My son, keep my words; lay up within you my commandments and treasure them.

2 Ţ ine sfaturile mele, şi vei trăi; păzeşte învăţăturile mele ca lumina ochilor.

Keep my commandments and live, and keep my law and teaching as the apple (the pupil) of your eye.

3 L eagă-le la degete, scrie-le pe tăbliţa inimii tale.

Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.

4 Z i înţelepciunii:,, Tu eşti sora mea!`` Şi numeşte priceperea prietena ta, -

Say to skillful and godly Wisdom, You are my sister, and regard understanding or insight as your intimate friend—

5 c a să te ferească de nevasta altuia, de străina care întrebuinţează cuvinte ademenitoare.

That they may keep you from the loose woman, from the adventuress who flatters with and makes smooth her words.

6 S tăteam la fereastra casei mele, şi mă uitam prin zăbrele.

For at the window of my house I looked out through my lattice.

7 A m zărit printre cei neîncercaţi, am văzut printre tineri pe un băiat fără minte.

And among the simple (empty-headed and emptyhearted) ones, I perceived among the youths a young man void of good sense,

8 T recea pe uliţă, la colţul unde stătea una din aceste străine, şi a apucat pe calea care ducea spre locuinţa ei.

Sauntering through the street near the corner; and he went the way to her house

9 E ra în amurg, seara, în noaptea neagră şi întunecoasă.

In the twilight, in the evening; night black and dense was falling.

10 Ş i, iată că, i -a alergat înainte o femeie îmbrăcată ca o curvă şi cu inima şireată.

And behold, there met him a woman, dressed as a harlot and sly and cunning of heart.

11 E ra bună de gură şi fără astîmpăr; picioarele nu -i puteau sta acasă:

She is turbulent and willful; her feet stay not in her house;

12 c înd în uliţă, cînd în pieţe, pela toate colţurile stătea la pîndă.

Now in the streets, now in the marketplaces, she sets her ambush at every corner.

13 E a l -a îmbrăţişat şi l -a sărutat, şi cu o faţă fără ruşine i -a zis:

So she caught him and kissed him and with impudent face she said to him,

14 E ram datoare cu o jertfă de mulţămire, azi mi-am împlinit juruinţele.

Sacrifices of peace offerings were due from me; this day I paid my vows.

15 D e aceea ţi-am ieşit înainte, să te caut, şi te-am şi găsit.

So I came forth to meet you; diligently I sought your face, and I have found you.

16 M i-am împodobit patul cu învelitori, cu aşternut de pînzeturi din Egipt;

I have spread my couch with rugs and cushions of tapestry, with striped sheets of fine linen of Egypt.

17 m i-am stropit aşternutul cu smirnă, aloe şi scorţişoară.

I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.

18 V ino, să ne îmbătăm de dragoste pînă dimineaţă, să ne desfătăm cu desmierdări!

Come, let us take our fill of love until morning; let us console and delight ourselves with love.

19 C ăci bărbatul meu nu este acasă, a plecat într'o călătorie lungă,

For the man is not at home; he is gone on a long journey;

20 a luat cu el sacul cu bani, şi nu se va întoarce acasă decît la luna nouă.``

He has taken a bag of money with him and will come home at the day appointed.

21 T ot vorbindu -i, ea l -a ademenit, şi l -a atras cu buzele ei ademenitoare.

With much justifying and enticing argument she persuades him, with the allurements of her lips she leads him and forces him along.

22 D e odată a început să meargă după ea, ca boul care se duce la măcelărie, ca un cerb care aleargă spre cursă,

Suddenly he follows her reluctantly like an ox moving to the slaughter, like one in fetters going to the correction to a fool or like a dog enticed by food to the muzzle

23 c a pasărea care dă buzna în laţ, fără să ştie că o va costa viaţa, pînă ce săgeata îi străpunge ficatul.

Till a dart pierces and inflames his vitals; then like a bird fluttering straight into the net, not knowing that it will cost him his life.

24 Ş i acum, fiilor, ascultaţi-mă, şi luaţi aminte la cuvintele gurii mele.

Listen to me now therefore, O you sons, and be attentive to the words of my mouth.

25 S ă nu ţi se abată inima spre calea unei asemenea femei, nu te rătăci pe cărările ei.

Let not your heart incline toward her ways, do not stray into her paths.

26 C ăci ea a făcut să cadă multe jertfe, şi mulţi sînt cei pe cari i -a ucis ea.

For she has cast down many wounded; indeed, all her slain are a mighty host.

27 C asa ei este drumul spre locuinţa morţilor, drumul care pogoară spre locaşurile morţii.

Her house is the way to Sheol (Hades, the place of the dead), going down to the chambers of death.
