1 E u sînt omul care a văzut suferinţa supt nuiaua urgiei Lui.

I am the man who has seen affliction under the rod of His wrath.

2 E l m'a dus, m'a mînat în întunerec, şi nu în lumină.

He has led me and brought me into darkness and not light.

3 N umai împotriva mea îşi întinde şi îşi întoarce mîna, toată ziua.

Surely He has turned away from me; His hand is against me all the day.

4 M i -a prăpădit carnea şi pielea, şi mi -a zdrobit oasele.

My flesh and my skin has He worn out and made old; He has shattered my bones.

5 A făcut zid împrejurul meu, şi m'a înconjurat cu otravă şi durere.

He has built up against me and surrounded me with bitterness, tribulation, and anguish.

6 M ă aşează în întunerec, ca pe cei morţi pentru totdeauna.

He has caused me to dwell in dark places like those long dead.

7 M 'a înconjurat cu un zid, ca să nu ies; m'a pus în lanţuri grele.

He walled me in so that I cannot get out; He has weighted down my chain.

8 S ă tot strig şi să tot cer ajutor, căci El tot nu-mi primeşte rugăciunea.

Even when I cry and shout for help, He shuts out my prayer.

9 M i -a astupat calea cu pietre cioplite, şi mi -a strîmbat cărările.

He has enclosed my ways with hewn stone; He has made my paths crooked.

10 M ă pîndeşte ca un urs şi ca un leu într'un loc ascuns.

He is to me like a bear lying in wait, and like a lion in secret places.

11 M i -a abătut căile, şi apoi s'a aruncat pe mine, şi m'a pustiit.

He has turned me off my ways and pulled me in pieces; He has made me desolate.

12 Ş i -a încordat arcul, şi m'a pus ţintă săgeţii Lui.

He has bent His bow and set me as a mark for the arrow.

13 Î n rărunchi mi -a înfipt săgeţile din tolba Lui.

He has caused the arrows of His quiver to enter into my heart.

14 A m ajuns de rîsul poporului meu, şi toată ziua sînt pus în cîntece de batjocură de ei.

I have become a derision to all my people, and their singsong all the day.

15 M 'a săturat de amărăciune, m'a îmbătat cu pelin.

He has filled me with bitterness; He has made me drink to excess and until drunken with wormwood.

16 M i -a sfărîmat dinţii cu pietre, m'a acoperit cu cenuşă.

He has also broken my teeth with gravel (stones); He has covered me with ashes.

17 M i-ai luat pacea, şi nu mai cunosc fericirea.

And You have bereaved my soul and cast it off far from peace; I have forgotten what good and happiness are.

18 Ş i am zis:,, S'a dus puterea mea de viaţă, şi nu mai am nici o nădejde în Domnul.``

And I say, Perished is my strength and my expectation from the Lord.

19 G îndeşte-Te la necazul şi suferinţa mea, la pelin şi la otravă!``

remember my affliction and my misery, my wandering and my outcast state, the wormwood and the gall.

20 C înd îşi aduce aminte sufletul meu de ele, este mîhnit în mine.

My soul has them continually in remembrance and is bowed down within me.

21 I ată ce mai gîndesc în inima mea, şi iată ce mă face să mai trag nădejde:

But this I recall and therefore have I hope and expectation:

22 B unătăţile Domnului nu s'au sfîrşit, îndurările Lui nu sînt la capăt,

It is because of the Lord’s mercy and loving-kindness that we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not.

23 c i se înoiesc în fiecare dimineaţă. Şi credincioşia Ta este atît de mare!

They are new every morning; great and abundant is Your stability and faithfulness.

24 D omnul este partea mea de moştenire,`` zice sufletul meu; de aceea nădăjduiesc în El.

The Lord is my portion or share, says my living being (my inner self); therefore will I hope in Him and wait expectantly for Him.

25 D omnul este bun cu cine nădăjduieşte în El, cu sufletul care -L caută.

The Lord is good to those who wait hopefully and expectantly for Him, to those who seek Him.

26 B ine este să aştepţi în tăcere ajutorul Domnului.

It is good that one should hope in and wait quietly for the salvation (the safety and ease) of the Lord.

27 E ste bine pentru om să poarte un jug în tinereţa lui.

It is good for a man that he should bear the yoke in his youth.

28 S ă stea singur şi să tacă, pentrucă Domnul i l -a pus pe grumaz;

Let him sit alone uncomplaining and keeping silent, because has laid upon him.

29 s ă-şi umple gura cu ţărînă, şi să nu-şi peardă nădejdea;

Let him put his mouth in the dust —there may yet be hope.

30 s ă dea obrazul celui ce -l loveşte, şi să se sature de ocări.

Let him give his cheek to the One Who smites him; let him be filled with reproach.

31 C ăci Domnul nu leapădă pentru totdeauna.

For the Lord will not cast off forever!

32 C i, cînd mîhneşte pe cineva, Se îndură iarăş de el, după îndurarea Lui cea mare:

But though He causes grief, yet will He be moved to compassion according to the multitude of His loving-kindness and tender mercy.

33 c ăci El nu necăjeşte cu plăcere, nici nu mîhneşte bucuros pe copiii oamenilor.

