1 « Ecco il mio servo, che io sostengo, il mio eletto in cui la mia anima si compiace. Ho posto il mio Spirito su di lui; egli porterà la giustizia alle nazioni.

Behold my Servant, Whom I uphold, My elect in Whom My soul delights! I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice and right and reveal truth to the nations.

2 N on griderà, non alzerà la voce, non farà udire la sua voce per le strade.

He will not cry or shout aloud or cause His voice to be heard in the street.

3 N on spezzerà la canna rotta e non spegnerà il lucignolo fumante; presenterà la giustizia secondo verità.

A bruised reed He will not break, and a dimly burning wick He will not quench; He will bring forth justice in truth.

4 E gli non verrà meno e non si scoraggerà, finché non avrà stabilito la giustizia sulla terra; e le isole aspetteranno la sua legge».

He will not fail or become weak or be crushed and discouraged till He has established justice in the earth; and the islands and coastal regions shall wait hopefully for Him and expect His direction and law.

5 C osí dice Dio, l'Eterno, che ha creato i cieli e li ha spiegati, che ha disteso la terra e le cose che essa produce, che dà il respiro al popolo che è su di essa e la vita a quelli che in essa camminano:

Thus says God the Lord—He Who created the heavens and stretched them forth, He Who spread abroad the earth and that which comes out of it, He Who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk in it:

6 « Io, l'Eterno, ti ho chiamato secondo giustizia e ti prenderò per mano, ti custodirò e ti farò l'alleanza del popolo e la luce delle nazioni,

I the Lord have called You for a righteous purpose and in righteousness; I will take You by the hand and will keep You; I will give You for a covenant to the people, for a light to the nations,

7 p er aprire gli occhi dei ciechi, per fare uscire dal carcere i prigionieri e dalla prigione quelli che giacciono nelle tenebre.

To open the eyes of the blind, to bring out prisoners from the dungeon, and those who sit in darkness from the prison.

8 I o sono l'Eterno, questo è il mio nome; non darò la mia gloria ad alcun altro né la mia lode alle immagini scolpite.

I am the Lord; that is My name! And My glory I will not give to another, nor My praise to graven images.

9 E cco, le cose di prima sono avvenute e ora vi annuncio cose nuove; io ve le faccio conoscere prima che germoglino».

Behold, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth I tell you of them.

10 C antate all'Eterno un cantico nuovo, la sua lode dalle estremità della terra, o voi che scendete in mare, e ciò che esso contiene, le isole e i loro abitanti.

Sing to the Lord a new song, and His praise from the end of the earth! You who go down to the sea, and all that is in it, the islands and coastal regions and the inhabitants of them!

11 I l deserto e le sue città elevino la loro voce, insieme ai villaggi in cui abitano quelli di Kedar. Esultino gli abitanti di Sela, mandino grida dalla cima dei monti.

Let the wilderness and its cities lift up their voices, the villages that Kedar inhabits. Let the inhabitants of the rock sing; let them shout from the tops of the mountains!

12 D iano gloria all'Eterno, proclamino la sua lode nelle isole.

Let them give glory to the Lord and declare His praise in the islands and coastal regions.

13 L 'Eterno avanzerà come un eroe, ecciterà il suo ardore come un guerriero; manderà un grido, sí, un grido lacerante trionferà sui suoi nemici.

The Lord will go forth like a mighty man, He will rouse up His zealous indignation and vengeance like a warrior; He will cry, yes, He will shout aloud, He will do mightily against His enemies.

14 « Per lungo tempo sono stato in silenzio, ho taciuto, mi sono contenuto; ma ora griderò come una donna che ha le doglie di parto, respirerò affannosamente e sbufferò insieme.

I have for a long time held My peace, I have been still and restrained Myself. Now I will cry out like a woman in travail, I will gasp and pant together.

15 D evasterò monti e colli e farò seccare tutte le piante verdi; ridurrò i fiumi in isole e asciugherò gli stagni.

I will lay waste the mountains and hills and dry up all their herbage; I will turn the rivers into islands, and I will dry up the pools.

16 F arò camminare i ciechi per una via che non conoscevano e li condurrò per sentieri sconosciuti; cambierò davanti a loro le tenebre in luce e i luoghi tortuosi in pianura. Queste cose farò per loro e non li abbandonerò.

And I will bring the blind by a way that they know not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known. I will make darkness into light before them and make uneven places into a plain. These things I have determined to do; and I will not leave them forsaken.

17 V olgeranno le spalle pieni di vergogna quelli che confidano nelle immagini scolpite e dicono alle immagini fuse: "Voi siete i nostri dèi!"

They shall be turned back, they shall be utterly put to shame, who trust in graven images, who say to molten images, You are our gods.

18 S ordi, ascoltate; ciechi, guardate e vedete!

Hear, you deaf! And look, you blind, that you may see!

19 C hi è cieco, se non il mio servo, o sordo come il mio messaggero che invio? Chi è cieco come colui che è in pace con me, cieco come il servo dell'Eterno?

Who is blind but My servant ? Or deaf like My messenger whom I send? Who is blind like the one who is at peace with Me ? Yes, who is blind like the Lord’s servant?

20 H ai visto molte cose, ma senza prestarvi attenzione; le tue orecchie erano aperte, ma non hai udito nulla».

You have seen many things, but you do not observe or apprehend their true meaning. His ears are open, but he hears not!

21 L 'Eterno si è compiaciuto per amore della sua giustizia; renderà la sua legge grande e magnifica.

It was the Lord’s pleasure for His righteousness’ sake to magnify instruction and revelation and glorify them.

22 M a questo è un popolo derubato e spogliato; sono tutti presi nei lacci in prigioni sotterranee e rinchiusi in carceri. Sono abbandonati al saccheggio, ma nessuno li ha liberati; spogliati, ma nessuno ha detto: «Restituisci!».

But this is a people robbed and plundered; they are all of them snared in holes and hidden in houses of bondage. They have become a prey, with no one to deliver them, a spoil, with no one to say, Restore them!

23 C hi di voi presterà orecchio a questo? Chi farà attenzione e ascolterà in avvenire?

Who is there among you who will give ear to this? Who will listen and hear in the time to come?

24 C hi ha abbandonato Giacobbe al saccheggio e Israele, ai predoni? Non è forse stato l'Eterno, contro il quale abbiamo peccato? Essi infatti non hanno voluto camminare nelle sue vie e non hanno ubbidito alla sua legge.

Who gave up Jacob for spoil, and Israel to the robbers? Was it not the Lord, He against Whom we have sinned and in Whose ways they would not walk, neither were they obedient to His law or His teaching?

25 P erciò egli ha riversato su di lui l'ardore della sua ira e la violenza della guerra, che lo ha avvolto nelle fiamme tutt'intorno senza che se ne rendesse conto; l'ha consumato, ma egli non ha preso la cosa a cuore.

Therefore He poured out upon the fierceness of His anger and the strength of battle. And it set him on fire round about, yet he knew not; it burned him, but he did not lay it to heart.
