1 U nd es begab sich, da Isaak alt war geworden und seine Augen dunkel wurden zu sehen, rief er Esau, seinen älteren Sohn, und sprach zu ihm: Mein Sohn! Er aber antwortete ihm: Hier bin ich.

When Isaac was old and his eyes were dim so that he could not see, he called Esau his elder son, and said to him, My son! And he answered him, Here I am.

2 U nd er sprach: Siehe, ich bin alt geworden und weiß nicht, wann ich sterben soll.

He said, See here now; I am old, I do not know when I may die.

3 S o nimm nun dein Geräte, Köcher und Bogen, und geh aufs Feld und fange mir ein Wildbret

So now, I pray you, take your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out into the open country and hunt game for me,

4 u nd mache mir ein Essen, wie ich's gern habe, und bringe mir's herein, daß ich esse, daß dich meine Seele segne, ehe ich sterbe.

And prepare me appetizing meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat of it, to giving you my blessing before I die.

5 R ebekka aber hörte solche Worte, die Isaak zu seinem Sohn Esau sagte. Und Esau ging hin aufs Feld, daß er ein Wildbret jagte und heimbrächte.

But Rebekah heard what Isaac said to Esau his son; and when Esau had gone to the open country to hunt for game that he might bring it,

6 D a sprach Rebekka zu Jakob, ihrem Sohn: Siehe, ich habe gehört deinen Vater reden mit Esau, deinem Bruder, und sagen:

Rebekah said to Jacob her younger son, See here, I heard your father say to Esau your brother,

7 B ringe mir ein Wildbret und mache mir ein Essen, daß ich esse und dich segne vor dem HERRN, ehe ich sterbe.

Bring me game and make me appetizing meat, so that I may eat and declare my blessing upon you before the Lord before my death.

8 S o höre nun, mein Sohn, meine Stimme, was ich dich heiße.

So now, my son, do exactly as I command you.

9 G ehe hin zur Herde und hole mir zwei gute Böcklein, daß ich deinem Vater ein Essen davon mache, wie er's gerne hat.

Go now to the flock, and from it bring me two good and suitable kids; and I will make them into appetizing meat for your father, such as he loves.

10 D as sollst du deinem Vater hineintragen, daß er esse, auf daß er dich segne vor seinem Tode.

And you shall bring it to your father, that he may eat and declare his blessing upon you before his death.

11 J akob aber sprach zu seiner Mutter Rebekka: Siehe, mein Bruder Esau ist rauh, und ich glatt;

But Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, Listen, Esau my brother is a hairy man and I am a smooth man.

12 s o möchte vielleicht mein Vater mich betasten, und ich würde vor ihm geachtet, als ob ich ihn betrügen wollte, und brächte über mich einen Fluch und nicht einen Segen.

Suppose my father feels me; I will seem to him to be a cheat and an imposter, and I will bring curse on me and not blessing.

13 D a sprach seine Mutter zu ihm: Der Fluch sei auf mir, mein Sohn; gehorche nur meiner Stimme, gehe und hole mir.

But his mother said to him, On me be your curse, my son; only obey my word and go, fetch them to me.

14 D a ging er hin und holte und brachte es seiner Mutter. Da machte seine Mutter ein Essen, wie es sein Vater gern hatte,

So went, got, and brought them to his mother; and his mother prepared appetizing meat with a delightful odor, such as his father loved.

15 u nd nahm Esaus, ihres älteren Sohnes, köstliche Kleider, die sie bei sich im Hause hatte, und zog sie Jakob an, ihrem jüngeren Sohn;

Then Rebekah took her elder son Esau’s best clothes which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob her younger son.

16 a ber die Felle von den Böcklein tat sie um seine Hände, und wo er glatt war am Halse,

And she put the skins of the kids on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck.

17 u nd gab also das Essen mit Brot, wie sie es gemacht hatte, in Jakobs Hand, ihres Sohnes.

And she gave the savory meat and the bread which she had prepared into the hand of her son Jacob.

18 U nd er ging hinein zu seinem Vater und sprach: Mein Vater! Er antwortete: Hier bin ich. Wer bist du, mein Sohn?

So he went to his father and said, My father. And he said, Here am I; who are you, my son?

