1 А коли Аталія, мати Ахазії, побачила, що помер її син, то встала та й вигубила все цареве насіння.

When Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the royal descendants.

2 А Єгошева, дочка царя Йорама, сестра Ахазії, взяла Йоаша, сина Ахазії, та й викрала його з-поміж вбиваних царських синів, його та няньку його, і сховала в спальній кімнаті. І сховали його від Аталії, і він не був забитий.

But Jehosheba, the daughter of King Jehoram, sister of Ahaziah, stole Joash son of Ahaziah from among the king’s sons, who were to be slain, even him and his nurse, and hid them from Athaliah in an inner storeroom for beds; so he was not slain.

3 І ховався він із нею в Господньому домі шість років, а Аталія царювала над краєм.

Joash was with his nurse hidden in the house of the Lord for six years. And Athaliah reigned over the land.

4 А сьомого року послав Єгояда, і взяв сотників із карійців та бігунів, і привів їх до себе до Господнього дому, і склав із ними умову, і заприсягнув їх у Господньому домі, і показав їм царського сина.

In the seventh year Jehoiada sent for the captains over hundreds of the Carites and of the guards or runners and brought them to him to the house of the Lord and made a covenant with them and took an oath from them in the house of the Lord and showed them the king’s son.

5 І він наказав їм, говорячи: Оце та річ, яку зробите. Третина з вас, що приходите в суботу, будете виконувати сторожу царського дому.

And he commanded them, saying, This is the thing you shall do: a third of you who come in on the Sabbath shall keep watch of the king’s house,

6 А третина буде в брамі Сур, а третина у брамі за бігунами, і будете виконувати сторожу дому на зміну.

A third shall be at the gate Sur, and a third at the gate behind the guard. So you shall keep watch of the palace and be a barrier.

7 А дві частині з вас, усі, що відходять у суботу, будуть виконувати сторожу Господнього дому при цареві.

And two divisions of all you who should go off duty on the Sabbath shall keep the watch of the house of the Lord to the king.

8 І оточите царя навколо, кожен із своєю зброєю в руці своїй; а хто ввійшов би до рядів, нехай буде забитий. І будете ви з царем при виході його та при вході його.

You shall surround the king, every man with his weapons in his hand. And let anyone who breaks through the ranks be put to death. You be with the king when he goes out and when he comes in.

9 І зробили сотники все, що наказав священик Єгояда. І взяли кожен людей своїх, що приходять у суботу та виходять у суботу, і прийшли до священика Єгояди.

The captains over the hundreds did all that Jehoiada the priest commanded; and they took every man his men who were to come on duty on the Sabbath with those who should go off duty on the Sabbath, and came to Jehoiada the priest.

10 І дав священик сотникам списи та щити, що належали цареві Давидові, що були в Господньому домі.

To the captains over hundreds the priest gave the spears and shields that had been King David’s, which were in the house of the Lord.

11 І поставали бігуни, кожен зо зброєю своєю в руці своїй, від правого боку дому аж до лівого боку дому, при жертівнику та при домі, навколо біля царя.

And the guards stood, every man with his weapons in his hand, from the right corner to the left corner of the temple area, along by the altar and the temple proper.

12 А він вивів царевого сина, і поклав на нього корону та нараменники. І зробили вони його царем, і помазали його, і вдарили в долоні та й крикнули: Нехай живе цар!

And Jehoiada brought out the king’s son and put the crown on him and gave him the Testimony; and they proclaimed him king and anointed him, and they clapped their hands and said, Long live the king!

13 І почула Аталія голос бігунів та народу, і прийшла до народу до Господнього дому.

When Athaliah heard the noise of the guards and the people, she went into the house of the Lord to the people.

14 І побачила вона, аж ось цар стоїть за звичаєм на помості, а при царі зверхники та сурми, а ввесь народ краю тішиться та сурмить у сурми. І роздерла Аталія шати свої та й крикнула: Зрада, зрада!

When she looked, there stood the king by the pillar, as was customary, and the captains and the trumpeters beside the king, with all the people of the land rejoicing and blowing trumpets. And Athaliah rent her clothes and cried, Treason! Treason!

15 А священик Єгояда наказав сотникам, поставленим над військом, і сказав до них: Випровадьте її поза ряди, а хто піде за нею, того забийте мечем! Бо священик сказав: Нехай вона не буде забита в Господньому домі!

Then Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of hundreds set over the army and said to them, Take her forth outside the ranks, and him who follows her kill with the sword. For the priest had said, Let her not be slain in the house of the Lord.

16 І зробили їй прохід, і вона прийшла Кінським входом до царського дому, і там була забита.

They seized her, and she went through the horses’ entrance to the king’s house, and there she was slain.

17 І склав Єгояда заповіта між Господом та між царем і між народом, щоб був народом Господнім, і між царем та між народом.

And Jehoiada made a covenant between the Lord, the king, and the people that they would be the Lord’s people—and also between the king and the people.

18 І ввійшов увесь народ Краю до Ваалового дому, та й порозбивали його та жертівники його, і бовванів його зовсім поламали, а Маттана, Ваалового священика, убили перед жертівниками. А при Господньому домі священик поставив варти.

Then all the people of the land went to the house of Baal and destroyed it. His altar and his images they broke completely in pieces, and Mattan the priest of Baal they slew before the altars. And the priest appointed watchmen to guard the house of the Lord.

19 І взяв він сотників і карійців, і бігунів та ввесь народ краю, і вивели царя з Господнього дому. І ввійшли вони через браму бігунів до царського дому, і той сів на царському троні.

Then he took the rulers over hundreds, the captains, the guard, and all the people of the land, and they brought the king down from the house of the Lord and came by way of the guards’ gate to the king’s house. And Joash was seated on the throne of the kings.

20 І тішився ввесь народ краю, а місто заспокоїлось. А Аталію вбили мечем у царському домі.

So all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet after Athaliah had been slain with the sword beside the king’s house.

21 ( 12-1) Єгоаш був віку семи років, коли зацарював.

Joash was seven years old when he began to reign.
