1 P rovérbios de Salomão, filho de Davi, rei de Israel:

The proverbs (truths obscurely expressed, maxims, and parables) of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

2 P ara se conhecer a sabedoria e a instrução; para se entenderem as palavras de inteligência;

That people may know skillful and godly Wisdom and instruction, discern and comprehend the words of understanding and insight,

3 p ara se instruir em sábio procedimento, em retidão, justiça e eqüidade;

Receive instruction in wise dealing and the discipline of wise thoughtfulness, righteousness, justice, and integrity,

4 p ara se dar aos simples prudência, e aos jovens conhecimento e bom siso.

That prudence may be given to the simple, and knowledge, discretion, and discernment to the youth—

5 O uça também, o sábio e cresça em ciência, e o entendido adquira habilidade,

The wise also will hear and increase in learning, and the person of understanding will acquire skill and attain to sound counsel —

6 p ara entender provérbios e parábolas, as palavras dos sábios, e seus enigmas.

That people may understand a proverb and a figure of speech or an enigma with its interpretation, and the words of the wise and their dark sayings or riddles.

7 O temor do Senhor é o princípio do conhecimento; mas os insensatos desprezam a sabedoria e a instrução.

The reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord is the beginning and the principal and choice part of knowledge; but fools despise skillful and godly Wisdom, instruction, and discipline.

8 F ilho meu, ouve a instrução de teu pai, e não deixes o ensino de tua mãe.

My son, hear the instruction of your father; reject not nor forsake the teaching of your mother.

9 P orque eles serão uma grinalda de graça para a tua cabeça, e colares para o teu pescoço.

For they are a chaplet (garland) of grace upon your head and chains and pendants for your neck.

10 F ilho meu, se os pecadores te quiserem seduzir, não consintas.

My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent.

11 S e disserem: Vem conosco; embosquemo-nos para derramar sangue; espreitemos sem razão o inocente;

If they say, Come with us; let us lie in wait blood, let us ambush the innocent without cause;

12 t raguemo-los vivos, como o Seol, e inteiros como os que descem ã cova;

Let us swallow them up alive as does Sheol (the place of the dead), and whole, as those who go down into the pit;

13 a charemos toda sorte de bens preciosos; encheremos as nossas casas de despojos;

We shall find and take all kinds of precious goods, we shall fill our houses with plunder;

14 l ançarás a tua sorte entre nós; teremos todos uma só bolsa;

Throw in your lot with us and be a sworn brother and comrade; let us all have one purse in common—

15 f ilho meu, não andes no caminho com eles; guarda da sua vereda o teu pé,

My son, do not walk in the way with them; restrain your foot from their path;

16 p orque os seus pés correm para o mal, e eles se apressam a derramar sangue.

For their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood.

17 P ois debalde se estende a rede ã vista de qualquer ave.

For in vain is the net spread in the sight of any bird!

18 M as estes se põem em emboscadas contra o seu próprio sangue, e as suas próprias vidas espreitam.

But they are lying in wait for their own blood; they set an ambush for their own lives.

19 T ais são as veredas de todo aquele que se entrega ã cobiça; ela tira a vida dos que a possuem.

So are the ways of everyone who is greedy of gain; such takes away the lives of its possessors.

20 A suprema sabedoria altissonantemente clama nas ruas; nas praças levanta a sua voz.

Wisdom cries aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the markets;

21 D o alto dos muros clama;

She cries at the head of the noisy intersections; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks:

22 A té quando, ó estúpidos, amareis a estupidez? e até quando se deleitarão no escárnio os escarnecedores, e odiarão os insensatos o conhecimento?

How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? And the scoffers delight in scoffing and fools hate knowledge?

23 C onvertei-vos pela minha repreensão; eis que derramarei sobre vós o meu; espírito e vos farei saber as minhas palavras.

If you will turn (repent) and give heed to my reproof, behold, I '> Wisdom] will pour out my spirit upon you, I will make my words known to you.

24 M as, porque clamei, e vós recusastes; porque estendi a minha mão, e nao houve quem desse atenção;

Because I have called and you have refused, have stretched out my hand and no man has heeded it,

25 a ntes desprezastes todo o meu conselho, e não fizestes caso da minha repreensão;

And you treated as nothing all my counsel and would accept none of my reproof,

26 t ambém eu me rirei no dia da vossa calamidade; zombarei, quando sobrevier o vosso terror,

I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when the thing comes that shall cause you terror and panic—

27 q uando o terror vos sobrevier como tempestade, e a vossa calamidade passar como redemoinho, e quando vos sobrevierem aperto e angústia.

When your panic comes as a storm and desolation and your calamity comes on as a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you.

28 E ntão a mim clamarão, mas eu não responderei; diligentemente me buscarão, mas não me acharão.

Then will they call upon me but I will not answer; they will seek me early and diligently but they will not find me.

29 P orquanto aborreceram o conhecimento, e não preferiram o temor do Senhor;

Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord,

30 n ão quiseram o meu conselho e desprezaram toda a minha repreensão;

Would accept none of my counsel, and despised all my reproof,

31 p ortanto comerão do fruto do seu caminho e se fartarão dos seus próprios conselhos.

Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way and be satiated with their own devices.

32 P orque o desvio dos néscios os matará, e a prosperidade dos loucos os destruirá.

For the backsliding of the simple shall slay them, and the careless ease of fools shall destroy them.

33 M as o que me der ouvidos habitará em segurança, e estará tranqüilo, sem receio do mal.

But whoso hearkens to me shall dwell securely and in confident trust and shall be quiet, without fear or dread of evil.