19 J akob sprach zu seinem Vater: Ich bin Esau, dein erstgeborener Sohn; ich habe getan, wie du mir gesagt hast. Steh auf, setze dich und iß von meinem Wildbret, auf daß mich deine Seele segne.

And Jacob said to his father, I am Esau your firstborn; I have done what you told me to do. Now sit up and eat of my game, so that you may proceed to bless me.

20 I saak aber sprach zu seinem Sohn: Mein Sohn, wie hast du so bald gefunden? Er antwortete: Der HERR, dein Gott, bescherte mir's.

And Isaac said to his son, How is it that you have found the game so quickly, my son? And he said, Because the Lord your God caused it to come to me.

21 D a sprach Isaak zu Jakob: Tritt herzu, mein Sohn, daß ich dich betaste, ob du mein Sohn Esau seiest oder nicht.

But Isaac said to Jacob, Come close to me, I beg of you, that I may feel you, my son, and know whether you really are my son Esau or not.

22 A lso trat Jakob zu seinem Vater Isaak; und da er ihn betastet hatte, sprach er: Die Stimme ist Jakobs Stimme, aber die Hände sind Esaus Hände.

So Jacob went near to Isaac, and his father felt him and said, The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.

23 U nd er kannte ihn nicht; denn seine Hände waren rauh wie Esaus, seines Bruders, Hände. Und er segnete ihn

He could not identify him, because his hands were hairy like his brother Esau’s hands; so he blessed him.

24 u nd sprach zu ihm: Bist du mein Sohn Esau? Er antwortete: Ja, ich bin's.

But he said, Are you really my son Esau? He answered, I am.

25 D a sprach er: So bringe mir her, mein Sohn, zu essen von deinem Wildbret, daß dich meine Seele segne. Da brachte er's ihm, und er aß, und trug ihm auch Wein hinein, und er trank.

Then said, Bring it to me and I will eat of my son’s game, that I may bless you. He brought it to him and he ate; and he brought him wine and he drank.

26 U nd Isaak, sein Vater, sprach zu ihm: Komm her und küsse mich, mein Sohn.

Then his father Isaac said, Come near and kiss me, my son.

27 E r trat hinzu und küßte ihn. Da roch er den Geruch seiner Kleider und segnete ihn und sprach: Siehe, der Geruch meines Sohnes ist wie ein Geruch des Feldes, das der HERR gesegnet hat.

So he came near and kissed him; and smelled his clothing and blessed him and said, The scent of my son is as the odor of a field which the Lord has blessed.

28 G ott gebe dir vom Tau des Himmels und von der Fettigkeit der Erde und Korn und Wein die Fülle.

And may God give you of the dew of the heavens and of the fatness of the earth and abundance of grain and wine;

29 V ölker müssen dir dienen, und Leute müssen dir zu Fuße fallen. Sei ein Herr über deine Brüder, und deiner Mutter Kinder müssen dir zu Fuße fallen. Verflucht sei, wer dir flucht; gesegnet sei, wer dich segnet.

Let peoples serve you and nations bow down to you; be master over your brothers, and let your mother’s sons bow down to you. Let everyone be cursed who curses you and favored with blessings who blesses you.

30 A ls nun Isaak vollendet hatte den Segen über Jakob, und Jakob kaum hinausgegangen war von seinem Vater Isaak, da kam Esau, sein Bruder, von seiner Jagd

As soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob and Jacob was scarcely gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, Esau his brother came in from his hunting.

31 u nd machte auch ein Essen und trug's hinein zu seinem Vater und sprach zu ihm: Steh auf, mein Vater, und iß von dem Wildbret deines Sohnes, daß mich deine Seele segne.

Esau had also prepared savory food and brought it to his father and said to him, Let my father arise and eat of his son’s game, that you may bless me.

32 D a antwortete ihm Isaak, sein Vater: Wer bist du? Er sprach: Ich bin Esau, dein erstgeborener Sohn.

And Isaac his father said to him, Who are you? And he replied, I am your son, your firstborn, Esau.

33 D a entsetzte sich Isaak über die Maßen sehr und sprach: Wer ist denn der Jäger, der mir gebracht hat, und ich habe von allem gegessen, ehe du kamst, und habe ihn gesegnet? Er wird auch gesegnet bleiben.

