1 H öret, meine Kinder, die Zucht eures Vaters; merket auf, daß ihr lernt und klug werdet!

Hear, my sons, the instruction of a father, and pay attention in order to gain and to know intelligent discernment, comprehension, and interpretation.

2 D enn ich gebe euch eine gute Lehre; verlaßt mein Gesetz nicht.

For I give you good doctrine; do not forsake my teaching.

3 D enn ich war meines Vaters Sohn, ein zarter und ein einziger vor meiner Mutter.

When I was a son with my father, tender and the only son in the sight of my mother,

4 U nd er lehrte mich und sprach: Laß dein Herz meine Worte aufnehmen; halte meine Gebote, so wirst du leben.

He taught me and said to me, Let your heart hold fast my words; keep my commandments and live.

5 N imm an Weisheit, nimm an Verstand; vergiß nicht und weiche nicht von der Rede meines Mundes.

Get skillful and godly Wisdom, get understanding (discernment, comprehension, and interpretation); do not forget and do not turn back from the words of my mouth.

6 V erlaß sie nicht, so wird sie dich bewahren; liebe sie, so wird sie dich behüten.

Forsake not, and she will keep, defend, and protect you; love her, and she will guard you.

7 D enn der Weisheit Anfang ist, wenn man sie gerne hört und die Klugheit lieber hat als alle Güter.

The beginning of Wisdom is: get Wisdom (skillful and godly Wisdom)! And with all you have gotten, get understanding (discernment, comprehension, and interpretation).

8 A chte sie hoch, so wird sie dich erhöhen, und wird dich zu Ehren bringen, wo du sie herzest.

Prize Wisdom highly and exalt her, and she will exalt and promote you; she will bring you to honor when you embrace her.

9 S ie wird dein Haupt schön schmücken und wird dich zieren mit einer prächtigen Krone.

She shall give to your head a wreath of gracefulness; a crown of beauty and glory will she deliver to you.

10 S o höre, mein Kind, und nimm an meine Rede, so werden deiner Jahre viel werden.

Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings, and the years of your life shall be many.

11 I ch will dich den Weg der Weisheit führen; ich will dich auf rechter Bahn leiten,

I have taught you in the way of skillful and godly Wisdom; I have led you in paths of uprightness.

12 d aß, wenn du gehst, dein Gang dir nicht sauer werde, und wenn du läufst, daß du nicht anstoßest.

When you walk, your steps shall not be hampered; and when you run, you shall not stumble.

13 F asse die Zucht, laß nicht davon; bewahre sie, denn sie ist dein Leben.

Take firm hold of instruction, do not let go; guard her, for she is your life.

14 K omm nicht auf der Gottlosen Pfad und tritt nicht auf den Weg der Bösen.

Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men.

15 L aß ihn fahren und gehe nicht darin; weiche von ihm und gehe vorüber.

Avoid it, do not go on it; turn from it and pass on.

16 D enn sie schlafen nicht, sie haben denn Übel getan; und ruhen nicht, sie haben den Schaden getan.

For they cannot sleep unless they have caused trouble or vexation; their sleep is taken away unless they have caused someone to fall.

17 D enn sie nähren sich von gottlosem Brot und trinken vom Wein des Frevels.

For they eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence.

18 A ber der Gerechten Pfad glänzt wie das Licht, das immer heller leuchtet bis auf den vollen Tag.

But the path of the just and righteous is like the light of dawn, that shines more and more (brighter and clearer) until the perfect day.

19 D er Gottlosen Weg aber ist wie Dunkel; sie wissen nicht, wo sie fallen werden.

The way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know over what they stumble.

20 M ein Sohn, merke auf meine Worte und neige dein Ohr zu meiner Rede.

My son, attend to my words; consent and submit to my sayings.

21 L aß sie nicht von deinen Augen fahren, behalte sie in deinem Herzen.

Let them not depart from your sight; keep them in the center of your heart.

22 D enn sie sind das Leben denen, die sie finden, und gesund ihrem ganzen Leibe.

For they are life to those who find them, healing and health to all their flesh.

23 B ehüte dein Herz mit allem Fleiß; denn daraus geht das Leben.

Keep and guard your heart with all vigilance and above all that you guard, for out of it flow the springs of life.

24 T ue von dir den verkehrten Mund und laß das Lästermaul ferne von dir sein.

Put away from you false and dishonest speech, and willful and contrary talk put far from you.

25 L aß deine Augen stracks vor sich sehen und deine Augenlider richtig vor dir hin blicken.

Let your eyes look right on, and let your gaze be straight before you.

26 L aß deinen Fuß gleich vor sich gehen, so gehst du gewiß.

Consider well the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established and ordered aright.

27 W anke weder zur Rechten noch zur Linken; wende deinen Fuß vom Bösen.

Turn not aside to the right hand or to the left; remove your foot from evil.