For He does not willingly and from His heart afflict or grieve the children of men.

34 C înd se calcă în picioarele toţi prinşii de război ai unei ţări,

To trample and crush underfoot all the prisoners of the earth,

35 c înd se calcă dreptatea omenească în faţa Celui Prea Înalt,

To turn aside and deprive a man of his rights before the face of the Most High or a superior,

36 c înd este nedreptăţit un om în pricina lui, nu vede Domnul?

To subvert a man in his cause— the Lord does not approve.

37 C ine a spus şi s'a întîmplat ceva fără porunca Domnului?

Who is he who speaks and it comes to pass, if the Lord has not authorized and commanded it?

38 N u iese din gura Celui Prea Înalt răul şi binele?

Is it not out of the mouth of the Most High that evil and good both proceed ?

39 D e ce să se plîngă omul cît trăieşte? Ficare să se plîngă mai bine de păcatele lui!

Why does a living man sigh ? a man complain for the punishment of his sins?

40 S ă luăm seama la umbletele noastre, să le cercetăm, şi să ne întoarcem la Domnul.

Let us test and examine our ways, and let us return to the Lord!

41 S ă ne înălţăm şi inimile cu mînile spre Dumnezeu din cer, zicînd:

Let us lift up our hearts and our hands to God in heaven:

42 A m păcătuit, am fost îndărătnici, şi nu ne-ai iertat!``

We have transgressed and rebelled and You have not pardoned.

43 Î n mînia Ta, Te-ai ascuns, şi ne-ai urmărit, ai ucis fără milă.

You have covered Yourself with wrath and pursued and afflicted us; You have slain without pity.

44 T e-ai învăluit într'un nor, ca să nu străbată la Tine rugăciunea noastră.

You have covered Yourself with a cloud so that no prayer can pass through.

45 N e-ai făcut de batjocură şi de ocară printre popoare.

You have made us offscouring and refuse among the nations.

46 T oţi vrăjmaşii noştri deschid gura împotriva noastră.

All our enemies have gaped at us and railed against us.

47 D e groază şi de groapă am avut parte, de prăpăd şi pustiire.

Fear and pitfall have come upon us, devastation and destruction.

48 Ş ivoaie de apă îmi curg din ochi din pricina prăpădului fiicei poporului meu.

My eyes overflow with streams of tears because of the destruction of the daughter of my people.

49 M i se topeşte ochiul în lacrămi, necurmat şi fără răgaz,

My eyes overflow continually and will not cease

50 p înăce Domnul va privi din cer şi va vedea.

Until the Lord looks down and sees from heaven.

51 M ă doare ochiul de plîns pentru toate fiicele cetăţii mele.

My eyes cause me grief at the fate of all the maidens of my city.

52 C ei ce mă urăsc fără temei, m'au gonit ca pe o pasăre.

I have been hunted down like a bird by those who were my enemies without cause.

53 V oiau să-mi nimicească viaţa într'o groapă, şi au aruncat cu pietre în mine.

They destroyed my life in the dungeon (pit) and cast a stone above me.

54 M i-au năvălit apele peste cap şi ziceam:,, Sînt perdut!``

The waters ran down on my head; I said, I am gone.

55 D ar am chemat Numele Tău, Doamne, din fundul gropii.

I called upon Your name, O Lord, out of the depths of the dungeon.

56 T u mi-ai auzit glasul:,, Nu-Ţi astupa urechea la suspinurile şi strigătele mele.``

You heard my voice: hide not Your ear at my prayer for relief.

57 Î n ziua cînd Te-am chemat, Te-ai apropiat, şi ai zis:,, Nu te teme!``

You drew near on the day I called to You; You said, Fear not.

58 D oamne, Tu ai apărat pricina sufletului meu, mi-ai răscumpărat viaţa!

O Lord, You have pleaded the causes of my soul; You have rescued and redeemed my life!

59 D oamne, ai văzut apăsarea mea: fă-mi dreptate.

O Lord, You have seen my wrong; judge and maintain my cause.

60 A i văzut toate răzbunările lor, toate uneltirile lor împotriva mea.

You have seen all their vengeance, all their devices against me.

61 D oamne, le-ai auzit ocările, toate uneltirile împotriva mea,

You have heard their reproach and revilings, O Lord, and all their devices against me—

62 c uvîntările protivnicilor mei, şi planurile pe cari le urzeau în fiecare zi împotriva mea.

The lips and thoughts of my assailants are against me all day long.

63 U ită-Te cînd stau ei jos sau cînd se scoală. Eu sînt cîntecul lor de batjocură.

Look at their sitting down and their rising up; I am their singsong.

64 R ăsplăteşte-le, Doamne, după faptele mînilor lor!

Render to them a recompense, O Lord, according to the work of their hands.

65 Î mpetreşte-le inima, şi aruncă blestemul Tău împotriva lor!

You will give them hardness and blindness of heart; Your curse will be upon them.

66 U rmăreşte -i, în mînia Ta, şi şterge -i de supt ceruri, Doamne!``

You will pursue and afflict them in anger and destroy them from under Your heavens, O Lord.
