1 D opo queste cose, Gesú se ne andò all'altra riva del mare di Galilea, cioè di Tiberiade.

After this, Jesus went to the farther side of the Sea of Galilee—that is, the Sea of Tiberias.

2 E una grande folla lo seguiva, perché vedevano i segni che egli faceva sugli infermi.

And a great crowd was following Him because they had seen the signs (miracles) which He performed upon those who were sick.

3 M a Gesú salí sul monte e là si sedette con i suoi discepoli.

And Jesus walked up the mountainside and sat down there with His disciples.

4 O r la Pasqua, la festa dei Giudei, era vicina.

Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was approaching.

5 G esú dunque, alzati gli occhi e vedendo che una grande folla veniva da lui, disse a Filippo: «Dove compreremo del pane perché costoro possano mangiare?».

Jesus looked up then, and seeing that a vast multitude was coming toward Him, He said to Philip, Where are we to buy bread, so that all these people may eat?

6 O r diceva questo per metterlo alla prova, perché egli sapeva quello che stava per fare.

But He said this to prove (test) him, for He well knew what He was about to do.

7 F ilippo gli rispose: «Duecento denari di pane non basterebbero per loro, perché ognuno di loro possa avere un pezzetto».

Philip answered Him, Two hundred pennies’ (forty dollars) worth of bread is not enough that everyone may receive even a little.

8 A ndrea, fratello di Simon Pietro, uno dei suoi discepoli, gli disse:

Another of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him,

9 « V'è qui un ragazzo che ha cinque pani d'orzo e due piccoli pesci; ma che cos'è questo per tanta gente?».

There is a little boy here, who has five barley loaves, and two small fish; but what are they among so many people?

10 E Gesú disse: «Fate sedere la gente!». Or c'era molta erba in quel luogo. La gente dunque si sedette ed erano in numero di circa cinquemila.

Jesus said, Make all the people recline (sit down). Now the ground (a pasture) was covered with thick grass at the spot, so the men threw themselves down, about 5, 000 in number.

11 P oi Gesú prese i pani e, dopo aver reso grazie li distribuí ai discepoli, e i discepoli alla gente seduta; lo stesso fece dei pesci, finché ne vollero.

Jesus took the loaves, and when He had given thanks, He distributed to the disciples and the disciples to the reclining people; so also with the fish, as much as they wanted.

12 E , dopo che furono saziati, Gesú disse ai suoi discepoli: «Raccogliete i pezzi avanzati perche niente si perda».

When they had all had enough, He said to His disciples, Gather up now the fragments (the broken pieces that are left over), so that nothing may be lost and wasted.

13 E ssi dunque li raccolsero e riempirono dodici cesti con i pezzi di quei cinque pani d'orzo avanzati a coloro che avevano mangiato.

So accordingly they gathered them up, and they filled twelve '> small hand] baskets with fragments left over by those who had eaten from the five barley loaves.

14 A llora la gente, avendo visto il segno che Gesú aveva fatto, disse: «Certamente costui è il profeta, che deve venire nel mondo».

When the people saw the sign (miracle) that Jesus had performed, they began saying, Surely and beyond a doubt this is the Prophet Who is to come into the world!

15 M a Gesú, sapendo che stavano per venire a prenderlo per farlo re, si ritirò di nuovo sul monte, tutto solo.

Then Jesus, knowing that they meant to come and seize Him that they might make Him king, withdrew again to the hillside by Himself alone.

16 Q uando fu sera, i suoi discepoli discesero al mare.

When evening came, His disciples went down to the sea,

17 E , montati in barca, si diressero all'altra riva del mare, verso Capernaum; era ormai buio e Gesú non era ancora venuto da loro.

And they took a boat and were going across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and still Jesus had not come back to them.

18 I l mare era agitato, perché soffiava un forte vento.

Meanwhile, the sea was getting rough and rising high because of a great and violent wind that was blowing.

