1 A rgintul are o mină de unde se scoate, şi aurul are un loc de unde este scos ca să fie curăţit.

Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place for gold where they refine it.

2 F erul se scoate din pămînt, şi piatra se topeşte ca să dea arama.

Iron is taken out of the earth, and copper is smelted from the stone ore.

3 O mul pune capăt întunerecului, cercetează, pînă în ţinuturile cele mai adînci, pietrele ascunse în negura şi în umbra morţii.

Man sets an end to darkness, and he searches out the farthest bounds for the ore buried in gloom and deep darkness.

4 S apă o fîntînă departe de locurile locuite; picioarele nu -i mai sînt de ajutor, stă atîrnat şi se clatină, departe de locuinţele omeneşti.

Men break open shafts away from where people sojourn, in places forgotten by foot; and, hanging afar from men, they swing or flit to and fro.

5 P ămîntul, de unde iese pînea, este răscolit în lăuntrul lui ca de foc,

As for the earth, out of it comes bread, but underneath there is blasting, turning it up as by fire.

6 p ietrele lui cuprind safir, şi în el se găseşte pulbere de aur.

Its stones are the bed of sapphires; it holds dust of gold.

7 P asărea de pradă nu -i cunoaşte cărarea. Ochiul vulturului n'a zărit -o,

That path no bird of prey knows, and the falcon’s eye has not seen it.

8 c ele mai trufaşe dobitoace n'au călcat pe ea, şi leul n'a trecut niciodată pe ea.

The proud beasts have not trodden it, nor has the fierce lion passed over it.

9 O mul îşi pune mîna pe stînca de cremene, şi răstoarnă munţii din rădăcină.

Man puts forth his hand upon the flinty rock; he overturns the mountains by the roots.

10 S apă şanţuri în stînci, şi ochiul lui priveşte tot ce este de preţ în ele.

He cuts out channels and passages among the rocks; and his eye sees every precious thing.

11 O preşte curgerea apelor, şi scoate la lumină ce este ascuns.

binds the streams so that they do not trickle, and the thing that is hidden he brings forth to light.

12 D ar înţelepciunea unde se găseşte? Unde este locuinţa priceperii?

But where shall Wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?

13 O mul nu -i cunoaşte preţul, ea nu se găseşte în pămîntul celor vii.

Man knows not the price of it; neither is it found in the land of the living.

14 A dîncul zice:, Nu este în mine`, şi marea zice:, Nu este la mine.`;

The deep says, is not in me; and the sea says, It is not with me.

15 E a nu se dă în schimbul aurului curat, nu se cumpără cîntărindu-se cu argint;

It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price of it.

16 n u se cîntăreşte pe aurul din Ofir, nici pe onixul cel scump, nici pe safir.

It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir, in the precious onyx or beryl, or the sapphire.

17 N u se poate asemăna cu aurul, nici cu diamantul, nu se poate schimba cu un vas de aur ales.

Gold and glass cannot equal, nor can it be exchanged for jewels or vessels of fine gold.

18 M ărgeanul şi cristalul nu sînt nimic pe lîngă ea: înţelepciunea preţuieşte mai mult decît mărgăritarele.

No mention shall be made of coral or of crystal; for the possession of Wisdom is even above rubies or pearls.

19 T opazul din Etiopia nu este ca ea, şi aurul curat nu se cumpăneşte cu ea.

The topaz of Ethiopia cannot compare with it, nor can it be valued in pure gold.

20 D e unde vine atunci înţelepciunea? Unde este locuinţa priceperii?

From where then does Wisdom come? And where is the place of understanding?

21 E ste ascunsă de ochii tuturor celor vii, este ascunsă de păsările cerului.

It is hidden from the eyes of all living, and knowledge of it is withheld from the birds of the heavens.

22 A dîncul şi moartea zic:, Noi am auzit vorbindu-se de ea.`

Abaddon (the place of destruction) and Death say, We have heard the report of it with our ears.

23 D umnezeu îi ştie drumul, El îi cunoaşte locuinţa.

God understands the way and He knows the place of it.

24 C ăci El vede pînă la marginile pămîntului, zăreşte totul subt ceruri.

For He looks to the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens.

25 C înd a rînduit greutatea vîntului, şi cînd a hotărît măsura apelor,

When He gave to the wind weight or pressure and allotted the waters by measure,

26 c înd a dat legi ploii, şi cînd a însemnat drumul fulgerului şi tunetului,

When He made a decree for the rain and a way for the lightning of the thunder,

27 a tunci a văzut înţelepciunea şi a arătat -o, i -a pus temeliile şi a pus -o la încercare.

Then He saw and declared it; He established it, yes, and searched it out.

28 A poi a zis omului:, Iată, frica de Domnul, aceasta este înţelepciunea; depărtarea de rău, este pricepere.`

But to man He said, Behold, the reverential and worshipful fear of the Lord—that is Wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.
