1 L a parole de l'Éternel me fut adressée, en ces mots:

And the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

2 F ils de l'homme, le bois de la vigne, qu'a-t-il de plus que tout autre bois, Le sarment qui est parmi les arbres de la forêt?

Son of man, How is the wood of the grapevine more than that of any tree, the vine branch which was among the trees of the forest?

3 P rend-on de ce bois pour fabriquer un ouvrage? En tire-t-on une cheville pour y suspendre un objet quelconque?

Shall wood be taken from it to do any work? Or will men take a peg of it on which to hang any vessel?

4 V oici, on le met au feu pour le consumer; Le feu en consume les deux bouts, et le milieu brûle: Sera-t-il bon à quelque chose?

Behold, it is cast into the fire for fuel; the fire consumes both ends of it and the middle of it is charred. Is it suitable or profitable for any work?

5 V oici, lorsqu'il était entier, on n'en faisait aucun ouvrage; Combien moins, lorsque le feu l'a consumé et qu'il est brûlé, En pourra-t-on faire quelque ouvrage?

Notice, even when it was whole, it was good for no work; how much less shall it be useful and profitable when the fire has devoured it and it is charred?

6 C 'est pourquoi ainsi parle le Seigneur, l'Éternel: Comme le bois de la vigne parmi les arbres de la forêt, Ce bois que je livre au feu pour le consumer, Ainsi je livrerai les habitants de Jérusalem.

Therefore thus says the Lord God: Like the wood of the grapevine among the trees of the forest, which I have given to the fire for fuel, so will I give up the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

7 J e tournerai ma face contre eux; Ils sont sortis du feu, et le feu les consumera. Et vous saurez que je suis l'Éternel, Quand je tournerai ma face contre eux.

And I will set My face against them; they shall go out from one fire and another fire shall devour them, and you shall know (understand and realize) that I am the Lord, when I set My face against them.

8 J e ferai du pays un désert, Parce qu'ils ont été infidèles, Dit le Seigneur, l'Éternel.

And I will make the land desolate (laid waste and deserted) because they have acted faithlessly, says the Lord.
