1 О тож, має срібло своє джерело, і є місце для золота, де його чистять,

Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place for gold where they refine it.

2 з алізо береться із пороху, з каменя мідь виплавляється.

Iron is taken out of the earth, and copper is smelted from the stone ore.

3 Л юдина кладе для темноти кінця, і докраю досліджує все, і шукає каміння у темряві та в смертній тіні:

Man sets an end to darkness, and he searches out the farthest bounds for the ore buried in gloom and deep darkness.

4 л амає в копальні далеко від мешканця; забуті ногою людини, висять місця, віддалені від чоловіка.

Men break open shafts away from where people sojourn, in places forgotten by foot; and, hanging afar from men, they swing or flit to and fro.

5 З емля хліб із неї походить, а під нею порито, немов би огнем,

As for the earth, out of it comes bread, but underneath there is blasting, turning it up as by fire.

6 м ісце сапфіру каміння її, й порох золота в ній.

Its stones are the bed of sapphires; it holds dust of gold.

7 С тежка туди не знає її хижий птах, її око орлине не бачило,

That path no bird of prey knows, and the falcon’s eye has not seen it.

8 н е ступала по ній молода звірина, не ходив нею лев.

The proud beasts have not trodden it, nor has the fierce lion passed over it.

9 Ч оловік свою руку по кремінь витягує, гори від кореня перевертає,

Man puts forth his hand upon the flinty rock; he overturns the mountains by the roots.

10 п робиває у скелях канали, і все дороге бачить око його!

He cuts out channels and passages among the rocks; and his eye sees every precious thing.

11 В ін загачує ріки від виливу, а заховані речі виводить на світло.

binds the streams so that they do not trickle, and the thing that is hidden he brings forth to light.

12 Т а де мудрість знаходиться, і де місце розуму?

But where shall Wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?

13 Л юдина не знає ціни їй, і вона у країні живих не знаходиться.

Man knows not the price of it; neither is it found in the land of the living.

14 Б езодня говорить: Вона не в мені! і море звіщає: Вона не зо мною!

The deep says, is not in me; and the sea says, It is not with me.

15 Щ ирого золота дати за неї не можна, і не важиться срібло ціною за неї.

It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price of it.

16 Н е важать за неї офірського золота, ні дорогого оніксу й сапфіру.

It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir, in the precious onyx or beryl, or the sapphire.

17 З олото й скло не рівняються в вартості їй, і її не зміняти на посуд із щирого золота.

Gold and glass cannot equal, nor can it be exchanged for jewels or vessels of fine gold.

18 К оралі й кришталь і не згадуються, а набуток премудрости ліпший за перли!

No mention shall be made of coral or of crystal; for the possession of Wisdom is even above rubies or pearls.

19 Н е рівняється їй етіопський топаз, і не важиться золото щире за неї.

The topaz of Ethiopia cannot compare with it, nor can it be valued in pure gold.

20 А мудрість ізвідки проходить, і де місце розуму?

From where then does Wisdom come? And where is the place of understanding?

21 Б о вона від очей усього живого захована, і від птаства небесного скрита вона.

It is hidden from the eyes of all living, and knowledge of it is withheld from the birds of the heavens.

22 А ваддон той і смерть промовляють: Ушима своїми ми чули про неї лиш чутку!

Abaddon (the place of destruction) and Death say, We have heard the report of it with our ears.

23 Т ільки Бог розуміє дорогу її, й тільки Він знає місце її!

God understands the way and He knows the place of it.

24 Б о Він аж на кінці землі придивляється, бачить під небом усім.

For He looks to the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens.

25 К оли Він чинив вагу вітрові, а воду утворював мірою,

When He gave to the wind weight or pressure and allotted the waters by measure,

26 к оли Він уставу складав для дощу та дороги для блискавки грому,

When He made a decree for the rain and a way for the lightning of the thunder,

27 т оді Він побачив її та про неї повів, міцно поставив її та її дослідив!

Then He saw and declared it; He established it, yes, and searched it out.

28 І сказав Він людині тоді: Таж страх Господній це мудрість, а відступ від злого це розум!

But to man He said, Behold, the reverential and worshipful fear of the Lord—that is Wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.
