1 I m zwölften Monat, das ist der Monat Adar, am dreizehnten Tag, den des Königs Wort und Gebot bestimmt hatte, daß man's tun sollte, ebendesselben Tages, da die Feinde der Juden hofften, sie zu überwältigen, wandte sich's, daß die Juden ihre Feinde überwältigen sollten.

Now in the twelfth month, the month of Adar, on the thirteenth day of Adar when the king’s command and his edict were about to be executed, on the day that the enemies of the Jews had planned for a massacre of them, it was turned to the contrary and the Jews had rule over those who hated them.

2 D a versammelten sich die Juden in ihren Städten in allen Landen des Königs Ahasveros, daß sie die Hand legten an die, so ihnen übel wollten. Und niemand konnte ihnen widerstehen; denn ihre Furcht war über alle Völker gekommen.

The Jews gathered together in their cities throughout all the provinces of King Ahasuerus to lay hands on such as sought their hurt; and no man could withstand them, for the fear of them had fallen upon all the peoples.

3 A uch alle Obersten in den Landen und Fürsten und Landpfleger und Amtleute des Königs halfen den Juden; denn die Furcht vor Mardochai war über sie gekommen.

And all the princes of the provinces and the chief rulers and the governors and they who attended to the king’s business helped the Jews, because the fear of Mordecai had fallen upon them.

4 D enn Mardochai war groß im Hause des Königs, und sein Gerücht erscholl in allen Ländern, wie er zunähme und groß würde.

For Mordecai was great in the king’s palace; and his fame went forth throughout all the provinces, for the man Mordecai became more and more powerful.

5 A lso schlugen die Juden an allen ihren Feinden eine Schwertschlacht und würgten und raubten und brachten um und taten nach ihrem Willen an denen, die ihnen feind waren.

So the Jews smote all their enemies with the sword, slaughtering and destroying them, and did as they chose with those who hated them.

6 U nd zu Schloß Susan erwürgten die Juden und brachten um fünfhundert Mann;

In Shushan, the capital itself, the Jews slew and destroyed 500 men.

7 d azu erwürgten sie Parsandatha, Dalphon, Aspatha,

And they killed Parshandatha,

8 P oratha, Adalja, Aridatha,

Dalphon, Aspatha, Poratha, Adalia,

9 P armastha, Arisai, Aridai, Vajesatha,

Aridatha, Parmashta, Arisai, Aridai,

10 d ie zehn Söhne Hamans, des Sohne Hammedathas, des Judenfeindes. Aber an die Güter legten sie ihre Hände nicht.

And Vaizatha, the ten sons of Haman son of Hammedatha, the Jews’ enemy; but on the spoil they laid not their hands.

11 Z u derselben Zeit kam die Zahl der Erwürgten zu Schloß Susan vor den König.

On that day the number of those who were slain in Shushan, the capital, was brought before the king.

12 U nd der König sprach zu der Königin Esther: Die Juden haben zu Schloß Susan fünfhundert Mann erwürgt und umgebracht und die zehn Söhne Hamans; was werden sie tun in den andern Ländern des Königs? was bittest du, daß man dir gebe? und was forderst du mehr, daß man tue?

And the king said to Esther the queen, The Jews have slain and destroyed 500 men in Shushan, the capital, and the ten sons of Haman. What then have they done in the rest of the king’s provinces! Now what is your petition? It shall be granted to you. Or what is your request further? It shall be done.

13 E sther sprach: Gefällt's dem König, so lasse er auch morgen die Juden tun nach dem heutigen Gebot, und die zehn Söhne Hamans soll man an den Baum hängen.

Then said Esther, If it pleases the king, let it be granted to the Jews which are in Shushan to do tomorrow also according to this day’s decree, and let Haman’s ten sons be hanged on the gallows.

14 U nd der König hieß also tun. Und das Gebot ward zu Susan angeschlagen, und die zehn Söhne Haman wurden gehängt.

And the king commanded it to be done; the decree was given in Shushan, and they hanged Haman’s ten sons.

15 U nd die Juden zu Susan versammelten sich auch am vierzehnten Tage des Monats Adar und erwürgten zu Susan dreihundert Mann; aber an ihre Güter legten sie ihre Hände nicht.

And the Jews that were in Shushan gathered together on the fourteenth day also of the month of Adar and slew 300 men in Shushan, but on the spoil they laid not their hands.

16 A ber die andern Juden in den Ländern des Königs kamen zusammen und standen für ihr Leben, daß sie Ruhe schafften vor ihren Feinden, und erwürgten ihrer Feinde fünfundsiebzigtausend; aber an ihre Güter legten sie ihre Hände nicht.

And the other Jews who were in the king’s provinces gathered to defend their lives and had relief and rest from their enemies and slew of them that hated them 75, 000; but on the spoil they laid not their hands.

17 D as geschah am dreizehnten Tage des Monats Adar, und sie ruhten am vierzehnten Tage desselben Monats; den machte man zum Tage des Wohllebens und der Freude.

This was done on the thirteenth day of the month of Adar, and on the fourteenth day they rested and made it a day of feasting and gladness.

