1 E stes são os provérbios de Salomão, filho de Davi, rei de Israel.

The proverbs (truths obscurely expressed, maxims, and parables) of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

2 E les ajudarão a experimentar a sabedoria e a disciplina; a compreender as palavras que dão entendimento;

That people may know skillful and godly Wisdom and instruction, discern and comprehend the words of understanding and insight,

3 a viver com disciplina e sensatez, fazendo o que é justo, direito e correto;

Receive instruction in wise dealing and the discipline of wise thoughtfulness, righteousness, justice, and integrity,

4 a judarão a dar prudência aos inexperientes e conhecimento e bom senso aos jovens.

That prudence may be given to the simple, and knowledge, discretion, and discernment to the youth—

5 S e o sábio lhes der ouvidos, aumentará seu conhecimento, e quem tem discernimento obterá orientação

The wise also will hear and increase in learning, and the person of understanding will acquire skill and attain to sound counsel —

6 p ara compreender provérbios e parábolas, ditados e enigmas dos sábios.

That people may understand a proverb and a figure of speech or an enigma with its interpretation, and the words of the wise and their dark sayings or riddles.

7 O temor do Senhor é o princípio do conhecimento, mas os insensatos desprezam a sabedoria e a disciplina. Advertências da Sabedoria

The reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord is the beginning and the principal and choice part of knowledge; but fools despise skillful and godly Wisdom, instruction, and discipline.

8 O uça, meu filho, a instrução de seu pai e não despreze o ensino de sua mãe.

My son, hear the instruction of your father; reject not nor forsake the teaching of your mother.

9 E les serão um enfeite para a sua cabeça, um adorno para o seu pescoço.

For they are a chaplet (garland) of grace upon your head and chains and pendants for your neck.

10 M eu filho, se os maus tentarem seduzi-lo, não ceda!

My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent.

11 S e disserem: “Venha conosco; fiquemos de tocaia para matar alguém, vamos divertir-nos armando emboscada contra quem de nada suspeita!

If they say, Come with us; let us lie in wait blood, let us ambush the innocent without cause;

12 V amos engoli-los vivos, como a sepultura engole os mortos; vamos destruí-los inteiros, como são destruídos os que descem à cova;

Let us swallow them up alive as does Sheol (the place of the dead), and whole, as those who go down into the pit;

13 a charemos todo tipo de objetos valiosos e encheremos as nossas casas com o que roubarmos;

We shall find and take all kinds of precious goods, we shall fill our houses with plunder;

14 j unte-se ao nosso bando; dividiremos em partes iguais tudo o que conseguirmos!”

Throw in your lot with us and be a sworn brother and comrade; let us all have one purse in common—

15 M eu filho, não vá pela vereda dessa gente! Afaste os pés do caminho que eles seguem,

My son, do not walk in the way with them; restrain your foot from their path;

16 p ois os pés deles correm para fazer o mal, estão sempre prontos para derramar sangue.

For their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood.

17 A ssim como é inútil estender a rede se as aves o observam,

For in vain is the net spread in the sight of any bird!

18 t ambém esses homens não percebem que fazem tocaia contra a própria vida; armam emboscadas contra eles mesmos!

But they are lying in wait for their own blood; they set an ambush for their own lives.

19 T al é o caminho de todos os gananciosos; quem assim procede a si mesmo se destrói. Convite à Sabedoria

So are the ways of everyone who is greedy of gain; such takes away the lives of its possessors.

20 A sabedoria clama em alta voz nas ruas, ergue a voz nas praças públicas;

Wisdom cries aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the markets;

21 n as esquinas das ruas barulhentas ela clama, nas portas da cidade faz o seu discurso:

She cries at the head of the noisy intersections; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks:

22 “ Até quando vocês, inexperientes, irão contentar-se com a sua inexperiência? Vocês, zombadores, até quando terão prazer na zombaria? E vocês, tolos, até quando desprezarão o conhecimento?

How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? And the scoffers delight in scoffing and fools hate knowledge?

23 S e acatarem a minha repreensão, eu lhes darei um espírito de sabedoria e lhes revelarei os meus pensamentos.

If you will turn (repent) and give heed to my reproof, behold, I '> Wisdom] will pour out my spirit upon you, I will make my words known to you.

24 V ocês, porém, rejeitaram o meu convite; ninguém se importou quando estendi minha mão!

Because I have called and you have refused, have stretched out my hand and no man has heeded it,

25 V isto que desprezaram totalmente o meu conselho e não quiseram aceitar a minha repreensão,

And you treated as nothing all my counsel and would accept none of my reproof,

26 e u, de minha parte, vou rir-me da sua desgraça; zombarei quando o que temem se abater sobre vocês,

I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when the thing comes that shall cause you terror and panic—

27 q uando aquilo que temem abater-se sobre vocês como uma tempestade, quando a desgraça os atingir como um vendaval, quando a angústia e a dor os dominarem.

When your panic comes as a storm and desolation and your calamity comes on as a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you.

28 “ Então vocês me chamarão, mas não responderei; procurarão por mim, mas não me encontrarão.

Then will they call upon me but I will not answer; they will seek me early and diligently but they will not find me.

29 V isto que desprezaram o conhecimento e recusaram o temor do Senhor,

Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord,

30 n ão quiseram aceitar o meu conselho e fizeram pouco caso da minha advertência,

Would accept none of my counsel, and despised all my reproof,

31 c omerão do fruto da sua conduta e se fartarão de suas próprias maquinações.

Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way and be satiated with their own devices.

32 P ois a inconstância dos inexperientes os matará, e a falsa segurança dos tolos os destruirá;

For the backsliding of the simple shall slay them, and the careless ease of fools shall destroy them.

33 m as quem me ouvir viverá em segurança e estará tranqüilo, sem temer nenhum mal”.

But whoso hearkens to me shall dwell securely and in confident trust and shall be quiet, without fear or dread of evil.
