1 T ot pămîntul avea o singură limbă şi aceleaşi cuvinte.

And the whole earth was of one language and of one accent and mode of expression.

2 P ornind ei înspre răsărit, au dat peste o cîmpie în ţara Şinear; şi au descălecat acolo.

And as they journeyed eastward, they found a plain (valley) in the land of Shinar, and they settled and dwelt there.

3 Ş i au zis unul către altul:,, Haidem! să facem cărămizi, şi să le ardem bine în foc.`` Şi cărămida le -a ţinut loc de piatră, iar smoala le -a ţinut loc de var.

And they said one to another, Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly. So they had brick for stone, and slime (bitumen) for mortar.

4 S i au mai zis:,, Haidem! să ne zidim o cetate şi un turn al cărui vîrf să atingă cerul, şi să ne facem un nume, ca să nu fim împrăştiaţi pe toată faţa pămîntului.``

And they said, Come, let us build us a city and a tower whose top reaches into the sky, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered over the whole earth.

5 D omnul S'a pogorît să vadă cetatea şi turnul, pe care -l zideau fiii oamenilor.

And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.

6 Ş i Domnul a zis:,, Iată, ei sînt un singur popor, şi toţi au aceeaş limbă; şi iacă de ce s'au apucat; acum nimic nu i-ar împedeca să facă tot ce şi-au pus în gînd.

And the Lord said, Behold, they are one people and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do, and now nothing they have imagined they can do will be impossible for them.

7 H aidem! să Ne pogorîm şi să le încurcăm acolo limba, ca să nu-şi mai înţeleagă vorba unii altora.``

Come, let Us go down and there confound (mix up, confuse) their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.

8 Ş i Domnul i -a împrăştiat de acolo pe toată faţa pămîntului; aşa că au încetat să zidească cetatea.

So the Lord scattered them abroad from that place upon the face of the whole earth, and they gave up building the city.

9 D e aceea cetatea a fost numită Babel, căci acolo a încurcat Domnul limba întregului pămînt, şi de acolo i -a împrăştiat Domnul pe toată faţa pămîntului.

Therefore the name of it was called Babel—because there the Lord confounded the language of all the earth; and from that place the Lord scattered them abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

10 I ată spiţa neamului lui Sem. La vîrsta de o sută de ani, Sem a născut pe Arpacşad, la doi ani după potop.

This is the history of the generations of Shem. Shem was 100 years old when he became the father of Arpachshad, two years after the flood.

11 D upă naşterea lui Arpacşad, Sem a trăit cincisute de ani; şi a născut fii şi fiice.

And Shem lived after Arpachshad was born 500 years and had other sons and daughters.

12 L a vrîsta de treizeci şi cinci de ani, Arpacşad a născut pe Şelah.

When Arpachshad had lived 35 years, he became the father of Shelah.

13 D upă naşterea lui Şelah, Arpacşad a mai trăit patrusute trei ani; şi a născut fii şi fiice.

Arpachshad lived after Shelah was born 403 years and had other sons and daughters.

14 L a vrîsta de treizeci de ani, Şelah a născut pe Eber.

When Shelah had lived 30 years, he became the father of Eber.

15 D upă naşterea lui Eber, Şelah a mai trăit patrusute trei ani; şi a născut fii şi fiice.

Shelah lived after Eber was born 403 years and had other sons and daughters.

16 L a vîrsta de treizeci şi patru de ani, Eber a născut pe Peleg.

When Eber had lived 34 years, he became the father of Peleg.

17 D upă naşterea lui Peleg, Eber a mai trăit patrusute treizeci de ani; şi a născut fii şi fiice.

And Eber lived after Peleg was born 430 years and had other sons and daughters.

18 L a vîrsta de treizeci de ani, Peleg a născut pe Reu.

When Peleg had lived 30 years, he became the father of Reu.

19 D upă naşterea lui Reu, Peleg a mai trăit douăsute nouă ani; şi a născut fii şi fiice.

And Peleg lived after Reu was born 209 years and had other sons and daughters.

20 L a vîrsta de treizeci şi doi de ani, Reu a născut pe Serug.

When Reu had lived 32 years, he became the father of Serug.

21 D upă naşterea lui Serug, Reu a mai trăit douăsute şapte ani; şi a născut fii şi fiice.

And Reu lived after Serug was born 207 years and had other sons and daughters.

22 L a vîrsta de treizeci de ani, Serug a născut pe Nahor.

When Serug had lived 30 years, he became the father of Nahor.

23 D upă naşterea lui Nahor, Serug a mai trăit două sute de ani; şi a născut fii şi fiice.

And Serug lived after Nahor was born 200 years and had other sons and daughters.

24 L a vîrsta de douăzeci şi nouă de ani, Nahor a născut pe Terah.

When Nahor had lived 29 years, he became the father of Terah.

25 D upă naşterea lui Terah, Nahor a mai trăit o sută nouăsprezece ani; şi a născut fii şi fiice.

And Nahor lived after Terah was born 119 years and had other sons and daughters.

26 L a vîrsta de şaptezeci de ani, Terah a născut pe Avram, pe Nahor şi pe Haran.

After Terah had lived 70 years, he became the father of, Abram and Nahor and Haran,.

27 I ată spiţa neamului lui Terah. Terah a născut pe Avram, pe Nahor şi pe Haran. -Haran a născut pe Lot.

Now this is the history of the descendants of Terah. Terah was the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran was the father of Lot.

28 Ş i Haran a murit în faţa tatălui său Terah, în ţara în care se născuse, în Ur în Haldea. -

Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldees.

29 A vram şi Nahor şi-au luat neveste. Numele nevestei lui Avram era Sarai, şi numele nevestei lui Nahor era Milca, fiica lui Haran, tatăl Milcăi şi Iscăi.

And Abram and Nahor took wives. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran the father of Milcah and Iscah.

30 S arai era stearpă: n'avea copii deloc.

But Sarai was barren; she had no child.

31 T erah a luat pe fiul său Avram, şi pe Lot, fiul lui Haran, fiul fiului său, şi pe Sarai, noru-sa, nevasta fiului său Avram. Au ieşit împreună din Ur din Haldea, ca să meargă în ţara Canaan. Au venit pînăla Haran, şi s'au aşezat acolo.

And Terah took Abram his son, Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife, and they went forth together to go from Ur of the Chaldees into the land of Canaan; but when they came to Haran, they settled there.

32 Z ilele lui Terah au fost de două sute cinci ani; şi Terah a murit în Haran.

And Terah lived 205 years; and Terah died in Haran.