18 A ber die Juden zu Susan waren zusammengekommen am dreizehnten und am vierzehnten Tage und ruhten am fünfzehnten Tag; und den Tag machte man zum Tage des Wohllebens und der Freude.

But the Jews who were in Shushan assembled on the thirteenth day and on the fourteenth, and on the fifteenth day they rested and made it a day of feasting and gladness.

19 D arum machten die Juden, die auf den Dörfern und Flecken wohnten, den vierzehnten Tag des Monats Adar zum Tag des Wohllebens und der Freude, und sandte einer dem andern Geschenke.

Therefore the Jews of the villages, who dwell in the unwalled towns, make the fourteenth day of the month of Adar a day of gladness and feasting, a holiday, and a day for sending choice portions to one another.

20 U nd Mardochai schrieb diese Geschichten auf und sandte Briefe an alle Juden, die in den Landen des Königs Ahasveros waren, nahen und fernen,

And Mordecai recorded these things, and he sent letters to all the Jews who were in all the provinces of the King Ahasuerus, both near and far,

21 d aß sie annähmen und hielten den vierzehnten und fünfzehnten Tag des Monats Adar jährlich,

To command them to keep the fourteenth day of the month of Adar and also the fifteenth, yearly,

22 n ach den Tagen, darin die Juden zur Ruhe gekommen waren von ihren Feinden und nach dem Monat, darin ihre Schmerzen in Freude und ihr Leid in gute Tage verkehrt war; daß sie dieselben halten sollten als Tage des Wohllebens und der Freude und einer dem andern Geschenke schicken und den Armen mitteilen.

As the days on which the Jews got rest from their enemies, and as the month which was turned for them from sorrow to gladness and from mourning into a holiday—that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, days of sending choice portions to one another and gifts to the poor.

23 U nd die Juden nahmen's an, was sie angefangen hatten zu tun und was Mardochai an sie schrieb:

So the Jews undertook to do as they had begun and as Mordecai had written to them—

24 w ie Haman, der Sohn Hammedathas, der Agagiter, aller Juden Feind, gedacht hatte, alle Juden umzubringen, und das Pur, das ist das Los, werfen lassen, sie zu erschrecken und umzubringen;

Because Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had plotted against the Jews to destroy them and had cast Pur, that is, the lot, to crush and consume and destroy them.

25 u nd wie Esther zum König gegangen war und derselbe durch Briefe geboten hatte, daß seine bösen Anschläge, die er wider die Juden gedacht, auf seinen Kopf gekehrt würden; und wie man ihn und seine Söhne an den Baum gehängt hatte.

But when Esther brought the matter before the king, he commanded in writing that Haman’s wicked scheme which he had devised against the Jews should return upon his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.

26 D aher sie diese Tage Purim nannten nach dem Namen des Loses. Und nach allen Worten dieses Briefes und dem, was sie selbst gesehen hatten und was an sie gelangt war,

Therefore they called these days Purim, after the name Pur. Therefore, because of all that was in this letter and what they had faced in this matter and what had happened to them,

27 r ichteten die Juden es auf und nahmen's auf sich und auf ihre Nachkommen und auf alle, die sich zu ihnen taten, daß sie nicht unterlassen wollten, zu halten diese zwei Tage jährlich, wie die vorgeschrieben und bestimmt waren;

The Jews ordained and took it upon themselves and their descendants and all who joined them that without fail every year they would keep these two days at the appointed time and as it was written,

28 d aß diese Tage nicht vergessen, sondern zu halten seien bei Kindeskindern, bei allen Geschlechtern, in allen Ländern und Städten. Es sind die Tage Purim, welche nicht sollen übergangen werden unter den Juden, und ihr Gedächtnis soll nicht umkommen bei ihren Nachkommen.

That these days should be remembered (imprinted on their minds) and kept throughout every generation in every family, province, and city, and that these days of Purim should never cease from among the Jews, nor the commemoration of them cease among their descendants.

29 U nd die Königin Esther, die Tochter Abihails, und Mardochai, der Jude, schrieben mit ganzem Ernst, um es zu bestätigen, diesen zweiten Brief von Purim;

Then Queen Esther, the daughter of Abihail, with Mordecai the Jew, gave full power, confirming this second letter about Purim.

30 u nd er sandte die Briefe zu allen Juden in den hundert und siebenundzwanzig Ländern des Königreichs des Ahasveros mit freundlichen und treuen Worten:

And letters were sent to all the Jews, to the 127 provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus, in words of peace and truth,

31 d aß sie annähmen die Tage Purim auf die bestimmte Zeit, wie Mardochai, der Jude, über sie bestätigt hatte und die Königin Esther, und wie sie für sich selbst und ihre Nachkommen bestätigt hatten die Geschichte der Fasten und ihres Schreiens.

To confirm that these days of Purim should be observed at their appointed times, as Mordecai the Jew and Queen Esther had commanded, and as they had ordained for themselves and for their descendants in the matter of their fasts and their lamenting.

32 U nd Esther befahl, die Geschichte dieser Purim zu bestätigen. Und es ward in ein Buch geschrieben.

And the command of Esther confirmed these observances of Purim, and it was written in the book.
