1 D avid s'a dus la Nob, la preotul Ahimelec, care a alergat speriat înaintea lui, şi i -a zis:,, Pentruce eşti singur şi nu este nimeni cu tine?``

Then David went to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest; and Ahimelech was afraid at meeting David, and said to him, Why are you alone and no man with you?

2 D avid a răspuns preotului Ahimelec:,,Împăratul mi -a dat o poruncă şi mi -a zis:, Nimeni să nu ştie nimic de pricina pentru care te trimet şi de porunca pe care ţi-am dat -o.` Am hotărît un loc de întîlnire cu oamenii mei.

David said to Ahimelech the priest, The king has charged me with a matter and has told me, Let no man know anything of the mission on which I send you and with what I have charged you. I have appointed the young men to a certain place.

3 A cum ce ai la îndemînă? Dă-mi cinci pîni, sau ce se va găsi.``

Now what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread, or whatever you may have.

4 P reotul a răspuns lui David:,, N-am pîne obicinuită la îndemnă, ci numai pîne sfinţită; doar dacă oamenii tăi s'au ferit de împreunarea cu femei!``

And the priest answered David, There is no common bread on hand, but there is hallowed bread—if the young men have kept themselves at least from women.

5 D avid a răspuns preotului:,, Ne-am ferit de împreunarea cu femei de trei zile decînd am plecat, şi toţi oamenii mei sînt curaţi; de altfel, dacă aceasta este o faptă necurată, va fi sfinţită negreşt azi de acela care o va face.``

And David told the priest, Truly women have been kept from us in these three days since I came out, and the food bags and utensils of the young men are clean, and although the bread will be used in a secular way, it will be set apart in the clean bags.

6 A tunci preotul i -a dat pînea sfinţită, căci nu era acolo altă pîne decît pînea pentru punerea înainte, care fusese luată dinaintea Domnului ca să fie înlocuită cu pîne caldă, în clipa cînd luaseră pe cealaltă.

So the priest gave him holy bread, for there was no bread there but the showbread which was taken from before the Lord to put hot bread in its place the day when it was taken away.

7 C hiar în ziua aceea, se afla acolo închis înaintea Domnului un om dintre slujitorii lui Saul; era un Edomit, numit Doeg, căpetenia păstorilor lui Saul.

Now a certain man of Saul’s servants was there that day, detained before the Lord; his name was Doeg the Edomite, the chief of Saul’s herdsmen.

8 D avid a zis lui Ahimelec:,, N'ai la îndemînă o suliţă sau o sabie? Căci nu mi-am luat cu mine nici sabia nici armele, pentrucă porunca împăratului era grabnică.``

David said to Ahimelech, Do you have at hand a sword or spear? The king’s business required haste, and I brought neither my sword nor my weapons with me.

9 P reotul a răspuns:,, Iată sabia lui Goliat, Filisteanul, pe care l-ai omorît în valea terebinţilor; este învelită într'un covor, în dosul efodului; dacă vrei s'o iei, ia -o, căci nu este alta aici.`` Şi David a zis:,, Nu -i alta ca ea; dă-mi -o.``

The priest said, The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you slew in the Valley of Elah, see, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod; if you will take that, do so, for there is no other here. And David said, There is none like that; give it to me.

10 D avid s'a sculat şi a fugit chiar în ziua aceea de Saul. A ajuns la Achiş, împăratul Gatului.

David arose and fled that day from Saul and went to Achish king of Gath.

11 S lujitorii lui Achiş i-au zis:,, Nu este acesta David, împăratul ţării? Nu este el acela pentru care se cînta, jucînd:, Saul şi -a bătut miile lui, Iar David zecile lui de mii?``

The servants of Achish said to him, Is not this David, the king of the land? Did they not sing one to another of him in their dances: Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands?

12 D avid a pus la inimă aceste cuvinte, şi a avut o mare frică de Achiş, împăratul Gatului.

David took these words to heart and was much afraid of Achish king of Gath.

13 A făcut pe nebunul înaintea lor; făcea năzdrăvănii înaintea lor, făcea zgîrîieturi pe uşile porţilor, şi lăsa să -i curgă balele pe barbă.

And he changed his behavior before them, and pretended to be insane in their hands, and scribbled on the gate doors, and drooled on his beard.

14 A chiş a zis slujitorilor săi:,, Vedeţi bine că omul acesta şi -a pierdut minţile; pentruce mi -l aduceţi?

Then said Achish to his servants, You see the man is mad. Why then have you brought him to me?

15 O are duc lipsă de nebuni, de-mi aduceţi pe acesta şi mă faceţi martor la năzdrăvăniile lui? Să intre el în casa mea?``

Have I need of madmen, that you bring this fellow to play the madman in my presence? Shall this fellow come into my house?
