1 N a verdade, há minas donde se extrai a prata, e também lugar onde se refina o ouro:

Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place for gold where they refine it.

2 O ferro tira-se da terra, e da pedra se funde o cobre.

Iron is taken out of the earth, and copper is smelted from the stone ore.

3 O s homens põem termo

Man sets an end to darkness, and he searches out the farthest bounds for the ore buried in gloom and deep darkness.

4 A brem um poço de mina longe do lugar onde habitam; são esquecidos pelos viajantes, ficando pendentes longe dos homens, e oscilam de um lado para o outro.

Men break open shafts away from where people sojourn, in places forgotten by foot; and, hanging afar from men, they swing or flit to and fro.

5 Q uanto ã terra, dela procede o pão, mas por baixo é revolvida como por fogo.

As for the earth, out of it comes bread, but underneath there is blasting, turning it up as by fire.

6 A s suas pedras são o lugar de safiras, e têm pó de ouro.

Its stones are the bed of sapphires; it holds dust of gold.

7 A ave de rapina não conhece essa vereda, e não a viram os olhos do falcão.

That path no bird of prey knows, and the falcon’s eye has not seen it.

8 N unca a pisaram feras altivas, nem o feroz leão passou por ela.

The proud beasts have not trodden it, nor has the fierce lion passed over it.

9 O homem estende a mão contra a pederneira, e revolve os montes desde as suas raízes.

Man puts forth his hand upon the flinty rock; he overturns the mountains by the roots.

10 C orta canais nas pedras, e os seus olhos descobrem todas as coisas preciosas.

He cuts out channels and passages among the rocks; and his eye sees every precious thing.

11 E le tapa os veios d'água para que não gotejem; e tira para a luz o que estava escondido.

binds the streams so that they do not trickle, and the thing that is hidden he brings forth to light.

12 M as onde se achará a sabedoria? E onde está o lugar do entendimento?

But where shall Wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?

13 O homem não lhe conhece o caminho; nem se acha ela na terra dos viventes.

Man knows not the price of it; neither is it found in the land of the living.

14 O abismo diz: Não está em mim; e o mar diz: Ela não está comigo.

The deep says, is not in me; and the sea says, It is not with me.

15 N ão pode ser comprada com ouro fino, nem a peso de prata se trocará.

It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price of it.

16 N em se pode avaliar em ouro fino de Ofir, nem em pedras preciosas de berilo, ou safira.

It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir, in the precious onyx or beryl, or the sapphire.

17 C om ela não se pode comparar o ouro ou o vidro; nem se trocara por jóias de ouro fino.

Gold and glass cannot equal, nor can it be exchanged for jewels or vessels of fine gold.

18 N ão se fará menção de coral nem de cristal; porque a aquisição da sabedoria é melhor que a das pérolas.

No mention shall be made of coral or of crystal; for the possession of Wisdom is even above rubies or pearls.

19 N ão se lhe igualará o topázio da Etiópia, nem se pode comprar por ouro puro.

The topaz of Ethiopia cannot compare with it, nor can it be valued in pure gold.

20 D onde, pois, vem a sabedoria? Onde está o lugar do entendimento?

From where then does Wisdom come? And where is the place of understanding?

21 E stá encoberta aos olhos de todo vivente, e oculta

It is hidden from the eyes of all living, and knowledge of it is withheld from the birds of the heavens.

22 O Abadom e a morte dizem: Ouvimos com os nossos ouvidos um rumor dela.

Abaddon (the place of destruction) and Death say, We have heard the report of it with our ears.

23 D eus entende o seu caminho, e ele sabe o seu lugar.

God understands the way and He knows the place of it.

24 P orque ele perscruta até as extremidades da terra, sim, ele vê tudo o que há debaixo do céu.

For He looks to the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens.

25 Q uando regulou o peso do vento, e fixou a medida das águas;

When He gave to the wind weight or pressure and allotted the waters by measure,

26 q uando prescreveu leis para a chuva e caminho para o relâmpago dos trovões;

When He made a decree for the rain and a way for the lightning of the thunder,

27 e ntão viu a sabedoria e a manifestou; estabeleceu-a, e também a esquadrinhou.

Then He saw and declared it; He established it, yes, and searched it out.

28 E disse ao homem: Eis que o temor do Senhor é a sabedoria, e o apartar-se do mal é o entendimento.

But to man He said, Behold, the reverential and worshipful fear of the Lord—that is Wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.
