O h, avessi nel deserto un rifugio per viandanti! Abbandonerei il mio popolo e me ne andrei lontano da loro, perché sono tutti adulteri, un assembramento di traditori.

Oh, that I had in the wilderness a lodging place (a mere shelter) for wayfaring men, that I might leave my people and go away from them! For they are all adulterers; they are a gang of treacherous men.

3 « Tendono le loro lingue come fosse il loro arco per scoccare menzogne; nel paese sono potenti ma non per la verità, perché procedono di malvagità in malvagità e non conoscono me», dice l'Eterno.

And they bend their tongue, their bow for the lies. And not according to faithfulness do they rule and become strong in the land; for they proceed from evil to evil, and they do not know and understand and acknowledge Me, says the Lord.

4 « Si guardi ciascuno dal suo vicino e non fidatevi di ogni fratello, perché ogni fratello non fa che ingannare ed ogni vicino va spargendo calunnie.

Let everyone beware of his neighbor and put no trust in any brother. For every brother is an utter and complete supplanter (one who takes by the heel and trips up, a deceiver, a Jacob), and every neighbor goes about as a slanderer.

5 O gnuno inganna il suo vicino e non dicono la verità; esercitano la loro lingua a mentire e si affaticano a fare il male.

And they deceive and mock every one his neighbor and do not speak the truth. They have taught their tongues to speak lies; they weary themselves committing iniquity.

6 L a tua dimora è in mezzo all'inganno e per inganno rifiutano di conoscermi», dice l'Eterno.

Your habitation is in the midst of deceit; through deceit they refuse to know and understand Me, says the Lord.

7 P erciò cosí dice l'Eterno degli eserciti: «Ecco, io li raffinerò e li saggerò. Cos'altro infatti posso fare per la figlia del mio popolo?

Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts: Behold, I will melt them and test them, for how else should I deal with the daughter of My people?

8 L a loro lingua è una freccia micidiale; essa non dice che menzogne. Con la bocca ognuno parla di pace al suo vicino, ma nel suo cuore sta in agguato.

Their tongue is a murderous arrow; it speaks deceitfully; one speaks peaceably to his neighbor with his mouth, but in his heart he lays snares and waits in ambush for him.

9 N on dovrei forse punirli per queste cose?», dice l'Eterno. «Non dovrei vendicarmi di una nazione come questa?».

Shall I not punish them for these things? says the Lord. Shall I not avenge Myself on such a nation as this?

10 P er i monti eleverò pianto e gemito e per i pascoli del deserto un lamento, perché sono bruciati e non vi passa piú alcuno, né piú si ode il belare delle greggi. Gli uccelli del cielo e le bestie sono fuggiti, sono scomparsi.

For the mountains I will take up a weeping and wailing and for the pastures of the wilderness a lament, because they are burned up and desolated, so that no one passes through; neither can men hear the lowing of cattle. Both the fowls of the air and the beasts have fled, they are gone!

11 « Io ridurrò Gerusalemme un cumulo di rovine e un rifugio di sciacalli, farò delle città di Giuda una desolazione senza abitanti».

I will make Jerusalem heaps, a dwelling place of jackals; and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation, without inhabitant.

12 Q ual'è l'uomo saggio che può comprendere queste cose e colui al quale la bocca dell'Eterno ha parlato perché lo annunzi? Perché mai il paese è distrutto e desolato come un deserto e non vi passa piú nessuno?

Who is the wise man who may understand this? To whom has the mouth of the Lord spoken, that he may declare it? Why is the land ruined and laid waste like a wilderness, so that no one passes through it?

13 L 'Eterno dice: «Perché costoro hanno abbandonato la mia legge che avevo posto davanti a loro, non hanno ascoltato la mia voce e non hanno camminato in conformità ad essa,

And the Lord says, Because they have forsaken My law, which I set before them, and have not listened to and obeyed My voice or walked in accordance with it

14 m a hanno seguito la caparbietà del loro cuore e i Baal, che i loro padri avevano fatto loro conoscere».

