1 E s kam aber eine Teuerung ins Land nach der vorigen, so zu Abrahams Zeiten war. Und Isaak zog zu Abimelech, der Philister König, zu Gerar.

And there was a famine in the land, other than the former famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Gerar, to Abimelech king of the Philistines.

2 D a erschien ihm der HERR und sprach: Ziehe nicht hinab nach Ägypten, sondern bleibe in dem Lande, das ich dir sage.

And the Lord appeared to him and said, Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land of which I will tell you.

3 S ei ein Fremdling in diesem Lande, und ich will mit dir sein und dich segnen; denn dir und deinem Samen will ich alle diese Länder geben und will meinen Eid bestätigen, den ich deinem Vater Abraham geschworen habe,

Dwell temporarily in this land, and I will be with you and will favor you with blessings; for to you and to your descendants I will give all these lands, and I will perform the oath which I swore to Abraham your father.

4 u nd will deinem Samen mehren wie die Sterne am Himmel und will deinem Samen alle diese Länder geben. Und durch deinen Samen sollen alle Völker auf Erden gesegnet werden,

And I will make your descendants to multiply as the stars of the heavens, and will give to your posterity all these lands (kingdoms); and by your Offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, or by Him bless themselves,

5 d arum daß Abraham meiner Stimme gehorsam gewesen ist und hat gehalten meine Rechte, meine Gebote, meine Weise und mein Gesetz.

For Abraham listened to and obeyed My voice and kept My charge, My commands, My statutes, and My laws.

6 A lso wohnte Isaak zu Gerar.

So Isaac stayed in Gerar.

7 U nd wenn die Leute an demselben Ort fragten nach seinem Weibe, so sprach er: Sie ist meine Schwester. Denn er fürchtete sich zu sagen: Sie ist mein Weib; sie möchten mich erwürgen um Rebekkas willen, denn sie war schön von Angesicht.

And the men of the place asked him about his wife, and he said, She is my sister; for he was afraid to say, She is my wife—, Lest the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah, because she is attractive and is beautiful to look upon.

8 A ls er nun eine Zeitlang da war, sah Abimelech, der Philister König, durchs Fenster und ward gewahr, daß Isaak scherzte mit seinem Weibe Rebekka.

When he had been there a long time, Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out of a window and saw Isaac caressing Rebekah his wife.

9 D a rief Abimelech den Isaak und sprach: Siehe, es ist dein Weib. Wie hast du denn gesagt: Sie ist meine Schwester? Isaak antwortete ihm: Ich gedachte, ich möchte vielleicht sterben müssen um ihretwillen.

And Abimelech called Isaac and said, See here, she is certainly your wife! How did you say to me, She is my sister? And Isaac said to him, Because I thought, Lest I die on account of her.

10 A bimelech sprach: Warum hast du das getan? Es wäre leicht geschehen, daß jemand vom Volk sich zu deinem Weibe gelegt hätte, und hättest also eine Schuld auf uns gebracht.

And Abimelech said, What is this you have done to us? One of the men might easily have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt and sin upon us.

11 D a gebot Abimelech allem Volk und sprach: Wer diesen Mann oder sein Weib antastet, der soll des Todes sterben.

Then Abimelech charged all his people, He who touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.

12 U nd Isaak säte in dem Lande und erntete desselben Jahres hundertfältig; denn der HERR segnete ihn.

Then Isaac sowed seed in that land and received in the same year a hundred times as much as he had planted, and the Lord favored him with blessings.

13 U nd er ward ein großer Mann und nahm immer mehr zu, bis er sehr groß ward,

And the man became great and gained more and more until he became very wealthy and distinguished;

14 d aß er viel Gut hatte an kleinem und großem Vieh und ein großes Gesinde. Darum beneideten ihn die Philister

He owned flocks, herds, and a great supply of servants, and the Philistines envied him.

15 u nd verstopften alle Brunnen, die seines Vaters Knechte gegraben hatten zur Zeit Abrahams, seines Vaters, und füllten sie mit Erde;

Now all the wells which his father’s servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had closed and filled with earth.

16 d aß auch Abimelech zu ihm sprach: Ziehe von uns, denn du bist uns zu mächtig geworden.

And Abimelech said to Isaac, Go away from us, for you are much mightier than we are.

17 D a zog Isaak von dannen und schlug sein Gezelt auf im Grunde Gerar und wohnte allda

So Isaac went away from there and pitched his tent in the Valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.

