1 O uvi isto, vós todos os povos; inclinai os ouvidos, todos os habitantes do mundo,

Hear this, all you peoples; give ear, all you inhabitants of the world,

2 q uer humildes quer grandes, tanto ricos como pobres.

Both low and high, rich and poor together:

3 A minha boca falará a sabedoria, e a meditação do meu coração será de entendimento.

My mouth shall speak wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be understanding.

4 I nclinarei os meus ouvidos a uma parábola; decifrarei o meu enigma ao som da harpa.

I will submit and consent to a parable or proverb; to the music of a lyre I will unfold my riddle (my problem).

5 P or que temeria eu nos dias da adversidade, ao cercar-me a iniqüidade dos meus perseguidores,

Why should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of those who would supplant me surrounds me on every side,

6 d os que confiam nos seus bens e se gloriam na multidão das suas riquezas?

Even of those who trust in and lean on their wealth and boast of the abundance of their riches?

7 N enhum deles de modo algum pode remir a seu irmão, nem por ele dar um resgate a Deus,

None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him—

8 ( pois a redenção da sua vida é caríssima, de sorte que os seus recursos não dariam;)

For the ransom of a life is too costly, and can never suffice—

9 p ara que continuasse a viver para sempre, e não visse a cova.

So that he should live on forever and never see the pit (the grave) and corruption.

10 S im, ele verá que até os sábios morrem, que perecem igualmente o néscio e o estúpido, e deixam a outros os seus bens.

For he sees that even wise men die; the fool and the stupid alike perish and leave their wealth to others.

11 O pensamento íntimo deles é que as suas casas são perpétuas e as suas habitações de geração em geração; dão

Their inward thought is that their houses will continue forever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands their own and after their own names.

12 M as o homem, embora esteja em honra, não permanece; antes é como os animais que perecem.

But man, with all his honor and pomp, does not remain; he is like the beasts that perish.

13 E ste é o destino dos que confiam em si mesmos; o fim dos que se satisfazem com as suas próprias palavras.

This is the fate of those who are foolishly confident, yet after them men approve their sayings. Selah!

14 C omo ovelhas são arrebanhados ao Seol; a morte os pastoreia; ao romper do dia os retos terão domínio sobre eles; e a sua formosura se consumirá no Seol, que lhes será por habitação.

Like sheep they are appointed for Sheol (the place of the dead); death shall be their shepherd. And the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their form and beauty shall be consumed, for Sheol shall be their dwelling.

15 M as Deus remirá a minha alma do poder do Seol, pois me receberá.

But God will redeem me from the power of Sheol (the place of the dead); for He will receive me. Selah!

16 N ão temas quando alguém se enriquece, quando a glória da sua casa aumenta.

Be not afraid when one is made rich, when the wealth and glory of his house are increased;

17 P ois, quando morrer, nada levará consigo; a sua glória não descerá após ele.

For when he dies he will carry nothing away; his glory will not descend after him.

18 A inda que ele, enquanto vivo, se considera feliz e os homens o louvam quando faz o bem a si mesmo,

Though while he lives he counts himself happy and prosperous, and though a man gets praise when he does well,

19 e le irá ter com a geração de seus pais; eles nunca mais verão a luz

He will go to the generation of his fathers, who will nevermore see the light.

20 M as o homem, embora esteja em honra, não permanece; antes é como os animais que perecem.

A man who is held in honor and understands not is like the beasts that perish.
