1 ( 49: 1) Au chef des chantres. Des fils de Koré. Psaume. (49: 2) Écoutez ceci, vous tous, peuples, Prêtez l'oreille, vous tous, habitants du monde,

Hear this, all you peoples; give ear, all you inhabitants of the world,

2 ( 49: 3) Petits et grands, Riches et pauvres!

Both low and high, rich and poor together:

3 ( 49: 4) Ma bouche va faire entendre des paroles sages, Et mon coeur a des pensées pleines de sens.

My mouth shall speak wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be understanding.

4 ( 49: 5) Je prête l'oreille aux sentences qui me sont inspirées, J'ouvre mon chant au son de la harpe.

I will submit and consent to a parable or proverb; to the music of a lyre I will unfold my riddle (my problem).

5 ( 49: 6) Pourquoi craindrais-je aux jours du malheur, Lorsque l'iniquité de mes adversaires m'enveloppe?

Why should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of those who would supplant me surrounds me on every side,

6 ( 49: 7) Ils ont confiance en leurs biens, Et se glorifient de leur grande richesse.

Even of those who trust in and lean on their wealth and boast of the abundance of their riches?

7 ( 49: 8) Ils ne peuvent se racheter l'un l'autre, Ni donner à Dieu le prix du rachat.

None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him—

8 ( 49: 9) Le rachat de leur âme est cher, Et n'aura jamais lieu;

For the ransom of a life is too costly, and can never suffice—

9 ( 49: 10) Ils ne vivront pas toujours, Ils n'éviteront pas la vue de la fosse.

So that he should live on forever and never see the pit (the grave) and corruption.

10 ( 49: 11) Car ils la verront: les sages meurent, L'insensé et le stupide périssent également, Et ils laissent à d'autres leurs biens.

For he sees that even wise men die; the fool and the stupid alike perish and leave their wealth to others.

11 ( 49: 12) Ils s'imaginent que leurs maisons seront éternelles, Que leurs demeures subsisteront d'âge en âge, Eux dont les noms sont honorés sur la terre.

Their inward thought is that their houses will continue forever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands their own and after their own names.

12 ( 49: 13) Mais l'homme qui est en honneur n'a point de durée, Il est semblable aux bêtes que l'on égorge.

But man, with all his honor and pomp, does not remain; he is like the beasts that perish.

13 ( 49: 14) Telle est leur voie, leur folie, Et ceux qui les suivent se plaisent à leurs discours. -Pause.

This is the fate of those who are foolishly confident, yet after them men approve their sayings. Selah!

14 ( 49: 15) Comme un troupeau, ils sont mis dans le séjour des morts, La mort en fait sa pâture; Et bientôt les hommes droits les foulent aux pieds, Leur beauté s'évanouit, le séjour des morts est leur demeure.

Like sheep they are appointed for Sheol (the place of the dead); death shall be their shepherd. And the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their form and beauty shall be consumed, for Sheol shall be their dwelling.

15 ( 49: 16) Mais Dieu sauvera mon âme du séjour des morts, Car il me prendra sous sa protection. -Pause.

But God will redeem me from the power of Sheol (the place of the dead); for He will receive me. Selah!

16 ( 49: 17) Ne sois pas dans la crainte parce qu'un homme s'enrichit, Parce que les trésors de sa maison se multiplient;

Be not afraid when one is made rich, when the wealth and glory of his house are increased;

17 ( 49: 18) Car il n'emporte rien en mourant, Ses trésors ne descendent point après lui.

For when he dies he will carry nothing away; his glory will not descend after him.

18 ( 49: 19) Il aura beau s'estimer heureux pendant sa vie, On aura beau te louer des jouissances que tu te donnes,

Though while he lives he counts himself happy and prosperous, and though a man gets praise when he does well,

19 ( 49: 20) Tu iras néanmoins au séjour de tes pères, Qui jamais ne reverront la lumière.

He will go to the generation of his fathers, who will nevermore see the light.

20 ( 49: 21) L'homme qui est en honneur, et qui n'a pas d'intelligence, Est semblable aux bêtes que l'on égorge.

A man who is held in honor and understands not is like the beasts that perish.