19 O ra, dopo aver remato circa venticinque o trenta stadi, videro Gesú che camminava sul mare e si accostava alla barca, ed ebbero paura.

when they had rowed three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and approaching the boat. And they were afraid (terrified).

20 M a egli disse loro: «Sono io, non temete!».

But Jesus said to them, It is I; be not afraid!

21 E ssi dunque volentieri lo ricevettero nella barca, e subito la barca approdò là dove essi erano diretti.

Then they were quite willing and glad for Him to come into the boat. And now the boat went at once to the land they had steered toward.

22 I l giorno seguente la folla, che era rimasta sull'altra riva del mare, si rese conto che là non c'era che una piccola barca, quella in cui erano saliti i discepoli di Gesú, e che egli non vi era salito con loro, ma che i suoi discepoli erano partiti soli;

The next day the crowd standing on the other side of the sea realized that there had been only one small boat there, and that Jesus had not gone into it with His disciples, but that His disciples had gone away by themselves.

23 o r altre barche erano venute da Tiberiade, vicino al luogo dove avevano mangiato il pane dopo che il Signore aveva reso grazie.

But now some other boats from Tiberias had come in near the place where they ate the bread after the Lord had given thanks.

24 L a folla, come vide che Gesú non era piú là e neppure i suoi discepoli, salí anch'essa su quelle barche e venne a Capernaum, alla ricerca di Gesú.

So the people, finding that neither Jesus nor His disciples were there, themselves got into the small boats and came to Capernaum looking for Jesus.

25 A vendolo trovato di là dal mare, gli dissero: «Maestro, quando sei venuto qui?».

And when they found Him on the other side of the lake, they said to Him, Rabbi! When did You come here?

26 G esú rispose loro e disse: «In verità, in verità vi dico che voi mi cercate non perché avete visto segni, ma perché avete mangiato dei pani e siete stati saziati.

Jesus answered them, I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, you have been searching for Me, not because you saw the miracles and signs but because you were fed with the loaves and were filled and satisfied.

27 A doperatevi non per il cibo che perisce, ma per il cibo che dura in vita eterna, che il Figlio dell'uomo vi darà, perché su di lui il Padre, cioè Dio, ha posto il suo sigillo».

Stop toiling and doing and producing for the food that perishes and decomposes, but strive and work and produce rather for the food which endures unto life eternal; the Son of Man will give (furnish) you that, for God the Father has authorized and certified Him and put His seal of endorsement upon Him.

28 G li chiesero allora: «Che cosa dobbiamo fare per compiere le opere di Dio?».

They then said, What are we to do, that we may be working the works of God?

29 G esú rispose e disse loro: «Questa è l'opera di Dio: che crediate in colui che egli ha mandato».

Jesus replied, This is the work (service) that God asks of you: that you believe in the One Whom He has sent.

30 A llora essi gli dissero: «Quale segno fai tu dunque, affinché lo vediamo e ti crediamo? Che opera compi?

Therefore they said to Him, What sign (miracle, wonderwork) will You perform then, so that we may see it and believe and rely on and adhere to You? What work have You ?

31 I nostri padri mangiarono la manna nel deserto, come è scritto: "Egli diede loro da mangiare del pane venuto dal cielo"».

Our forefathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as the Scripture says, He gave them bread out of heaven to eat.

32 A llora Gesú disse loro: «In verità, in verità vi dico che non Mosé vi ha dato il pane che viene dal cielo, ma il Padre mio vi dà il vero pane che viene dal cielo.

Jesus then said to them, I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, Moses did not give you the Bread from heaven, but it is My Father Who gives you the true heavenly Bread.

33 P erché il pane di Dio è quello che discende dal cielo e dà vita al mondo».

For the Bread of God is He Who comes down out of heaven and gives life to the world.

34 E ssi allora gli dissero: «Signore, dacci sempre questo pane».

Then they said to Him, Lord, give us this bread always (all the time)!

