1 ( Eine Unterweisung Asaphs.) Gott, warum verstößest du uns so gar und bist so grimmig zornig über die Schafe deiner Weide?

O God, why do You cast us off forever? Why does Your anger burn and smoke against the sheep of Your pasture?

2 G edenke an deine Gemeinde, die du vor alters erworben und dir zum Erbteil erlöst hast, an den Berg Zion, darauf du wohnest.

remember Your congregation which You have acquired of old, which You have redeemed to be the tribe of Your heritage; remember Mount Zion, where You have dwelt.

3 H ebe deine Schritte zum dem, was so lange wüst liegt. Der Feind hat alles verderbt im Heiligtum.

Direct Your feet to the perpetual ruins and desolations; the foe has devastated and desecrated everything in the sanctuary.

4 D eine Widersacher brüllen in deinen Häusern und setzen ihre Götzen darein.

In the midst of Your Holy Place Your enemies have roared; they set up their own emblems for signs.

5 M an sieht die Äxte obenher blinken, wie man in einen Wald haut;

They seemed like men who lifted up axes upon a thicket of trees to make themselves a record.

6 s ie zerhauen alle seine Tafelwerke mit Beil und Barte.

And then all the carved wood of the Holy Place they broke down with hatchets and hammers.

7 S ie verbrennen dein Heiligtum; sie entweihen und werfen zu Boden die Wohnung deines Namens.

They have set Your sanctuary on fire; they have profaned the dwelling place of Your Name by casting it to the ground.

8 S ie sprechen in ihrem Herzen; "Laßt uns sie plündern!" Sie verbrennen alle Häuser Gottes im Lande.

They said in their hearts, Let us make havoc altogether. They have burned up all God’s meetinghouses in the land.

9 U nsere Zeichen sehen wir nicht, und kein Prophet predigt mehr, und keiner ist bei uns, der weiß, wie lange.

We do not see our symbols; there is no longer any prophet, neither does any among us know for how long.

10 A ch Gott, wie lange soll der Widersacher schmähen und der Feind deinen Namen so gar verlästern?

O God, how long is the adversary to scoff and reproach? Is the enemy to blaspheme and revile Your name forever?

11 W arum wendest du deine Hand ab? Ziehe von deinem Schoß dein Rechte und mache ein Ende.

Why do You hold back Your hand, even Your right hand? Draw it out of Your bosom and consume them!

12 G ott ist ja mein König von alters her, der alle Hilfe tut, die auf Erden geschieht.

Yet God is my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth.

13 D u zertrennst das Meer durch dein Kraft und zerbrichst die Köpfe der Drachen im Wasser.

You did divide the Sea by Your might; You broke the heads of the dragons in the waters.

14 D u zerschlägst die Köpfe der Walfische und gibst sie zur Speise dem Volk in der Einöde.

You crushed the heads of Leviathan (Egypt); You did give him as food for the creatures inhabiting the wilderness.

15 D u lässest quellen Brunnen und Bäche; du läßt versiegen starke Ströme.

You did cleave open fountains and streams; You dried up mighty, ever-flowing rivers (the Jordan).

16 T ag und Nacht ist dein; du machst, daß Sonne und Gestirn ihren gewissen Lauf haben.

The day is Yours, the night also is Yours; You have established the light and the sun.

17 D u setzest einem jeglichen Lande seine Grenze; Sommer und Winter machst du.

You have fixed all the borders of the earth; You have made summer and winter.

18 S o gedenke doch des, daß der Feind den HERRN schmäht und ein töricht Volk lästert deinen Namen.

remember how the enemy has scoffed, O Lord, and reproached You, and how a foolish and impious people has blasphemed Your name.

19 D u wollest nicht dem Tier geben die Seele deiner Turteltaube, und der Herde deiner Elenden nicht so gar vergessen.

Oh, do not deliver the life of your turtledove to the wild beast (to the greedy multitude); forget not the life of Your poor forever.

20 G edenke an den Bund; denn das Land ist allenthalben jämmerlich verheert, und die Häuser sind zerrissen.

Have regard for the covenant, for the dark places of the land are full of the habitations of violence.

21 L aß den Geringen nicht in Schanden davongehen; laß die Armen und Elenden rühmen deinen Namen.

Oh, let not the downtrodden return in shame; let the oppressed and needy praise Your name.

22 M ache dich auf, Gott, und führe aus deine Sache; gedenke an die Schmach, die dir täglich von den Toren widerfährt.

Arise, O God, plead Your own cause; remember how the foolish and impious man scoffs and reproaches You day after day and all day long.

23 V ergiß nicht des Geschreis deiner Feinde; das Toben deiner Widersacher wird je länger, je größer.

Do not forget the voices of Your adversaries, the tumult of those who rise up against You, which ascends continually.
