1 E lifaz din Teman a luat cuvîntul, şi a zis:

Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered,

2 S e cade să dea înţeleptul ca răspuns înţelepciune deşartă? Sau să-şi umfle pieptul cu vînt de răsărit?

Should a wise man utter such windy knowledge and fill himself with the east wind ?

3 S ă se apere prin cuvinte cari n'ajută la nimic, şi prin cuvîntări cari nu slujesc la nimic?

Should he reason with unprofitable talk? Or with speeches with which he can do no good?

4 T u nimiceşti chiar şi frica de Dumnezeu, nimiceşti orice simţire de evlavie faţă de Dumnezeu.

Indeed, you are doing away with fear, and you are hindering and diminishing meditation and devotion before God.

5 N elegiuirea ta îţi cîrmuieşte gura, şi împrumuţi vorbirea oamenilor vicleni.

For your iniquity teaches your mouth, and you choose the tongue of the crafty.

6 N u eu, ci gura ta te osîndeşte, buzele tale mărturisesc împotriva ta.

Your own mouth condemns you, and not I; yes, your own lips testify against you.

7 T u eşti omul care s'a născut întîi? Te-ai născut tu înaintea dealurilor?

Are you the first man that was born ? Or were you created before the hills?

8 A i fost tu la sfaturile lui Dumnezeu; şi ai sorbit din ele înţelepciune pentru tine?

Were you present to hear the secret counsel of God? And do you limit wisdom to yourself?

9 C e ştii tu şi să nu ştim şi noi? Ce cunoştinţă ai tu pe care să n'o avem şi noi?

What do you know that we know not? What do you understand that is not equally clear to us?

10 Î ntre noi sînt peri albi, bătrîni, oameni mai înziliţi decît tatăl tău.

Among us are both the gray-haired and the aged, older than your father by far.

11 P uţin lucru sînt mîngîierile lui Dumnezeu pentru tine, şi cuvintele cari-ţi vorbesc atît de blînd?...

Are God’s consolations too trivial for you? Is there any secret thing (any bosom sin) which you have not given up? were we too gentle toward you to be effective?

12 Î ncotro te trage inima, şi ce înseamnă această privire ţintă a ochilor tăi?

Why does your heart carry you away ? And why do your eyes flash,

13 C e! împotriva lui Dumnezeu îţi îndrepţi tu mînia, şi-ţi ies din gură cuvinte ca acestea?

That you turn your spirit against God and let words go out of your mouth?

14 C e este omul, ca să fie curat? Şi poate cel născut din femeie să fie fără prihană?

What is man, that he could be pure and clean? And he who is born of a woman, that he could be right and just?

15 D acă n'are încredere Dumnezeu nici în sfinţii Săi, dacă nici cerurile nu sînt curate înaintea Lui,

Behold, puts no trust in His holy ones; indeed, the heavens are not clean in His sight—

16 c u cît mai puţin fiinţa urîcioasă şi stricată-omul, care bea nelegiuirea ca apa!

How much less that which is abominable and corrupt, a man who drinks iniquity like water?

17 V reau să te învăţ, ascultă-mă! Voi istorisi ce am văzut,

I will show you, hear me; and that which I have seen I will relate,

18 c e au arătat înţelepţii, ce au descoperit ei, auzind dela părinţii lor,

What wise men have not hid but have freely communicated; it was told to them by their fathers,

19 c ărora singuri li se dăduse ţara, şi printre cari nici un străin nu venise încă.

Unto whom alone the land was given, and no stranger intruded or passed among them.

20 O mul cel rău îşi duce în nelinişte toate zilele vieţii, toţi anii de cari are parte cel nelegiuit.

The wicked man suffers with torment all his days, through all the years that are numbered and laid up for him, the oppressor.

21 Ţ ipete de spaimă răsună la urechile lui: În mijlocul fericirii lui, pustiitorul se va arunca asupra lui.

A sound of terrors is in his ears; in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.

22 E l nu trage nădejde să scape de întunerec, vede sabia care -l ameninţă;

He believes that he will not return out of darkness, and he is waited for by the sword.

23 a leargă încoace şi încolo să caute pîne, ştie că -l aşteaptă ziua întunerecului.

He wanders abroad for food, saying, Where is it? He knows that the day of darkness and destruction is already close upon him.

24 N ecazul şi neliniştea îl înspăimîntă, şi se aruncă asupra lui ca un împărat gata de luptă.

Distress and anguish terrify him; they shall prevail against him, like a king ready for battle.

25 C ăci a ridicat mîna împotriva lui Dumnezeu, s'a împotrivit Celui Atot Puternic,

Because he has stretched out his hand against God and bids defiance and behaves himself proudly against the Almighty,

26 ş i a avut îndrăzneala să se năpustească asupra Lui cu partea cea mai tare a scuturilor lui.

Running stubbornly against Him with a thickly ornamented shield;

27 A vea faţa acoperită cu grăsime, coapsele încărcate cu osînză,

Because he has covered his face with his fat, adding layers of fat on his loins,

28 ş i locuia în cetăţi nimicite, în case părăsite, sortite să fie dărîmate.

And has lived in desolate cities and in houses which no man should inhabit, which were destined to become heaps;

29 N u se va mai îmbogăţi, averea nu -i va creşte, şi avuţia nu se va mai întinde pe pămînt.

He shall not be rich, neither shall his wealth last, neither shall his produce bend to the earth nor his possessions be extended on the earth.

30 N u va putea ieşi din întunerec, flacăra îi va arde mlădiţele, şi Dumnezeu îl va pierde cu suflarea gurii Lui.

He shall not depart out of darkness shall consume him as flame consumes a dry tree, and by the blast of His mouth he shall be swept away.

31 D acă se încrede în rău, se înşeală, căci răul îi va fi răsplata.

Let him not deceive himself and trust in vanity (emptiness, falseness, and futility), for these shall be his recompense.

32 E a va veni înainte de capătul zilelor lui, şi ramura lui nu va mai înverzi.

It shall be accomplished and paid in full while he still lives, and his branch shall not be green.

33 V a fi ca o viţă despoiată de roadele ei încă verzi, ca un măslin ale cărui flori au căzut.

He shall fail to bring his grapes to maturity on the vine and shall cast off blossoms like the olive tree.

34 C ăci casa celui nelegiuit va ajunge stearpă, şi cortul omului stricat îl va mînca focul.

For the company of the godless shall be barren, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery (wrong and injustice).

35 E l zămisleşte răul şi naşte răul: în sînul lui coace roade cari -l înşeală.```

They conceive mischief and bring forth iniquity, and their inmost soul hatches deceit.