35 E Gesú disse loro: «Io sono il pane della vita chi viene a me non avrà mai piú fame e chi crede in me non avrà mai piú sete

Jesus replied, I am the Bread of Life. He who comes to Me will never be hungry, and he who believes in and cleaves to and trusts in and relies on Me will never thirst any more (at any time).

36 M a io ve l'ho detto: voi mi avete visto, ma non credete.

But I told you, although you have seen Me, still you do not believe and trust and have faith.

37 T utto quello che il Padre mi dà verrà a me; e colui che viene a me, io non lo caccerò fuori,

All whom My Father gives (entrusts) to Me will come to Me; and the one who comes to Me I will most certainly not cast out.

38 p erché io sono disceso dal cielo, non per fare la mia volontà, ma la volontà di colui che mi ha mandato.

For I have come down from heaven not to do My own will and purpose but to do the will and purpose of Him Who sent Me.

39 E ' questa la volontà del Padre che mi ha mandato: che io non perda niente di tutto quello che egli mi ha dato, ma che lo risusciti nell'ultimo giorno.

And this is the will of Him Who sent Me, that I should not lose any of all that He has given Me, but that I should give new life and raise up at the last day.

40 Q uesta infatti è la volontà di colui che mi ha mandato: che chiunque viene alla conoscenza del Figlio e crede in lui, abbia vita eterna, e io lo risusciterò nell'ultimo giorno».

For this is My Father’s will and His purpose, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in and cleaves to and trusts in and relies on Him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.

41 I Giudei dunque mormoravano di lui, perché aveva detto: «Io sono il pane che è disceso dal cielo»,

Now the Jews murmured and found fault with and grumbled about Jesus because He said, I am the Bread that came down from heaven.

42 e dicevano: «Non è costui Gesú, il figlio di Giuseppe, di cui conosciamo il padre e la madre? Come può egli dire: Io sono disceso dal cielo"?».

They kept asking, Is not this Jesus, the Son of Joseph, Whose father and mother we know? How then can He say, I have come down from heaven?

43 A llora Gesú rispose e disse loro: «Non mormorate fra di voi.

So Jesus answered them, Stop grumbling and saying things against Me to one another.

44 N essuno può venire a me, se il Padre che mi ha mandato non lo attira, e io lo risusciterò nell'ultimo giorno.

No one is able to come to Me unless the Father Who sent Me attracts and draws him and gives him the desire to come to Me, and I will raise him up at the last day.

45 S ta scritto nei profeti: "E tutti saranno ammaestrati da Dio". Ogni uomo dunque che ha udito e imparato dal Padre, viene a me.

It is written in the Prophets, And they shall all be taught of God. Everyone who has listened to and learned from the Father comes to Me—

46 N on che alcuno abbia visto il Padre, se non colui che è da Dio, questi ha visto il Padre.

Which does not imply that anyone has seen the Father except He Who comes from God; He has seen the Father.

47 I n verità, in verità vi dico: Chi crede in me ha vita eterna.

I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, he who believes in Me has (now possesses) eternal life.

48 I o sono il pane della vita.

I am the Bread of Life.

49 I vostri padri mangiarono la manna nel deserto e morirono.

Your forefathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.

50 Q uesto è il pane che discende dal cielo affinché uno ne mangi e non muoia,

this is the Bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and never die.

51 I o sono il pane vivente che è disceso dal Cielo; se uno mangia di questo pane vivrà in eterno; or il pane che darò è la mia carne, che darò per la vita del mondo».

I am this Living Bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this Bread, he will live forever; and also the Bread that I shall give for the life of the world is My flesh (body).

52 A llora i Giudei si misero a discutere tra di loro, dicendo: «Come può costui darci da mangiare la sua carne?».

Then the Jews angrily contended with one another, saying, How is He able to give us His flesh to eat?

53 P erciò Gesú disse loro: «In verità, in verità vi dico che se non mangiate la carne del Figlio dell'uomo e non bevete il suo sangue, non avete la vita in voi.

