1 U nd der HERR antwortete Hiob und sprach:

Moreover, the Lord said to Job,

2 W ill mit dem Allmächtigen rechten der Haderer? Wer Gott tadelt, soll's der nicht verantworten?

Shall he who would find fault with the Almighty contend with Him? He who disputes with God, let him answer it.

3 H iob aber antwortete dem HERRN und sprach:

Then Job replied to the Lord:

4 S iehe, ich bin zu leichtfertig gewesen; was soll ich verantworten? Ich will meine Hand auf meinen Mund legen.

Behold, I am of small account and vile! What shall I answer You? I lay my hand upon my mouth.

5 I ch habe einmal geredet, und will nicht antworten; zum andernmal will ich's nicht mehr tun.

I have spoken once, but I will not reply again—indeed, twice, but I will proceed no further.

6 U nd der HERR antwortete Hiob aus dem Wetter und sprach:

Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, saying,

7 G ürte wie ein Mann deine Lenden; ich will dich fragen, lehre mich!

Gird up your loins now like a man; I will demand of you, and you answer Me.

8 S olltest du mein Urteil zunichte machen und mich verdammen, daß du gerecht seist?

Will you also annul (set aside and render void) My judgment? Will you condemn Me, that you may righteous and justified?

9 H ast du einen Arm wie Gott, und kannst mit gleicher Stimme donnern, wie er tut?

Have you an arm like God? Or can you thunder with a voice like His?

10 S chmücke dich mit Pracht und erhebe dich; ziehe Majestät und Herrlichkeit an!

deck yourself now with the excellency and dignity, and array yourself with honor and majesty.

11 S treue aus den Zorn deines Grimmes; schaue an die Hochmütigen, wo sie sind, und demütige sie!

Pour forth the overflowings of your anger, and look on everyone who is proud and abase him;

12 J a, schaue die Hochmütigen, wo sie sind und beuge sie; und zermalme die Gottlosen, wo sie sind!

Look on everyone who is proud and bring him low, and tread down the wicked where they stand.

13 V erscharre sie miteinander in die Erde und versenke ihre Pracht ins Verborgene,

hide them all in the dust together; shut them up.

14 s o will ich dir auch bekennen, daß dir deine rechte Hand helfen kann.

then will I praise you also your own right hand can save you.

15 S iehe da, den Behemoth, den ich neben dir gemacht habe; er frißt Gras wie ein Ochse.

Behold now the behemoth (the hippopotamus), which I created as I did you; he eats grass like an ox.

16 S iehe seine Kraft ist in seinen Lenden und sein Vermögen in den Sehnen seines Bauches.

See now, his strength is in his loins, and his power is in the sinews of his belly.

17 S ein Schwanz streckt sich wie eine Zeder; die Sehnen seiner Schenkel sind dicht geflochten.

He moves his tail like a cedar tree; the tendons of his thighs are twisted together.

18 S eine Knochen sind wie eherne Röhren; seine Gebeine sind wie eiserne Stäbe.

His bones are like tubes of bronze; his limbs are like bars of iron.

19 E r ist der Anfang der Wege Gottes; der ihn gemacht hat, der gab ihm sein Schwert.

is the first of the works of God; He Who made him provides him with his.

20 D ie Berge tragen ihm Kräuter, und alle wilden Tiere spielen daselbst.

Surely the mountains bring him food, where all the wild animals play.

21 E r liegt gern im Schatten, im Rohr und im Schlamm verborgen.

He lies under the lotus trees, in the covert of the reeds in the marsh.

22 D as Gebüsch bedeckt ihn mit seinem Schatten, und die Bachweiden umgeben ihn.

The lotus trees cover him with their shade; the willows of the brook compass him about.

23 S iehe, er schluckt in sich den Strom und achtet's nicht groß; läßt sich dünken, er wolle den Jordan mit seinem Munde ausschöpfen.

Behold, if a river is violent and overflows, he does not tremble; he is confident, though the Jordan swells and rushes against his mouth.

24 F ängt man ihn wohl vor seinen Augen und durchbohrt ihm mit Stricken seine Nase?

Can any take him when he is on the watch, or pierce through his nose with a snare?
