1 A braham nahm wieder ein Weib, die hieß Ketura.

Abraham took another wife, and her name was Keturah.

2 D ie gebar ihm Simran und Joksan, Medan und Midian, Jesbak und Suah.

And she bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.

3 J oksan aber zeugte Saba und Dedan. Die Kinder aber von Dedan waren: die Assuriter, die Letusiter und die Leumiter.

Jokshan was the father of Sheba and Dedan. The sons of Dedan were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim.

4 D ie Kinder Midians waren: Epha, Epher, Henoch, Abida und Eldaa. Diese alle sind Kinder der Ketura.

The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah.

5 U nd Abraham gab all sein Gut Isaak.

And Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac.

6 A ber den Kindern, die er von den Kebsweibern hatte, gab er Geschenke und ließ sie von seinen Sohn Isaak ziehen, dieweil er noch lebte, gegen Aufgang in das Morgenland.

But to the sons of his concubines Abraham gave gifts, and while he was still living he sent them to the east country, away from Isaac his son.

7 D as aber ist Abrahams Alter, das er gelebt hat: hundertfünfundsiebzig Jahre.

The days of Abraham’s life were 175 years.

8 U nd er nahm ab und starb in einem ruhigen Alter, da er alt und lebenssatt war, und ward zu seinem Volk gesammelt.

Then Abraham’s spirit was released, and he died at a good (ample, full) old age, an old man, satisfied and satiated, and was gathered to his people.

9 U nd es begruben ihn die Söhne Isaak und Ismael in der zwiefachen Höhle auf dem Acker Ephrons, des Sohnes Zohars, des Hethiters, die da liegt Mamre gegenüber,

And his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, which is east of Mamre,

10 i n dem Felde, das Abraham von den Kindern Heth gekauft hatte. Da ist Abraham begraben mit Sara, seinem Weibe.

The field which Abraham purchased from the Hittites. There Abraham was buried with Sarah his wife.

11 U nd nach dem Tode Abrahams segnete Gott Isaak, seinen Sohn. Und er wohnte bei dem Brunnen des Lebendigen und Sehenden.

After the death of Abraham, God blessed his son Isaac, and Isaac dwelt at Beer-lahai-roi.

12 D ies ist das Geschlecht Ismaels, des Sohnes Abrahams, den ihm Hagar gebar, die Magd Saras aus Ägypten;

Now this is the history of the descendants of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s handmaid, bore to Abraham.

13 u nd das sind die Namen der Kinder Ismaels, davon ihre Geschlechter genannt sind: der erstgeborene Sohn Ismaels, Nebajoth, -Kedar, Abdeel, Mibsam,

These are the names of the sons of Ishmael, named in the order of their births: Nebaioth, the firstborn of Ishmael, and Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,

14 M isma, Duma, Massa,

Mishma, Dumah, Massa,

15 H adar, Thema, Jetur, Naphis und Kedma.

Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah.

16 D ies sind die Kinder Ismaels mit ihren Namen in ihren Höfen und Zeltdörfern, zwölf Fürsten über ihre Leute.

These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their villages and by their encampments (sheepfolds)—twelve princes according to their tribes.

17 U nd das ist das Alter Ismaels: hundert und siebenunddreißig Jahre. Und er nahm ab und starb und ward gesammelt zu seinem Volk.

And Ishmael lived 137 years; then his spirit left him, and he died and was gathered to his kindred.

18 U nd sie wohnten von Hevila an bis gen Sur vor Ägypten und bis wo man nach Assyrien geht. Er ließ sich aber nieder gegen alle seine Brüder.

And dwelt from Havilah to Shur, which is before Egypt in the direction of Assyria. dwelt close of all his brethren.

19 D ies ist das Geschlecht Isaaks, des Sohnes Abrahams: Abraham zeugte Isaak.

And this is the history of the descendants of Isaac, Abraham’s son: Abraham was the father of Isaac.

20 I saak aber war vierzig Jahre alt, da er Rebekka zum Weibe nahm, die Tochter Bethuels, des Syrers, von Mesopotamien, Labans, des Syrers Schwester.

Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Padan-aram, the sister of Laban the Aramean.

21 I saak aber bat den HERRN für sein Weib, denn sie war unfruchtbar. Und der HERR ließ sich erbitten, und Rebekka, sein Weib, ward schwanger.

And Isaac prayed much to the Lord for his wife because she was unable to bear children; and the Lord granted his prayer, and Rebekah his wife became pregnant.

22 U nd die Kinder stießen sich miteinander in ihrem Leibe. Da sprach sie: Da mir's also sollte gehen, warum bin ich schwanger geworden? und sie ging hin, den HERRN zu fragen.

children struggled together within her; and she said, If it is so, why am I like this? And she went to inquire of the Lord.

23 U nd der HERR sprach zu ihr: Zwei Völker sind in deinem Leibe, und zweierlei Leute werden sich scheiden aus deinem Leibe; und ein Volk wird dem andern Überlegen sein, und der Ältere wird dem Jüngeren dienen.

The Lord said to her, two nations are in your womb, and the separation of two peoples has begun in your body; the one people shall be stronger than the other, and the elder shall serve the younger.

24 D a nun die Zeit kam, daß sie gebären sollte, siehe, da waren Zwillinge in ihrem Leibe.

When her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.

25 D er erste, der herauskam, war rötlich, ganz rauh wie ein Fell; und sie nannten ihn Esau.

The first came out red all over like a hairy garment, and they named him Esau.

26 D arnach kam heraus sein Bruder, der hielt mit seiner Hand die Ferse des Esau; und sie hießen ihn Jakob. Sechzig Jahre alt war Isaak, da sie geboren wurden.

Afterward his brother came forth, and his hand grasped Esau’s heel; so he was named Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she gave birth to them.

27 U nd da nun die Knaben groß wurden, ward Esau ein Jäger und streifte auf dem Felde, Jakob aber ein sanfter Mann und blieb in seinen Hütten.

When the boys grew up, Esau was a cunning and skilled hunter, a man of the outdoors; but Jacob was a plain and quiet man, dwelling in tents.

28 U nd Isaak hatte Esau lieb und aß gern von seinem Weidwerk; Rebekka aber hatte Jakob lieb.

And Isaac loved Esau, because he ate of Esau’s game; but Rebekah loved Jacob.

29 U nd Jakob kochte ein Gericht. Da kam Esau vom Felde und war müde

Jacob was boiling pottage (lentil stew) one day, when Esau came from the field and was faint.

30 u nd sprach zu Jakob: Laß mich kosten das rote Gericht; denn ich bin müde. Daher heißt er Edom.

And Esau said to Jacob, I beg of you, let me have some of that red lentil stew to eat, for I am faint and famished! That is why his name was called Edom.

31 A ber Jakob sprach: Verkaufe mir heute deine Erstgeburt.

Jacob answered, Then sell me today your birthright (the rights of a firstborn).

32 E sau antwortete: Siehe, ich muß doch sterben; was soll mir denn die Erstgeburt?

Esau said, See here, I am at the point of death; what good can this birthright do me?

33 J akob sprach: So schwöre mir heute. Und er schwur ihm und verkaufte also Jakob seine Erstgeburt.

Jacob said, Swear to me today; and he swore to and sold him his birthright.

34 D a gab ihm Jakob Brot und das Linsengericht, und er aß und trank und stand auf und ging davon. Also verachtete Esau seine Erstgeburt.

Then Jacob gave Esau bread and stew of lentils, and he ate and drank and rose up and went his way. Thus Esau scorned his birthright as beneath his notice.