And Jesus said to them, I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, you cannot have any life in you unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood.

54 C hi mangia la mia carne e beve il mio sangue, ha vita eterna, e io lo risusciterò nell'ultimo giorno.

He who feeds on My flesh and drinks My blood has (possesses now) eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.

55 P oiché la mia carne è veramente cibo e il mio sangue è veramente bevanda.

For My flesh is true and genuine food, and My blood is true and genuine drink.

56 C hi mangia la mia carne e beve il mio sangue, dimora in me ed io in lui.

He who feeds on My flesh and drinks My blood dwells continually in Me, and I in him.

57 C ome il Padre vivente mi ha mandato ed io vivo a motivo del Padre, cosí chi si ciba di me vivrà anch'egli a motivo di me.

Just as the living Father sent Me and I live by (through, because of) the Father, even so whoever continues to feed on Me shall live through and because of Me.

58 Q uesto è il pane che è disceso dal cielo; non è come la manna che mangiarono i vostri padri e morirono; chi si ciba di questo pane vivrà in eterno».

This is the Bread that came down from heaven. It is not like the manna which our forefathers ate, and yet died; he who takes this Bread for his food shall live forever.

59 Q ueste cose disse nella sinagoga, insegnando a Capernaum.

He said these things in a synagogue while He was teaching at Capernaum.

60 U dito questo, molti dei suoi discepoli dissero: «Questo parlare è duro, chi lo può capire?».

When His disciples heard this, many of them said, This is a hard and difficult and strange saying (an offensive and unbearable message). Who can stand to hear it?

61 M a Gesú, conoscendo in se stesso che i suoi discepoli mormoravano di questo, disse loro: «Questo vi scandalizza?

But Jesus, knowing within Himself that His disciples were complaining and protesting and grumbling about it, said to them: Is this a stumbling block and an offense to you?

62 C he sarebbe dunque se doveste vedere il Figlio dell'uomo salire dove era prima?

What then if you should see the Son of Man ascending to where He was before?

63 E lo Spirito che vivifica, la carne non giova a nulla; le parole che vi dico sono spirito e vita.

It is the Spirit Who gives life; the flesh conveys no benefit whatever. The words (truths) that I have been speaking to you are spirit and life.

64 M a vi sono alcuni tra voi che non credono», Gesú infatti sapeva fin dal principio chi erano coloro che non credevano, e chi era colui che lo avrebbe tradito;

But some of you fail to believe and trust and have faith. For Jesus knew from the first who did not believe and had no faith and who would betray Him and be false to Him.

65 e diceva: «Per questo vi ho detto che nessuno può venire a me se non gli è dato dal Padre mio».

And He said, This is why I told you that no one can come to Me unless it is granted him by the Father.

66 D a quel momento molti dei suoi discepoli si tirarono indietro e non andavano più con lui

After this, many of His disciples drew back (returned to their old associations) and no longer accompanied Him.

67 A llora Gesú disse ai dodici: «Volete andarvene anche voi?».

Jesus said to the Twelve, Will you also go away?

68 E Simon Pietro gli rispose: «Signore, da chi ce ne andremo? Tu hai parole di vita eterna.

Simon Peter answered, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words (the message) of eternal life.

69 E noi abbiamo creduto e abbiamo conosciuto che tu sei il Cristo, il Figlio del Dio vivente».

And we have learned to believe and trust, and we have come to know that You are the Holy One of God, the Christ (the Anointed One), the Son of the living God.

70 G esú rispose loro: «Non ho io scelto voi dodici? Eppure uno di voi è un diavolo».

Jesus answered them, Did I not choose you, the Twelve? And one of you is a devil (of the evil one and a false accuser).

71 O r egli alludeva a Giuda Iscariota, figlio di Simone, perché egli stava per tradirlo, quantunque fosse uno dei dodici.

He was speaking of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, for he was about to betray Him, he was one of the Twelve.
