1 O uvi esta palavra que levanto como lamentação sobre vós, ó casa de Israel.

Hear this word which I take up concerning you in lamentation, O house of Israel:

2 A virgem de Israel caiu; nunca mais tornará a levantar-se; desamparada jaz na sua terra; não há quem a levante.

The Virgin of Israel has fallen; she shall no more rise; she lies cast down and forsaken on her land; there is no one to raise her up.

3 P orque assim diz o Senhor Deus: A cidade da qual saem mil terá de resto cem, e aquela da qual saem cem terá dez para a casa de Israel.

For thus says the Lord God: The city that went forth a thousand shall have a hundred left, and that which went forth a hundred shall have ten left to the house of Israel.

4 P ois assim diz o Senhor ã casa de Israel: Buscai-me, e vivei.

For thus says the Lord to the house of Israel: Seek Me and you shall live!

5 M as não busqueis a Betel, nem entreis em Gilgal, nem passeis a Berseba; porque Gilgal certamente irá ao cativeiro, e Betel será desfeita em nada.

But seek not Bethel nor enter into Gilgal, and pass not over to Beersheba; for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity and exile, and Bethel shall become Beth-aven and come to nothing.

6 B uscai ao Senhor, e vivei; para que ele não irrompa na casa de José como fogo e a consuma, e não haja em Betel quem o apague.

Seek the Lord and you shall live, lest He rush down like fire upon the house of Joseph and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Bethel.

7 V ós que converteis o juízo em alosna, e deitais por terra a justiça,

You who turn justice into wormwood and cast righteousness (uprightness and right standing with God) down to the ground,

8 p rocurai aquele que fez as Plêiades e o Oriom, e torna a sombra da noite em manhã, e transforma o dia em noite; o que chama as águas do mar, e as derrama sobre a terra; o Senhor é o seu nome.

Seek Him Who made the Pleiades and Orion, Who turns the shadow of death or deep darkness into the morning and darkens the day into night, Who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out upon the face of the earth—the Lord is His name—

9 O que faz vir súbita destruição sobre o forte, de sorte que vem a ruína sobre a fortaleza.

Who causes sudden destruction to flash forth upon the strong so that destruction comes upon the fortress.

10 E les odeiam ao que na porta os repreende, e abominam ao que fala a verdade.

They hate him who reproves in the gate, and they abhor him who speaks uprightly.

11 P ortanto, visto que pisais o pobre, e dele exigis tributo de trigo, embora tenhais edificado casas de pedras lavradas, não habitareis nelas; e embora tenhais plantado vinhas desejáveis, não bebereis do seu vinho.

Therefore because you tread upon the poor and take from him exactions of wheat, you have built houses of hewn stone, but you shall not dwell in them; you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine.

12 P ois sei que são muitas as vossas transgressões, e graves os vossos pecados; afligis o justo, aceitais peitas, e na porta negais o direito aos necessitados.

For I know how manifold are your transgressions and how mighty are your sins—you who afflict the righteous, who take a bribe, and who turn aside the needy in the gate from their right.

13 P ortanto, o que for prudente guardará silêncio naquele tempo, porque o tempo será mau.

Therefore he who is prudent will keep silence in such a time, for it is an evil time.

14 B uscai o bem, e não o mal, para que vivais; e assim o Senhor, o Deus dos exércitos, estará convosco, como dizeis.

Seek (inquire for and require) good and not evil that you may live, and so the Lord, the God of hosts, will be with you, as you have said.

15 A borrecei o mal, e amai o bem, e estabelecei o juízo na porta. Talvez o Senhor, o Deus dos exércitos, tenha piedade do resto de José.

Hate the evil and love the good and establish justice in the gate. It may be that the Lord, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.

16 P ortanto, assim diz o Senhor Deus dos exércitos, o Senhor: Em todas as praças haverá pranto, e em todas as ruas dirão: Ai! ai! E ao lavrador chamarão para choro, e para pranto os que souberem prantear.

Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, the Lord: There shall be wailing in all the broad ways, and in all the streets they shall say, Alas! Alas! And they shall call the farmers to mourning and such as are skilled in lamentation to wailing.

17 E em todas as vinhas haverá pranto; porque passarei pelo meio de ti, diz o Senhor.

And in all vineyards there shall be wailing, for I will pass through the midst of you, says the Lord.

18 A i de vós que desejais o dia do Senhor! Para que quereis vós este dia do Senhor? Ele é trevas e não luz.

Woe to you who desire the day of the Lord! Why would you want the day of the Lord? It is darkness and not light;

19 E como se um homem fugisse de diante do leão, e se encontrasse com ele o urso; ou como se, entrando em casa, encostasse a mão ã parede, e o mordesse uma cobra.

It is as if a man fled from a lion and a bear met him, or went into the house and leaned with his hand against the wall and a serpent bit him.

20 N ão será, pois, o dia do Senhor trevas e não luz? não será completa escuridade, sem nenhum resplendor?

Shall not the day of the Lord be darkness, not light? Even very dark with no brightness in it?

21 A borreço, desprezo as vossas festas, e não me deleito nas vossas assembléias solenes.

I hate, I despise your feasts, and I will not smell a savor or take delight in your solemn assemblies.

22 A inda que me ofereçais holocaustos, juntamente com as vossas ofertas de cereais, não me agradarei deles; nem atentarei para as ofertas pacíficas de vossos animais cevados.

Though you offer Me your burnt offerings and your cereal offerings, I will not accept them, neither will I look upon the peace or thank offerings of your fatted beasts.

23 A fasta de mim o estrépito dos teus cânticos, porque não ouvirei as melodias das tuas liras.

Take away from Me the noise of your songs, for I will not listen to the melody of your harps.

24 C orra, porém, a justiça como as águas, e a retidão como o ribeiro perene.

But let justice run down like waters and righteousness as a mighty and ever-flowing stream.

25 O ferecestes-me vós sacrifícios e oblações no deserto por quarenta anos, ó casa de Israel?

Did you bring to Me sacrifices and cereal offerings during those forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?

26 S im, levastes Sicute, vosso rei, e Quium, vosso deus-estrela, imagens que fizestes para vos mesmos.

but you carried about the tent of your king Sakkuth and Kaiwan, your images of your star-god which you made for yourselves.

27 P ortanto vos levarei cativos para além de Damasco, diz o Senhor, cujo nome é o Deus dos exércitos.

Therefore I will cause you to go into exile beyond Damascus, says the Lord, whose name is the God of hosts.