But have walked stubbornly after their own hearts and after the Baals, as their fathers taught them,

15 P erciò cosí dice l'Eterno degli eserciti, il DIO d'Israele: «Ecco, io nutrirò questo popolo di assenzio e gli farò bere acqua avvelenata.

Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will feed them, even this people, with wormwood and give them bitter and poisonous water to drink.

16 L i disperderò fra le nazioni che né loro né i loro padri hanno conosciuto, e manderò dietro a loro la spada, finché li avrò interamente distrutti».

I will scatter them also among nations that neither they nor their fathers have known, and I will send the sword among them and after them until I have consumed them.

17 C osí dice l'Eterno degli eserciti: «Pensate a chiamare le lamentatrici: che vengano! Mandate a chiamare le piú brave: che vengano!

Thus says the Lord of hosts: Consider and call for the mourning women to come; send for the skillful women to come.

18 S i affrettino a elevare su di noi un lamento affinché i nostri occhi si sciolgano in lacrime e le nostre palpebre versino acqua».

Let them make haste and raise a wailing over us and for us, that our eyes may run down with tears and our eyelids gush with water.

19 P oiché una voce di lamento si ode da Sion: «Come siamo devastati! Siamo grandemente confusi, perché dobbiamo lasciare il paese, perché hanno abbattuto le nostre dimore».

For a sound of wailing is heard out of Zion: How we are plundered and ruined! We are greatly confounded and utterly put to shame, because we have forsaken the land, because they have cast down our dwellings.

20 P erciò ascoltate la parola dell'Eterno, o donne, e il vostro orecchio riceva la parola della sua bocca. Insegnate alle vostre figlie un lamento e ognuna insegni alla sua vicina un canto funebre.

Yet hear the word of the Lord, O you women, and let your ears receive the word of His mouth; teach your daughters a lament, and each one her neighbor a dirge.

21 P oiché la morte è salita per le nostre finestre, è entrata nei nostri palazzi per far sparire i bambini dalla strada e i giovani dalle piazze.

For death has come up into our windows; it has entered into our palaces, cutting off the children from outdoors and the young men from the streets.

22 « Parla: Cosí dice l'Eterno: "I cadaveri degli uomini giaceranno come letame sull'aperta campagna, come un covone lasciato indietro dal mietitore e che nessuno raccoglie"».

Speak, Thus says the Lord: The dead bodies of men shall fall like dung on the open field and like sheaves behind the reaper, and none shall gather them.

23 C osí dice l'Eterno: «Il savio non si glori della sua sapienza, il forte non si glori della sua forza, il ricco non si glori della sua ricchezza.

Thus says the Lord: Let not the wise and skillful person glory and boast in his wisdom and skill; let not the mighty and powerful person glory and boast in his strength and power; let not the person who is rich glory and boast in his riches;

24 M a chi si gloria si glori di questo: di aver senno e di conoscere me, che sono l'Eterno, che esercita la benignità, il diritto e la giustizia sulla terra; poiché mi compiaccio in queste cose», dice l'Eterno.

But let him who glories glory in this: that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord, Who practices loving-kindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth, for in these things I delight, says the Lord.

25 « Ecco, vengono i giorni», dice l'Eterno, «in cui punirò tutti i circoncisi, che sono incirconcisi:

Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will punish all who though circumcised are still uncircumcised —

26 l 'Egitto, Giuda, Edom, i figli di Ammon, Moab, e tutti quelli che si tagliano gli angoli della barba e abitano nel deserto; poiché tutte le nazioni sono incirconcise e tutta la casa d'Israele è incirconcisa di cuore».

Egypt, Judah, Edom, the children of Ammon, Moab, and all who live in the desert and who clip off the corners of their hair and beards; for all these nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel is uncircumcised in heart.
