1 М ій сину, якщо поручився ти за свого ближнього, дав руку свою за чужого,

My son, if you have become security for your neighbor, if you have given your pledge for a stranger or another,

2 т и попався до пастки з-за слів своїх уст, схоплений ти із-за слів своїх уст!

You are snared with the words of your lips, you are caught by the speech of your mouth.

3 У чини тоді це, сину мій, та рятуйсь, бо впав ти до рук свого ближнього: іди, впади в порох, і на ближніх своїх напирай,

Do this now, my son, and deliver yourself when you have put yourself into the power of your neighbor; go, bestir and humble yourself, and beg your neighbor.

4 н е дай сну своїм очам, і дрімання повікам своїм,

Give not sleep to your eyes, nor slumber to your eyelids;

5 р ятуйся, як серна, з руки, і як птах із руки птахолова!

Deliver yourself, as a roe or gazelle from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.

6 І ди до мурашки, лінюху, поглянь на дороги її й помудрій:

Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider her ways and be wise!—

7 н ема в неї володаря, ані урядника, ані правителя;

Which, having no chief, overseer, or ruler,

8 в она заготовлює літом свій хліб, збирає в жнива свою їжу.

Provides her food in the summer and gathers her supplies in the harvest.

9 А ж доки, лінюху, ти будеш вилежуватись, коли ти зо сну свого встанеш?

How long will you sleep, O sluggard? When will you arise out of your sleep?

10 Щ е трохи поспати, подрімати ще трохи, руки трохи зложити, щоб полежати,

Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to lie down and sleep—

11 і прийде, немов волоцюга, твоя незаможність, і злидні твої, як озброєний муж!...

So will your poverty come like a robber or one who travels and your want like an armed man.

12 Л юдина нікчемна, чоловік злочинний, він ходить з лукавими устами,

A worthless person, a wicked man, is he who goes about with a perverse (contrary, wayward) mouth.

13 в ін моргає очима своїми, шургає своїми ногами, знаки подає пальцями своїми,

He winks with his eyes, he speaks by shuffling or tapping with his feet, he makes signs and teaches with his fingers.

14 в його серці лукавство виорює зло кожночасно, сварки розсіває,

Willful and contrary in his heart, he devises trouble, vexation, and evil continually; he lets loose discord and sows it.

15 т ому нагло приходить погибіль його, буде раптом побитий і ліку нема!

Therefore upon him shall the crushing weight of calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken, and that without remedy.

16 О цих шість ненавидить Господь, а ці сім то гидота душі Його:

These six things the Lord hates, indeed, seven are an abomination to Him:

17 о чі пишні, брехливий язик, і руки, що кров неповинну ллють,

A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

18 с ерце, що плекає злочинні думки, ноги, що сквапно біжать на лихе,

A heart that manufactures wicked thoughts and plans, feet that are swift in running to evil,

19 с відок брехливий, що брехні роздмухує, і хто розсіває сварки між братів!

A false witness who breathes out lies, and he who sows discord among his brethren.

20 С тережи, сину мій, заповідь батька свого, і не відкидай науки матері своєї!

My son, keep your father’s commandment and forsake not the law of your mother.

21 П рив'яжи їх на серці своєму назавжди, повісь їх на шиї своїй!

Bind them continually upon your heart and tie them about your neck.

22 В она буде провадити тебе у ході, стерегтиме тебе, коли будеш лежати, а пробудишся мовити буде до тебе!

When you go, they shall lead you; when you sleep, they shall keep you; and when you waken, they shall talk with you.

23 Б о заповідь Божа світильник, а наука то світло, дорога ж життя то навчальні картання,

For the commandment is a lamp, and the whole teaching is light, and reproofs of discipline are the way of life,

24 щ об тебе стерегти від злосливої жінки, від облесливого язика чужинки.

To keep you from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a loose woman.

25 Н е жадай її вроди у серці своїм, і тебе хай не візьме своїми повіками,

Lust not after her beauty in your heart, neither let her capture you with her eyelids.

26 б о вартість розпусної жінки то боханець хліба, а жінка заміжня вловлює душу цінну...

For on account of a harlot a man is brought to a piece of bread, and the adulteress stalks and snares the precious life.

27 Ч и візьме людина огонь на лоно своє, і одіж її не згорить?

Can a man take fire in his bosom and his clothes not be burned?

28 Ч и буде людина ходити по вугіллю розпаленому, і не попаляться ноги її?

Can one go upon hot coals and his feet not be burned?

29 Т ак і той, хто вчащає до жінки свого ближнього: не буде некараним кожен, хто доторкнеться до неї!

So he who cohabits with his neighbor’s wife; he who touches her shall not be innocent or go unpunished.

30 Н е погорджують злодієм, якщо він украде, щоб рятувати життя своє, коли він голодує,

Men do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy himself when he is hungry;

31 т а як буде він знайдений, всемеро він відшкодує, віддасть все майно свого дому!

But if he is found out, he must restore seven times; he must give the whole substance of his house.

32 Х то чинить перелюб, не має той розуму, він знищує душу свою,

But whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks heart and understanding (moral principle and prudence); he who does it is destroying his own life.

33 п обої та сором він знайде, а ганьба його не зітреться,

Wounds and disgrace will he get, and his reproach will not be wiped away.

34 б о заздрощі лютість мужчини, і не змилосердиться він у день помсти:

For jealousy makes man furious; therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.

35 в ін не зверне уваги на жоден твій викуп, і не схоче, коли ти гостинця прибільшиш!

He will not consider any ransom; neither will he be satisfied, though you offer him many gifts and bribes.
