1 V ai de cununa îngîmfată a beţivilor lui Efraim, de floarea veştejită, care este strălucirea podoabei sale, pe culmea văii mănoase a celor ce se îmbată!

Woe to the crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim, and to the fading flower of its glorious beauty, which is on the head of the rich valley of those overcome and smitten down with wine!

2 I ată că vine dela Domnul, un om tare şi puternic, ca o furtună de piatră, ca o vijelie nimicitoare, ca o rupere de nori cu mari şivoaie de ape, care o doboară cu putere la pămînt.

Behold, the Lord has a strong and mighty one; like a tempest of hail, a destroying storm, like a flood of mighty overflowing waters, he will cast it down to the earth with violent hand.

3 V a fi călcată în picioare, cununa îngîmfată a beţivilor lui Efraim;

With feet the proud crown of the drunkards of Ephraim will be trodden down.

4 ş i floarea veştejită, care este strălucirea podoabei ei, pe culmea văii mănoase, va fi ca o smochină timpurie care se vede înainte de culesul roadelor şi pe care, abia o iei în mînă, şi îndată o şi înghiţi.

And the fading flower of its glorious beauty, which is on the head of the rich valley, will be like the early fig before the fruit harvest, which, when anyone sees it, he snatches and eats it up greedily at once.

5 Î n ziua aceea, Domnul oştirilor va fi o cunună strălucitoare şi o podoabă măreaţă pentru rămăşiţa poporului,

in that '> Messianic] day the Lord of hosts shall become a crown of glory and a diadem of beauty to the remnant of His people,

6 s au: un duh de dreptate pentru cel ce şade pe scaunul de judecată, şi o putere pentru cei ce dau pe vrăjmaş înapoi pînă la porţile lui.

And a spirit of justice to him who sits in judgment and administers the law, and strength to those who turn back the battle at the gate.

7 D ar şi ei, se clatină de vin, şi băuturile tari îi ameţesc; preoţi şi prooroci sînt îmbătaţi de băuturi tari, sînt stăpîniţi de vin, au ameţeli din pricina băuturilor tari; se clatină cînd proorocesc, se poticnesc cînd judecă.

But even these reel from wine and stagger from strong drink: the priest and the prophet reel from strong drink; they are confused from wine, they stagger and are gone astray through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble when pronouncing judgment.

8 T oate mesele sînt pline de vărsături murdare, şi nu mai este nici un loc curat. -

For all the tables are full of filthy vomit, so that there is no place that is clean.

9 E i zic:,, Pe cine vrea el să înveţe înţelepciunea? Cui vrea să dea învăţături? Unor copii înţărcaţi de curînd, luaţi dela ţîţă?

To whom will He teach knowledge? And whom will He make to understand the message? Those who are babies, just weaned from the milk and taken from the breasts?

10 C ăci dă învăţătură peste învăţătură, învăţătură peste învăţătură, poruncă peste poruncă, poruncă peste poruncă, puţin aici, puţin acolo.`` -

For it is: precept upon precept, precept upon precept, rule upon rule, rule upon rule; here a little, there a little.

11 E i bine! Prin nişte oameni cu buze bîlbăitoare şi cu vorbirea străină va vorbi poporului acestuia Domnul.

No, but by men with stammering lips and another tongue will He speak to this people.

12 E l îi zicea:,, Iată odihna; lăsaţi pe cel ostenit să se odihnească; iată locul de odihnă!`` Dar ei n'au vrut să asculte,

To these had said, This is the true rest that you shall give to the weary, and, This is the refreshing—yet they would not listen.

13 ş i pentru ei cuvîntul Domnului va fi:,,Învăţătură peste învăţătură, învăţătură peste învăţătură, poruncă peste poruncă, poruncă peste poruncă, puţin aici, puţin acolo``, ca mergînd, să cadă pe spate şi să se zdrobească, să dea în laţ şi să fie prinşi.

Therefore the word of the Lord will be to them: precept upon precept, precept upon precept, rule upon rule, rule upon rule; here a little, there a little—that they may go and fall backward, and be broken and snared and taken.

14 D e aceea ascultaţi Cuvîntul Domnului, batjocoritorilor, cari stăpîniţi peste poporul acesta din Ierusalim!

Therefore hear the word of the Lord, you scoffers who rule this people in Jerusalem!

15 P entrucă ziceţi:,, Noi am făcut un legămînt cu moartea, am făcut o învoială cu locuinţa morţilor: cînd va trece urgia apelor năvălitoare, nu ne va atinge, căci avem ca loc de scăpare neadevărul şi ca adăpost minciuna!``

Because you have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with Sheol (the place of the dead) we have an agreement—when the overflowing scourge passes through, it will not come to us, for we have made lies our refuge, and in falsehood we have taken shelter.

