1 F ugiţi, copii ai lui Beniamin, fugiţi din mijlocul Ierusalimului, sunaţi din trîmbiţă la Tecoa, ridicaţi un semn la Bet-Hacherem! Căci dela miază-noapte se vede venind o nenorocire şi un mare prăpăd.

Flee for safety, you children of Benjamin, out of the midst of Jerusalem! And blow the trumpet in Tekoa, and raise a signal over Beth-haccherem! For evil is looking forth with eagerness from the north, and great destruction.

2 P e frumoasa şi supţirica fiică a Sionului, o nimicesc!

The comely and delicate one, the Daughter of Zion, I will destroy.

3 L a ea vin păstorii cu turmele lor, îşi întind corturile în jurul ei, şi îşi pasc fiecare partea lui.` -

Shepherds with their flocks shall come against her; they shall pitch their tents round about her; they shall pasture, each one in his place.

4 P regătiţi-vă s'o bateţi! Haidem! Să ne suim ziua nameaza mare!`... Vai de noi, căci ziua scade, şi umbrele de seară se lungesc.``

Prepare yourselves for war against her; up, let us attack her at noon! But alas, the day declines, the evening shadows lengthen.

5 H aidem să ne suim noaptea! Şi să -i dărîmăm casele împărăteşti!`` -

Arise, let us go by night and destroy her palaces!

6 C ăci aşa vorbeşte Domnul oştirilor:, Tăiaţi copaci, şi ridicaţi şanţuri împotriva Ierusalimului! Aceasta este cetatea care trebuie pedepsită; căci în mijlocul ei este numai apăsare.

For the Lord of hosts has said, Hew down her trees and cast up a siege mound against Jerusalem. This is the city which must be punished; there is nothing but oppression within her.

7 C um ţîşnesc apele dintr'o fîntînă, aşa ţîşneşte răutatea ei din ea; nu se aude în ea decît sîlnicie şi prăpăd; durerea şi rănile Îmi izbesc fără curmare privirile.

As a fountain wells up and casts forth its waters and keeps them fresh, so she is casting forth wickedness. Violence and destruction are heard within her; sickness and wounds are continually before Me.

8 I a învăţătură, Ierusalime, ca nu cumva să Mă depărtez de tine, şi să fac din tine un pustiu, o ţară nelocuită!``

Be corrected, reformed, instructed, and warned, O Jerusalem, lest I be alienated and parted from you, lest I make you a desolation, an uninhabited land.

9 A şa vorbeşte Domnul oştirilor:, Vor culege rămăşiţele lui Israel cum se culeg ciorchinile rămase dintr'o vie. Puneţi din nou mîna pe ea, ca şi culegătorul pe mlădiţe.` -

Thus says the Lord of hosts: They shall thoroughly glean as a vine what is left of Israel; turn back your hand again and again into the baskets, like a grape gatherer, and strip the tendrils.

10 C ui să vorbesc, şi pe cine să iau martor ca să m'asculte?` Urechea lor este netăiată împrejur, şi nu sînt în stare să ia aminte. Iată, Cuvîntul Domnului este o ocară pentru ei, şi nu le place de el.

To whom shall I speak and give warning, that they may hear? Behold, their ears are uncircumcised, and they cannot hear or obey. Behold, the word of the Lord has become to them a reproach and the object of their scorn; they have no delight in it.

11 E u sînt aşa de plin de mînia Domnului, că n'o pot opri.`` -,, Toarnă -o peste copilul de pe uliţă, şi peste adunările tinerilor. Căci şi bărbatul şi nevasta vor fi prinşi, şi bătrînul şi cel încărcat de zile.

Therefore I am full of the wrath of the Lord; I am weary of restraining it. I will pour it out on the children in the street and on the gathering of young men together; for even the husband with the wife will be taken, the aged with the very old.

12 C asele lor vor trece în stăpînirea altora, ogoarele şi nevestele lor deasemenea, cînd Îmi voi întinde mîna asupra locuitorilor ţării, zice Domnul.``

And their houses will be turned over to others, their fields and their wives together; for I will stretch out My hand against the inhabitants of the land, says the Lord.

13 C ăci dela cel mai mic pînă la cel mai mare, toţi sînt lacomi de cîştig; dela prooroc pînă la preot, toţi înşală.

For from the least of them even to the greatest of them, everyone is given to covetousness (to greed for unjust gain); and from the prophet even to the priest, everyone deals falsely.

14 L eagă în chip uşuratic rana fiicei poporului Meu, zicînd:, Pace! Pace!` Şi totuş nu este pace!

They have healed also the wound of the daughter of My people lightly and neglectfully, saying, Peace, peace, when there is no peace.