Then Isaac trembled and shook violently, and he said, Who? Where is he who has hunted game and brought it to me, and I ate of it all before you came and I have blessed him? Yes, and he shall be blessed.

34 A ls Esau diese Rede seines Vaters hörte, schrie er laut und ward über die Maßen sehr betrübt und sprach zu seinem Vater: Segne mich auch, mein Vater!

When Esau heard the words of his father, he cried out with a great and bitter cry and said to his father, Bless me, even me also, O my father!

35 E r aber sprach: Dein Bruder ist gekommen mit List und hat deinen Segen hinweg.

said, Your brother came with crafty cunning and treacherous deceit and has taken your blessing.

36 D a sprach er: Er heißt wohl Jakob; denn er hat mich nun zweimal überlistet. Meine Erstgeburt hat er dahin; und siehe, nun nimmt er auch meinen Segen. Und sprach: Hast du mir denn keinen Segen vorbehalten?

replied, Is he not rightly named Jacob ? For he has supplanted me these two times: he took away my birthright, and now he has taken away my blessing! Have you not still a blessing reserved for me?

37 I saak antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Ich habe ihn zu Herrn über dich gesetzt, und alle seine Brüder habe ich ihm zu Knechten gemacht, mit Korn und Wein habe ich ihn versehen; was soll ich doch dir nun tun, mein Sohn?

And Isaac answered Esau, Behold, I have made your lord and master; I have given all his brethren to him for servants, and with corn and wine have I sustained him. What then can I do for you, my son?

38 E sau sprach zu seinem Vater: Hast du denn nur einen Segen, mein Vater? Segne mich auch, mein Vater! und hob auf seine Stimme und weinte.

Esau said to his father, Have you only one blessing, my father? Bless me, even me also, O my father! And Esau lifted up his voice and wept aloud.

39 D a antwortete Isaak, sein Vater, und sprach zu ihm: Siehe da, du wirst eine Wohnung haben ohne Fettigkeit der Erde und ohne Tau des Himmels von obenher.

Then Isaac his father answered, Your dwelling shall all come from the fruitfulness of the earth and from the dew of the heavens above;

40 V on deinem Schwerte wirst du dich nähren und deinem Bruder dienen. Und es wird geschehen, daß du auch ein Herr sein und sein Joch von deinem Halse reißen wirst.

By your sword you shall live and serve your brother. But when you will grow restive and break loose, and you shall tear his yoke from off your neck.

41 U nd Esau war Jakob gram um des Segens willen, mit dem ihn sein Vater gesegnet hatte, und sprach in seinem Herzen: Es wird die Zeit bald kommen, da man um meinen Vater Leid tragen muß; dann will ich meinen Bruder Jakob erwürgen.

And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him; and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are very near. When I will kill my brother Jacob.

42 D a wurden Rebekka angesagt diese Worte ihres älteren Sohnes Esau; und sie schickte hin und ließ Jakob, ihren jüngeren Sohn, rufen und sprach zu ihm: Siehe, dein Bruder Esau droht dir, daß er dich erwürgen will.

These words of Esau her elder son were repeated to Rebekah. She sent for Jacob her younger son and said to him, See here, your brother Esau comforts himself concerning you to kill you.

43 U nd nun höre meine Stimme, mein Sohn: Mache dich auf und fliehe zu meinem Bruder Laban gen Haran

So now, my son, do what I tell you; arise, flee to my brother Laban in Haran;

44 u nd bleib eine Weile bei ihm, bis sich der Grimm deines Bruders legt

Linger and dwell with him for a while until your brother’s fury is spent.

45 u nd bis sich sein Zorn wider dich von dir wendet und er vergißt, was du an ihm getan hast; so will ich darnach schicken und dich von dannen holen lassen. Warum sollte ich euer beider beraubt werden auf einen Tag?

When your brother’s anger is diverted from you, he will forget that you have done him. Then I will send and bring you back from there. Why should I be deprived of both of you in one day?

46 U nd Rebekka sprach zu Isaak: Mich verdrießt, zu leben vor den Töchter Heth. Wo Jakob ein Weib nimmt von den Töchter Heth wie diese, von den Töchtern des Landes, was soll mir das Leben?

Then Rebekah said to Isaac, I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth! If Jacob takes a wife of the daughters of Heth such as these Hittite girls around here, what good will my life be to me?
