Surely I wish to speak to the Almighty, and I desire to argue and reason my case with God.

4 V ós, porém, sois forjadores de mentiras, e vós todos, médicos que não valem nada.

But you are forgers of lies; you are all physicians of no value and have no remedy to offer.

5 O xalá vos calásseis de todo, pois assim passaríeis por sábios.

Oh, that you would altogether hold your peace! Then you would evidence your wisdom and you might pass for wise men.

6 O uvi agora a minha defesa, e escutai os argumentos dos meus lábios.

Hear now my reasoning, and listen to the pleadings of my lips.

7 F alareis falsamente por Deus, e por ele proferireis mentiras?

Will you speak unrighteously for God and talk deceitfully for Him?

8 F areis aceitação da sua pessoa? Contendereis a favor de Deus?

Will you show partiality to Him ? Will you act as special pleaders for God?

9 S er-vos-ia bom, se ele vos esquadrinhasse? Ou zombareis dele, como quem zomba de um homem?

Would it be profitable for you if He should investigate your tactics ? Or as one deceives and mocks a man, do you deceive and mock Him?

10 C ertamente vos repreenderá, se em oculto vos deixardes levar de respeitos humanos.

He will surely reprove you if you do secretly show partiality.

11 N ão vos amedrontará a sua majestade? E não cairá sobre vós o seu terror?

Shall not His majesty make you afraid, and should not your awe for Him restrain you?

12 A s vossas máximas são provérbios de cinza; as vossas defesas são torres de barro.

Your memorable sayings are proverbs of ashes; your defenses are defenses of clay.

13 C alai-vos perante mim, para que eu fale, e venha sobre mim o que vier.

Hold your peace! Let me alone, so I may speak; and let come on me what may.

14 T omarei a minha carne entre os meus dentes, e porei a minha vida na minha mão.

Why should I take my flesh in my teeth and put my life in my hands ?

15 E is que ele me matará; não tenho esperança; contudo defenderei os meus caminhos diante dele.

behold, He will slay me; I have no hope—nevertheless, I will maintain and argue my ways before Him and even to His face.

16 T ambém isso será a minha salvação, pois o ímpio não virá perante ele.

This will be my salvation, that a polluted and godless man shall not come before Him.

17 O uvi atentamente as minhas palavras, e chegue aos vossos ouvidos a minha declaração.

Listen diligently to my speech, and let my declaration be in your ears.

18 E is que já pus em ordem a minha causa, e sei que serei achado justo:

Behold now, I have prepared my case; I know that I shall be justified and vindicated.

19 Q uem é o que contenderá comigo? Pois então me calaria e renderia o espírito.

Who is he who will argue against and refute me? For then I would hold my peace and expire.

20 C oncede-me somente duas coisas; então não me esconderei do teu rosto:

Only grant two conditions to me, and then will I not hide myself from You:

21 d esvia a tua mão rara longe de mim, e não me amedronte o teu terror.

Withdraw Your hand and take this bodily suffering far from me; and let not my dread of You terrify me.

22 E ntão chama tu, e eu responderei; ou eu falarei, e me responde tu.

Then call and I will answer, or let me speak, and You answer me.

23 Q uantas iniqüidades e pecados tenho eu? Faze-me saber a minha transgressão e o meu pecado.

How many are my iniquities and sins ? Make me recognize and know my transgression and my sin.

24 P or que escondes o teu rosto, e me tens por teu inimigo?

Why do You hide Your face and alienate me as if I were Your enemy?

25 A cossarás uma folha arrebatada pelo vento? E perseguirás o restolho seco?

Will You harass and frighten a leaf driven to and fro, and will You pursue the chaff of the dry stubble?

26 P ois escreves contra mim coisas amargas, e me fazes herdar os erros da minha mocidade;

For You write bitter things against me and make me inherit and be accountable now for the iniquities of my youth.

27 t ambém pões no tronco os meus pés, e observas todos os meus caminhos, e marcas um termo ao redor dos meus pés,

You put my feet also in the stocks and observe critically all my paths; You set a circle and limit around the soles of my feet.

28 a pesar de eu ser como uma coisa podre que se consome, e como um vestido, ao qual rói a traça.

And he wastes away as a rotten thing, like a garment that is moth-eaten.
