1 O íd esta palabra, porque yo levanto endecha sobre vosotros, Casa de Israel.

Hear this word which I take up concerning you in lamentation, O house of Israel:

2 C ayó la virgen de Israel, no más podrá levantarse; dejada fue sobre su tierra, no hay quien la levante.

The Virgin of Israel has fallen; she shall no more rise; she lies cast down and forsaken on her land; there is no one to raise her up.

3 P orque así dijo el Señor DIOS: La ciudad que sacaba mil, quedará con ciento; y la que sacaba ciento, quedará con diez, en la casa de Israel.

For thus says the Lord God: The city that went forth a thousand shall have a hundred left, and that which went forth a hundred shall have ten left to the house of Israel.

4 P ero así dijo el SEÑOR a la Casa de Israel: Buscadme, y vivid;

For thus says the Lord to the house of Israel: Seek Me and you shall live!

5 y no busquéis a Bet-el ni entréis en Gilgal, ni paséis a Beerseba; porque Gilgal será llevada en cautiverio, y Bet-el será deshecha.

But seek not Bethel nor enter into Gilgal, and pass not over to Beersheba; for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity and exile, and Bethel shall become Beth-aven and come to nothing.

6 B uscad al SEÑOR, y vivid; no sea que hienda, como fuego, a la Casa de José, y la consuma, sin haber en Bet-el quien lo apague.

Seek the Lord and you shall live, lest He rush down like fire upon the house of Joseph and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Bethel.

7 L os que convierten en ajenjo el juicio, y dejan de hacer la justicia en la tierra,

You who turn justice into wormwood and cast righteousness (uprightness and right standing with God) down to the ground,

8 m iren al que hace el Arcturo y el Orión, y las tinieblas vuelve en mañana, y hace oscurecer el día en noche; el que llama a las aguas del mar, y las derrama sobre la faz de la tierra; el SEÑOR es su nombre;

Seek Him Who made the Pleiades and Orion, Who turns the shadow of death or deep darkness into the morning and darkens the day into night, Who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out upon the face of the earth—the Lord is His name—

9 q ue da esfuerzo al despojador sobre el fuerte, y que el despojador venga contra la fortaleza.

Who causes sudden destruction to flash forth upon the strong so that destruction comes upon the fortress.

10 E llos aborrecieron en la puerta al reprensor, y al que hablaba lo recto abominaron.

They hate him who reproves in the gate, and they abhor him who speaks uprightly.

11 P or tanto, puesto que vejáis al pobre y recibís de él carga de trigo; edificasteis casas de sillares, mas no las habitaréis; plantasteis hermosas viñas, mas no beberéis el vino de ellas.

Therefore because you tread upon the poor and take from him exactions of wheat, you have built houses of hewn stone, but you shall not dwell in them; you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine.

12 P orque he sabido de vuestras muchas rebeliones, y de vuestros grandes pecados, que afligen al justo, y reciben rescate, y a los pobres en la puerta hacen perder su causa.

For I know how manifold are your transgressions and how mighty are your sins—you who afflict the righteous, who take a bribe, and who turn aside the needy in the gate from their right.

13 P or tanto, el prudente en tal tiempo calla, porque el tiempo es malo.

Therefore he who is prudent will keep silence in such a time, for it is an evil time.

14 B uscad lo bueno, y no lo malo, para que viváis; porque así el SEÑOR Dios de los ejércitos será con vosotros, como decís.

Seek (inquire for and require) good and not evil that you may live, and so the Lord, the God of hosts, will be with you, as you have said.

15 A borreced el mal, y amad el bien, y poned juicio en la puerta; por ventura el SEÑOR, Dios de los ejércitos, tendrá piedad del remanente de José.

Hate the evil and love the good and establish justice in the gate. It may be that the Lord, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.

16 P or tanto, así dijo el SEÑOR, el Dios de los ejércitos, el Señor: En todas las plazas habrá llanto, y en todas las calles dirán: ¡Ay! ¡ay! Y al labrador llamarán a lloro, y a endecha a los que endechar supieren.

Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, the Lord: There shall be wailing in all the broad ways, and in all the streets they shall say, Alas! Alas! And they shall call the farmers to mourning and such as are skilled in lamentation to wailing.

17 Y en todas las viñas habrá llanto; porque pasaré por medio de ti, dijo el SEÑOR.

And in all vineyards there shall be wailing, for I will pass through the midst of you, says the Lord.

18 ¡ Ay de los que desean el día del SEÑOR! ¿Para qué queréis este día del SEÑOR? Será de tinieblas, y no de luz;

Woe to you who desire the day of the Lord! Why would you want the day of the Lord? It is darkness and not light;

19 c omo el que huye de delante del león, y se topa con el oso; o si entrare en casa y arrimare su mano a la pared, y le muerda la culebra.

It is as if a man fled from a lion and a bear met him, or went into the house and leaned with his hand against the wall and a serpent bit him.

20 ¿ No será el día del SEÑOR tinieblas, y no luz; oscuridad, que no tiene resplandor?

Shall not the day of the Lord be darkness, not light? Even very dark with no brightness in it?

21 A borrecí, abominé vuestras solemnidades, y no me darán buen olor vuestras asambleas.

I hate, I despise your feasts, and I will not smell a savor or take delight in your solemn assemblies.

22 Y si me ofreciereis vuestros holocaustos y vuestros presentes, no los recibiré; ni miraré a los sacrificios pacíficos de vuestros engordados.

Though you offer Me your burnt offerings and your cereal offerings, I will not accept them, neither will I look upon the peace or thank offerings of your fatted beasts.

23 Q uita de mí la multitud de tus cantares, que no escucharé las salmodias de tus instrumentos.

Take away from Me the noise of your songs, for I will not listen to the melody of your harps.

24 A ntes corra el juicio como las aguas, y la justicia como impetuoso arroyo.

But let justice run down like waters and righteousness as a mighty and ever-flowing stream.

25 ¿ Por ventura me ofrecisteis sacrificios y presente en el desierto en cuarenta años, casa de Israel?

Did you bring to Me sacrifices and cereal offerings during those forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?

26 Y ofrecisteis a Moloc vuestro rey, y a Quiún vuestros ídolos, la estrella de vuestros dioses que os hicisteis.

but you carried about the tent of your king Sakkuth and Kaiwan, your images of your star-god which you made for yourselves.

27 O s haré, pues, transportar más allá de Damasco, dijo el SEÑOR, cuyo Nombre es Dios de los ejércitos.

Therefore I will cause you to go into exile beyond Damascus, says the Lord, whose name is the God of hosts.