15 S înt daţi de ruşine, căci săvîrşesc urîciuni; şi totuş nu roşesc, şi nu ştiu de ruşine. De aceea vor cădea împreună cu ceice cad, vor fi răsturnaţi, cînd îi voi pedepsi, zice Domnul.``

Were they brought to shame because they had committed abominations (extremely disgusting and vile things)? No, they were not at all ashamed, nor could they blush. Therefore they shall fall among those who fall; at the time that I punish them they shall be overthrown, says the Lord.

16 A şa vorbeşte Domnul:,, Staţi în drumuri, uitaţi-vă, şi întrebaţi cari sînt cărările cele vechi, care este calea cea bună: umblaţi pe ea, şi veţi găsi odihnă pentru sufletele voastre!`` Dar ei răspund:,, Nu vrem să umblăm pe ele!``

Thus says the Lord: Stand by the roads and look; and ask for the eternal paths, where the good, old way is; then walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk in it!

17 A m pus nişte străjeri peste voi:, Fiţi cu luare aminte la sunetul trîmbiţei!`` Dar ei răspund:,, Nu vrem să fim cu luare aminte!``

Also I set watchmen over you, saying, Hear and obey the sound of the trumpet! But they said, We will not listen or obey.

18 D eaceea, ascultaţi, neamuri, şi luaţi seama la ce li se va întîmpla, adunare a poporelor!

Therefore hear, O nations, and know, O congregation, what to them.

19 A scultă şi tu, pămîntule! Iată, voi aduce peste poporul acesta o nenorocire, care va fi rodul gîndurilor lui; căci n'au luat aminte la Cuvintele Mele, şi au nesocotit Legea Mea.

Hear, O earth: behold, I am bringing evil upon this people, the fruit of their thoughts (their schemes and devices) because they have not listened and obeyed My words, and as for My law, they have rejected it.

20 C e nevoie am Eu de tămîia care vine din Seba, de trestia mirositoare dintr'o ţară depărtată? Arderile voastre de tot nu-Mi plac, şi jertfele voastre nu-Mi sînt plăcute.``

To what purpose does frankincense come to Me from Sheba and the sweet cane from a far country? Your burnt offerings are not acceptable, nor are your sacrifices sweet or pleasing to Me.

21 D eaceea, aşa vorbeşte Domnul:,, Iată, voi pune înaintea poporului acestuia nişte pietre de poticnire, de cari se vor lovi împreună părinţi şi fii, vecini şi prieteni, şi vor pieri.``

Therefore thus says the Lord: Behold, I will lay stumbling blocks before this people. And the fathers and the sons together will stumble against them; the neighbor and his friend will perish.

22 A şa vorbeşte Domnul:, Iată că vine un popor din ţara dela miază-noapte, un neam mare se ridică dela marginile pămîntului.

Thus says the Lord: Behold, a people is coming from the north country, and a great nation is arousing itself from the ends of the earth.

23 E i poartă arc şi suliţă; sînt cumpliţi şi fără milă; glasul lor urlă ca marea; sînt călări pe cai, şi gata de luptă ca un om pregătit de război, împotriva ta, fiică a Sionului!`

They lay hold on bow and spear; they are cruel (ruthless and inhuman) and have no mercy. Their voice sounds like the roaring sea; they ride on horses, every one set in array as a man for battle against you, O Daughter of Zion!

24 L a vuietul apropierii lor, mîinile ni se slăbesc, ne apucă groaza, ca durerea unei femei care naşte.``

We have heard the report of it; our hands become feeble and helpless. Anguish has taken hold of us, pangs like that of a woman in childbirth.

25 N u ieşiţi în ogoare, şi nu mergeţi pe drumuri! Căci acolo este sabia vrăjmaşului, răspîndind spaima de jur împrejur!

Go not out into the field nor walk on the road, for the enemy is armed with the sword; terror is on every side.

26 F iica poporului meu, acopere-te cu un sac şi tăvăleşte-te în cenuşă, jăleşte-te ca după singurul tău fiu, varsă lacrămi, lacrămi amare! Căci pe neaşteptate vine pustiitorul peste noi.``

O daughter of my people, gird yourself with sackcloth and wallow in ashes; make mourning as for an only son, a most bitter lamentation, for the destroyer will suddenly come upon us.

27 T e pusesem de pază peste poporul Meu, ca o cetăţuie, ca să le cunoşti şi să le cercetezi calea.

I have set you as an assayer and a prover of ore among My people, that you may know and try their doings and be like a watchtower.

28 T oţi sînt nişte răzvrătiţi, nişte bîrfitori, aramă şi fer, toţi sînt nişte stricaţi.

They are all the worst of rebels and utter and total revolters against God, going about publishing slander. They are bronze and iron; they are all corrupters.

29 F oalele ard, plumbul este topit de foc; degeaba curăţesc, căci zgura nu se deslipeşte.``

The bellows blow fiercely, the lead is consumed by the fire; in vain do they continue refining, for the wicked are not removed.

30 D e aceea se vor numi argint lepădat, căci Domnul i -a lepădat.``

Men will call them reprobate and rejected silver, because the Lord has rejected them.
