1 Т огда ответил Элифаз из Темана:

Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered,

2 – Отвечает ли мудрый знанием, взятым с ветра, наполняет ли свой живот палящим вихрем?

Should a wise man utter such windy knowledge and fill himself with the east wind ?

3 В озражает ли он пустыми словами, речами, в которых нет прока?

Should he reason with unprofitable talk? Or with speeches with which he can do no good?

4 А ты и страх перед Богом потерял, и молитву к Богу считаешь малостью.

Indeed, you are doing away with fear, and you are hindering and diminishing meditation and devotion before God.

5 Т вой грех побуждает твои уста, ты усвоил язык нечестивых.

For your iniquity teaches your mouth, and you choose the tongue of the crafty.

6 Т вои же уста обвиняют тебя, не я; губы твои против тебя свидетельствуют.

Your own mouth condemns you, and not I; yes, your own lips testify against you.

7 Р азве ты родился первым человеком? Разве ты был создан раньше холмов?

Are you the first man that was born ? Or were you created before the hills?

8 Р азве подслушал ты Божий замысел? Разве ты сам постиг мудрость?

Were you present to hear the secret counsel of God? And do you limit wisdom to yourself?

9 Ч то знаешь ты, чего бы мы не знали? Что понимаешь, чего бы мы не поняли?

What do you know that we know not? What do you understand that is not equally clear to us?

10 С нами седовласые и старики, старше, чем твой отец.

Among us are both the gray-haired and the aged, older than your father by far.

11 Р азве мало тебе утешений Божьих, добрых слов, что тебе сказали?

Are God’s consolations too trivial for you? Is there any secret thing (any bosom sin) which you have not given up? were we too gentle toward you to be effective?

12 П очему увлекает тебя твое сердце, почему сверкают твои глаза,

Why does your heart carry you away ? And why do your eyes flash,

13 т ак что ты обратил против Бога свой дух, что твой рот выговаривает такие слова?

That you turn your spirit against God and let words go out of your mouth?

14 К то такой человек, чтобы чистым быть, и рожденный женщиной, чтобы быть праведным?

What is man, that he could be pure and clean? And he who is born of a woman, that he could be right and just?

15 Е сли Бог и святым Своим не доверяет, и в глазах Его нечисты небеса,

Behold, puts no trust in His holy ones; indeed, the heavens are not clean in His sight—

16 т о тем более нечист и порочен человек, который пьет неправду, словно воду! Судьба нечестивых

How much less that which is abominable and corrupt, a man who drinks iniquity like water?

17 П ослушай меня, и я объясню тебе; расскажу тебе то, что видел,

I will show you, hear me; and that which I have seen I will relate,

18 т о, о чем говорили мудрецы, не скрывая усвоенного от отцов

What wise men have not hid but have freely communicated; it was told to them by their fathers,

19 ( им одним земля была отдана, и чужой среди них не ходил).

Unto whom alone the land was given, and no stranger intruded or passed among them.

20 В се дни свои мучается нечестивый, отсчитаны все годы притеснителя.

The wicked man suffers with torment all his days, through all the years that are numbered and laid up for him, the oppressor.

21 В его ушах – гул ужаса; средь мира к нему приходит губитель.

A sound of terrors is in his ears; in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.

22 О т мглы он не надеется спастись; он обречен на меч.

He believes that he will not return out of darkness, and he is waited for by the sword.

23 О н – скиталец, пища для стервятника. Он знает, что день мрака близок.

He wanders abroad for food, saying, Where is it? He knows that the day of darkness and destruction is already close upon him.

24 Б еда и горе его пугают; теснят, словно царь, что готов на битву,

Distress and anguish terrify him; they shall prevail against him, like a king ready for battle.

25 з а то, что простер против Бога руку и Всемогущему бросил вызов,

Because he has stretched out his hand against God and bids defiance and behaves himself proudly against the Almighty,

26 ш ел на Него упрямо и дерзко с толстым крепким щитом.

Running stubbornly against Him with a thickly ornamented shield;

27 З а то, что он жиром покрыл лицо, жир нарастил он у себя на бедрах,

Because he has covered his face with his fat, adding layers of fat on his loins,

28 о н поселится в городах разоренных, в домах, в которых никто не живет, в домах, обреченных на разрушение.

And has lived in desolate cities and in houses which no man should inhabit, which were destined to become heaps;

29 О н больше не будет богатым: богатство его расточится, и владения его не расширятся по земле.

He shall not be rich, neither shall his wealth last, neither shall his produce bend to the earth nor his possessions be extended on the earth.

30 О н не спасется от мглы, пламя иссушит ветви его, и дыхание уст Божьих умчит его прочь.

He shall not depart out of darkness shall consume him as flame consumes a dry tree, and by the blast of His mouth he shall be swept away.

31 П усть он не обманывается, полагаясь на пустоту, ведь пустота и будет ему воздаянием.

Let him not deceive himself and trust in vanity (emptiness, falseness, and futility), for these shall be his recompense.

32 О н получит сполна, прежде чем придет его время, и не будут его ветви зеленеть.

It shall be accomplished and paid in full while he still lives, and his branch shall not be green.

33 О н сбросит незрелый виноград, как лоза, и растеряет свои цветы, как маслина.

He shall fail to bring his grapes to maturity on the vine and shall cast off blossoms like the olive tree.

34 Б есплодным будет безбожных сборище, и огонь истребит шатры вымогателей.

For the company of the godless shall be barren, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery (wrong and injustice).

35 О ни зачали горе и родили беду, их сердце полно коварства.

They conceive mischief and bring forth iniquity, and their inmost soul hatches deceit.
