1 I Proverbi di Salomone, figlio di Davide, re d'Israele,

The proverbs (truths obscurely expressed, maxims, and parables) of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

2 p er conoscere sapienza e ammaestramento per intendere i detti di senno;

That people may know skillful and godly Wisdom and instruction, discern and comprehend the words of understanding and insight,

3 p er ricevere ammaestramento circa l'agire saggiamente, la giustizia, il giudizio e la dirittura

Receive instruction in wise dealing and the discipline of wise thoughtfulness, righteousness, justice, and integrity,

4 p er dare accorgimento ai semplici, conoscenza e riflessione al giovane.

That prudence may be given to the simple, and knowledge, discretion, and discernment to the youth—

5 I l savio ascolterà e accrescerà il suo sapere; l'uomo con intendimento ne otterrà saggi consigli,

The wise also will hear and increase in learning, and the person of understanding will acquire skill and attain to sound counsel —

6 p er comprendere una sentenza e un enigma, le parole dei savi e i loro detti oscuri

That people may understand a proverb and a figure of speech or an enigma with its interpretation, and the words of the wise and their dark sayings or riddles.

7 I l timore dell'Eterno è il principio della conoscenza, ma gli stolti disprezzano la sapienza e l'ammaestramento.

The reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord is the beginning and the principal and choice part of knowledge; but fools despise skillful and godly Wisdom, instruction, and discipline.

8 A scolta, figlio mio, l'ammaestramento di tuo padre e non trascurare l'insegnamento di tua madre,

My son, hear the instruction of your father; reject not nor forsake the teaching of your mother.

9 p erché saranno un fregio di grazia al tuo capo e monili al tuo collo.

For they are a chaplet (garland) of grace upon your head and chains and pendants for your neck.

10 F iglio mio, se i peccatori ti vogliono sedurre, non acconsentire.

My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent.

11 S e dicono: «Vieni con noi; stiamo in agguato per spargere sangue, tendiamo insidie senza motivo all'innocente,

If they say, Come with us; let us lie in wait blood, let us ambush the innocent without cause;

12 i nghiottiamoli vivi, come lo Sceol tutt'interi come quelli che scendono nella fossa;

Let us swallow them up alive as does Sheol (the place of the dead), and whole, as those who go down into the pit;

13 n oi troveremo ogni sorta di beni preziosi, riempiremo le nostre case di bottino;

We shall find and take all kinds of precious goods, we shall fill our houses with plunder;

14 t u trarrai a sorte la tua parte con noi, e fra noi tutti ci sarà una sola borsa»

Throw in your lot with us and be a sworn brother and comrade; let us all have one purse in common—

15 f iglio mio, non incamminarti con loro, trattieni il tuo piede dal loro sentiero,

My son, do not walk in the way with them; restrain your foot from their path;

16 p erché i loro piedi corrono al male e si affrettano a versare sangue.

For their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood.

17 S i tende invano la rete davanti a ogni sorta di uccelli;

For in vain is the net spread in the sight of any bird!

18 m a costoro pongono agguati al loro proprio sangue e tendono insidie alla loro stessa vita.

But they are lying in wait for their own blood; they set an ambush for their own lives.

19 T ali sono le vie di ogni uomo avido di guadagno; esso toglie la vita del suo proprietario.

So are the ways of everyone who is greedy of gain; such takes away the lives of its possessors.

20 L a sapienza grida per le vie, fa sentire la sua voce per le piazze;

Wisdom cries aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the markets;

21 e ssa chiama nei luoghi affollati e pronuncia i suoi discorsi all'ingresso delle porte in città:

She cries at the head of the noisy intersections; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks:

22 « Fino a quando, o semplici, amerete la semplicioneria, e gli schernitori prenderanno gusto a schernire e gli stolti avranno in odio la conoscenza?

How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? And the scoffers delight in scoffing and fools hate knowledge?

23 V olgetevi alla mia riprensione; ecco, io verserò il mio Spirito su di voi e vi farò conoscere le mie parole.

If you will turn (repent) and give heed to my reproof, behold, I '> Wisdom] will pour out my spirit upon you, I will make my words known to you.

24 P oiché ho chiamato e voi avete rifiutato, ho steso la mia mano e nessuno vi ha fatto attenzione,

Because I have called and you have refused, have stretched out my hand and no man has heeded it,

25 a nzi avete respinto ogni mio consiglio e non avete accettato la mia correzione,

And you treated as nothing all my counsel and would accept none of my reproof,

26 a nch'io riderò della vostra sventura, mi farò beffe quando verrà ciò che temete,

I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when the thing comes that shall cause you terror and panic—

27 q uando ciò che temete verrà come una tempesta, e la vostra sventura arriverà come un uragano, quando verranno su di voi l'avversità e l'angoscia.

When your panic comes as a storm and desolation and your calamity comes on as a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you.

28 A llora essi grideranno a me, ma io non risponderò, mi cercheranno con premura, ma non mi troveranno.

Then will they call upon me but I will not answer; they will seek me early and diligently but they will not find me.

29 P oiché hanno odiato la conoscenza e non hanno scelto il timore dell'Eterno,

Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord,

30 n on hanno voluto accettare il mio consiglio e hanno disprezzato ogni mia riprensione.

Would accept none of my counsel, and despised all my reproof,

31 P erciò si ciberanno del frutto della loro condotta e si sazieranno dei loro propri consigli.

Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way and be satiated with their own devices.

32 P oiché lo sviamento dei semplici li uccide e la falsa tranquillità degli stolti li fa perire;

For the backsliding of the simple shall slay them, and the careless ease of fools shall destroy them.

33 m a chi mi ascolta abiterà al sicuro, sarà veramente tranquillo, senza paura di alcun male».

But whoso hearkens to me shall dwell securely and in confident trust and shall be quiet, without fear or dread of evil.