18 u nd ließ die Wasserbrunnen wieder aufgraben, die sie zu Abrahams, seines Vaters, Zeiten gegraben hatten, welche die Philister verstopft hatten nach Abrahams Tod, und nannte sie mit demselben Namen mit denen sie sein Vater genannt hatte.

And Isaac dug again the wells of water which had been dug in the days of Abraham his father, for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham; and he gave them the names by which his father had called them.

19 A uch gruben Isaaks Knechte im Grunde und fanden daselbst einen Brunnen lebendigen Wassers.

Now Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and found there a well of living water.

20 A ber die Hirten von Gerar zankten mit den Hirten Isaaks und sprachen: Das Wasser ist unser. Da hieß er den Brunnen Esek, darum daß sie ihm unrecht getan hatten.

And the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac’s herdsmen, saying, The water is ours. And he named the well Esek because they quarreled with him.

21 D a gruben sie einen andern Brunnen. Darüber zankten sie auch, darum hieß er ihn Sitna.

Then dug another well, and they quarreled over that also; so he named it Sitnah.

22 D a machte er sich von dannen und grub einen andern Brunnen. Darüber zankten sie sich nicht; darum hieß er ihn Rehoboth und sprach: Nun hat uns der HERR Raum gemacht und uns wachsen lassen im Lande.

And he moved away from there and dug another well, and for that one they did not quarrel. He named it Rehoboth, saying, For now the Lord has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.

23 D arnach zog er von dannen gen Beer-Seba.

Now he went up from there to Beersheba.

24 U nd der HERR erschien ihm in derselben Nacht und sprach: Ich bin deines Vaters Abrahams Gott. Fürchte dich nicht; denn ich bin mit dir und will dich segnen und deinen Samen mehren um meines Knechtes Abraham willen.

And the Lord appeared to him the same night and said, I am the God of Abraham your father. Fear not, for I am with you and will favor you with blessings and multiply your descendants for the sake of My servant Abraham.

25 D a baute er einen Altar daselbst und predigte von dem Namen des HERRN und richtete daselbst seine Hütte auf, und seine Knechte gruben daselbst einen Brunnen.

And built an altar there and called on the name of the Lord and pitched his tent there; and there Isaac’s servants were digging a well.

26 U nd Abimelech ging zu ihm von Gerar, und Ahussat, sein Freund, und Phichol, sein Feldhauptmann.

Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar with Ahuzzah, one of his friends, and Phicol, his army’s commander.

27 A ber Isaak sprach zu ihnen: Warum kommt ihr zu mir? Haßt ihr mich doch und habt mich von euch getrieben.

And Isaac said to them, Why have you come to me, seeing that you hate me and have sent me away from you?

28 S ie sprachen: Wir sehen mit sehenden Augen, daß der HERR mit dir ist. Darum sprachen wir: Es soll ein Eid zwischen uns und dir sein, und wir wollen einen Bund mit dir machen,

They said, We saw that the Lord was certainly with you; so we said, Let there be now an oath between us, even between you and us, and let us make a covenant with you

29 d aß du uns keinen Schaden tust, gleichwie wir dir nichts denn alles Gute getan haben und dich mit Frieden haben ziehen lassen. Du aber bist nun der Gesegnete des HERRN.

That you will do us no harm, inasmuch as we have not touched you and have done to you nothing but good and have sent you away in peace. You are now the blessed or favored of the Lord!

30 D a machte er ihnen ein Mahl, und sie aßen und tranken.

And he made them a dinner, and they ate and drank.

31 U nd des Morgens früh standen sie auf und schwur einer dem andern; und Isaak ließ sie gehen, und sie zogen von ihm mit Frieden.

And they rose up early in the morning and took oaths with one another; and Isaac sent them on their way and they departed from him in peace.

32 D esselben Tages aber kamen Isaaks Knechte und sagten ihm an von dem Brunnen, den sie gegraben hatten, und sprachen zu ihm: Wir haben Wasser gefunden.

That same day Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well they had dug, saying, We have found water!

33 U nd er nannte ihn Seba; daher heißt die Stadt Beer-Seba bis auf den heutigen Tag.

And he named Shibah; therefore the name of the city is Beersheba to this day.

34 D a Esau vierzig Jahre alt war, nahm er zum Weibe Judith, die Tochter Beeris, des Hethiters, und Basmath, die Tochter Elons, des Hethiters.

Now Esau was 40 years old when he took as wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite.

35 D ie machten beide Isaak und Rebekka eitel Herzeleid.

And they made life bitter and a grief of mind and spirit for Isaac and Rebekah.