16 d eaceea, aşa vorbeşte Domnul, Dumnezeu:,, Iată, pun ca temelie în Sion o piatră, o piatră încercată, o piatră de preţ, piatră din capul unghiului clădirii, temelie puternică; cel ce o va lua ca sprijin, nu se va grăbi să fugă.

Therefore thus says the Lord God, Behold, I am laying in Zion for a foundation a Stone, a tested Stone, a precious Cornerstone of sure foundation; he who believes (trusts in, relies on, and adheres to that Stone) will not be ashamed or give way or hasten away.

17 V oi face din neprihănire o lege, şi din dreptate o cumpănă; şi grindina va surpa locul de scăpare al neadevărului, şi apele vor îneca adăpostul minciunii.

I will make justice the measuring line and righteousness the plummet; and hail will sweep away the refuge of lies, and waters will overwhelm the hiding place (the shelter).

18 A şa că legămîntul vostru cu moartea va fi nimicit, şi învoiala voastră cu locuinţa morţilor nu va dăinui. Cînd va trece urgia apelor năvălitoare, veţi fi striviţi de ea.

And your covenant with death shall be annulled, and your agreement with Sheol (the place of the dead) shall not stand; when the overwhelming scourge passes through, then you will be trodden down by it.

19 O ri de cîte ori va trece, vă va apuca; căci va trece în toate dimineţile, zi şi noapte, şi numai vuietul ei vă va îngrozi.``

As often as it passes through, it will take you; for morning by morning will it pass through, by day and by night. And it will be utter terror merely to hear and comprehend the report and the message of it.

20 P atul va fi prea scurt, ca să te întinzi în el, şi învelitoarea prea îngustă, ca să te înveleşti cu ea.

For the bed is too short for a man to stretch himself on and the covering too narrow for him to wrap himself in.

21 C ăci Domnul Se va scula ca la muntele Peraţim, şi Se va mînia ca în valea Gabaonului, ca să-Şi facă lucrarea, lucrarea Lui ciudată, ca să-Şi împlinească lucrul, lucrul Lui nemaiauzit.

For the Lord will rise up as on Mount Perazim, He will be wrathful as in the Valley of Gibeon, that He may do His work, His strange work, and bring to pass His act, His strange act.

22 A cum, nu batjocoriţi, ca nu cumva să vi se strîngă mai tare legăturile; căci am aflat dela Domnul, Dumnezeul oştirilor, că nimicirea întregei ţări este hotărîtă.

Now therefore do not be scoffers, lest the bands which bind you be made strong; for a decree of destruction have I heard from the Lord God of hosts upon the whole land and the whole earth.

23 P lecaţi-vă urechea, şi ascultaţi glasul meu! Fiţi cu luare aminte, şi ascultaţi cuvîntul meu!

Give ear and hear my voice; listen and hear my words.

24 C el ce ară pentru sămănătură, ară oare necontenit? Necontenit îşi brăzdează şi îşi grăpează el pămîntul?

Does he who plows for sowing plow continually? Does he continue to plow and harrow the ground after it is smooth?

25 O are după ce a netezit faţa pămîntului, nu aruncă el măzăriche şi samănă chimen? Nu pune el grîul în rînduri, orzul într'un loc deosebit, şi alacul pe margini?

When he has leveled its surface, does he not cast abroad dill or fennel and scatter cummin, and put the wheat in rows, and barley in its intended place, and spelt as the border?

26 D umnezeul lui l -a învăţat să facă aşa, El i -a dat aceste învăţături.

for his God instructs him correctly and teaches him.

27 M ăzărichea nu se treieră cu leasa, şi roata carului nu trece peste chimen; ci măzărichea se bate cu băţul, şi chimenul cu nuiaua.

For dill is not threshed with a sharp threshing instrument, nor is a cartwheel rolled over cummin; but dill is beaten off with a staff, and cummin with a rod.

28 G rîul se bate, dar nu se bate necontenit; împingi peste el roata carului şi caii, dar nu -l sfărîmi.

Does one crush bread grain? No, he does not thresh it continuously. But when he has driven his cartwheel and his horses over it, he scatters it without having crushed it.

29 Ş i lucrul acesta vine dela Domnul oştirilor; minunat este planul Lui, şi mare este înţelepciunea Lui.``

This also comes from the Lord of hosts, Who is wonderful in counsel excellent in wisdom and effectual working.
