Oh, that you would altogether hold your peace! Then you would evidence your wisdom and you might pass for wise men.

6 H öret doch meine Verantwortung und merket auf die Sache, davon ich rede!

Hear now my reasoning, and listen to the pleadings of my lips.

7 W ollt ihr Gott verteidigen mit Unrecht und für ihn List brauchen?

Will you speak unrighteously for God and talk deceitfully for Him?

8 W ollt ihr seine Person ansehen? Wollt ihr Gott vertreten?

Will you show partiality to Him ? Will you act as special pleaders for God?

9 W ird's euch auch wohl gehen, wenn er euch richten wird? Meint ihr, daß ihr ihn täuschen werdet, wie man einen Menschen täuscht?

Would it be profitable for you if He should investigate your tactics ? Or as one deceives and mocks a man, do you deceive and mock Him?

10 E r wird euch strafen, wo ihr heimlich Person ansehet.

He will surely reprove you if you do secretly show partiality.

11 W ird er euch nicht erschrecken, wenn er sich wird hervortun, und wird seine Furcht nicht über euch fallen?

Shall not His majesty make you afraid, and should not your awe for Him restrain you?

12 E ure Denksprüche sind Aschensprüche; eure Bollwerke werden wie Lehmhaufen sein.

Your memorable sayings are proverbs of ashes; your defenses are defenses of clay.

13 S chweiget mir, daß ich rede, es komme über mich, was da will.

Hold your peace! Let me alone, so I may speak; and let come on me what may.

14 W as soll ich mein Fleisch mit meinen Zähnen davontragen und meine Seele in meine Hände legen?

Why should I take my flesh in my teeth and put my life in my hands ?

15 S iehe, er wird mich doch erwürgen, und ich habe nichts zu hoffen; doch will ich meine Wege vor ihm verantworten.

behold, He will slay me; I have no hope—nevertheless, I will maintain and argue my ways before Him and even to His face.

16 E r wird ja mein Heil sein; denn es kommt kein Heuchler vor ihn.

This will be my salvation, that a polluted and godless man shall not come before Him.

17 H öret meine Rede, und meine Auslegung gehe ein zu euren Ohren.

Listen diligently to my speech, and let my declaration be in your ears.

18 S iehe, ich bin zum Rechtsstreit gerüstet; ich weiß, daß ich recht behalten werde.

Behold now, I have prepared my case; I know that I shall be justified and vindicated.

19 W er ist, der mit mir rechten könnte? Denn dann wollte ich schweigen und verscheiden.

Who is he who will argue against and refute me? For then I would hold my peace and expire.

20 Z weierlei tue mir nur nicht, so will ich mich vor dir nicht verbergen:

Only grant two conditions to me, and then will I not hide myself from You:

21 l aß deine Hand fern von mir sein, und dein Schrecken erschrecke mich nicht!

Withdraw Your hand and take this bodily suffering far from me; and let not my dread of You terrify me.

22 D ann rufe, ich will antworten, oder ich will reden, antworte du mir!

Then call and I will answer, or let me speak, and You answer me.

23 W ie viel ist meiner Missetaten und Sünden? Laß mich wissen meine Übertretung und Sünde.

How many are my iniquities and sins ? Make me recognize and know my transgression and my sin.

24 W arum verbirgst du dein Antlitz und hältst mich für deinen Feind?

Why do You hide Your face and alienate me as if I were Your enemy?

25 W illst du wider ein fliegend Blatt so ernst sein und einen dürren Halm verfolgen?

Will You harass and frighten a leaf driven to and fro, and will You pursue the chaff of the dry stubble?

26 D enn du schreibst mir Betrübnis an und willst über mich bringen die Sünden meiner Jugend.

For You write bitter things against me and make me inherit and be accountable now for the iniquities of my youth.

27 D u hast meinen Fuß in den Stock gelegt und hast acht auf alle meine Pfade und siehst auf die Fußtapfen meiner Füße,

You put my feet also in the stocks and observe critically all my paths; You set a circle and limit around the soles of my feet.

28 d er ich doch wie Moder vergehe und wie ein Kleid, das die Motten fressen.

And he wastes away as a rotten thing, like a garment that is moth-eaten.
