1 ¶ Y en el año quince del imperio de Tiberio César, siendo gobernador de Judea Poncio Pilato, y Herodes tetrarca de Galilea, y su hermano Felipe tetrarca de Iturea y de la provincia de Traconite, y Lisanias tetrarca de Abilinia,

In the fifteenth year of Tiberius Caesar’s reign—when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene—

2 s iendo sumos sacerdotes Anás y Caifás, vino Palabra de Dios sobre Juan, hijo de Zacarías, en el desierto.

In the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the Word of God '> concerning the attainment through Christ of salvation in the kingdom of God] came to John son of Zachariah in the wilderness (desert).

3 Y él vino por toda la tierra alrededor del Jordán predicando el bautismo del arrepentimiento para la remisión de pecados;

And he went into all the country round about the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance ( of hearty amending of their ways, with abhorrence of past wrongdoing) unto the forgiveness of sin.

4 c omo está escrito en el libro de las palabras del profeta Isaías que dice: Voz del que clama en el desierto: Aparejad el camino del Señor, Haced derechas sus sendas.

As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make His beaten paths straight.

5 T odo valle se rellenará, y se bajará todo monte y collado; y los caminos torcidos serán enderezados, y los caminos ásperos allanados;

Every valley and ravine shall be filled up, and every mountain and hill shall be leveled; and the crooked places shall be made straight, and the rough roads shall be made smooth;

6 y verá toda carne la Salud de Dios.

And all mankind shall see (behold and understand and at last acknowledge) the salvation of God (the deliverance from eternal death decreed by God).

7 Y decía a los de la multitud que salía para ser bautizados de él: ¡ Oh generación de víboras! ¿Quién os enseñó a huir de la ira que vendrá?

So he said to the crowds who came out to be baptized by him, You offspring of vipers! Who secretly warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

8 H aced, pues, frutos dignos de arrepentimiento, y no comencéis a decir en vosotros mismos: Tenemos a Abraham por padre; porque os digo que puede Dios, aun de estas piedras, levantar hijos a Abraham.

Bear fruits that are deserving and consistent with repentance '> conduct worthy of a heart changed, a heart abhorring sin]. And do not begin to say to yourselves, We have Abraham as our father; for I tell you that God is able from these stones to raise up descendants for Abraham.

9 Y ya también el hacha está puesta a la raíz de los árboles; todo árbol pues que no hace buen fruto, es cortado, y echado en el fuego.

Even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees, so that every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and cast into the fire.

10 Y ellos le preguntaban, diciendo: ¿Pues qué haremos?

And the multitudes asked him, Then what shall we do?

11 Y respondiendo, les dijo: El que tiene dos túnicas, dé al que no tiene; y el que tiene qué comer, haga lo mismo.

And he replied to them, He who has two tunics (undergarments), let him share with him who has none; and he who has food, let him do it the same way.

12 Y vinieron también publicanos para ser bautizados, y le dijeron: Maestro, ¿qué haremos?

Even tax collectors came to be baptized, and they said to him, Teacher, what shall we do?

13 Y él les dijo: No exijáis más de lo que os está ordenado.

And he said to them, Exact and collect no more than the fixed amount appointed you.

14 Y le preguntaron también los soldados, diciendo: Y nosotros, ¿qué haremos? Y les dijo: No oprimáis, ni acuseis falsamente a nadie; y estad contentos con vuestros salarios.

Those serving as soldiers also asked him, And we, what shall we do? And he replied to them, Never demand or enforce by terrifying people or by accusing wrongfully, and always be satisfied with your rations (supplies) and with your allowance (wages).

15 ¶ Y estando el pueblo esperando, y pensando todos de Juan en sus corazones, si él sería el Cristo,

As the people were in suspense and waiting expectantly, and everybody reasoned and questioned in their hearts concerning John, whether he perhaps might be the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One).

16 r espondió Juan, diciendo a todos: Yo, a la verdad, os bautizo en agua; mas viene quien es más poderoso que yo, de quien no soy digno de desatar la correa de sus zapatos; él os bautizará en Espíritu Santo y fuego;

John answered them all by saying, I baptize you with water; but He Who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of Whose sandals I am not fit to unfasten. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

17 s u aventador está en su mano, y limpiará su era, y juntará el trigo en su alfolí, y la paja quemará en fuego que nunca se apagará.

His winnowing shovel (fork) is in His hand to thoroughly clear and cleanse His floor and to gather the wheat and store it in His granary, but the chaff He will burn with fire that cannot be extinguished.

18 Y amonestando, muchas otras cosas anunciaba el Evangelio al pueblo.

So with many other appeals and admonitions he preached the good news (the Gospel) to the people.

19 E ntonces Herodes el tetrarca, siendo reprendido por él a causa de Herodías, mujer de Felipe su hermano, y de todas las maldades que había hecho Herodes,

But Herod the tetrarch, who had been told about his fault and reproved with rebuke producing conviction by for Herodias, his brother’s wife, and for all the wicked things that Herod had done,

20 a ñadió también esto sobre todo, que encerró a Juan en la cárcel.

Added this to them all—that he shut up John in prison.

21 ¶ Y aconteció que, cuando todo el pueblo se bautizaba, también Jesús fue bautizado; y orando, el cielo se abrió,

Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened

22 y descendió el Espíritu Santo sobre él en forma corporal, como paloma, y fue hecha una voz del cielo que decía: TÚ eres mi Hijo amado, en ti es mi placer.

And the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came from heaven, saying, You are My Son, My Beloved! In You I am well pleased and find delight!

23 Y el mismo Jesús comenzaba a ser como de treinta años, hijo de José, como se creía; que fue hijo de Elí,

Jesus Himself, when He began, was about thirty years of age, being the Son, as was supposed, of Joseph, the son of Heli,

24 q ue fue de Matat, que fue de Leví, que fue de Melqui, que fue de Jana, que fue de José,

The son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph,

25 q ue fue de Matatías, que fue de Amós, que fue de Nahum, que fue de Esli,

The son of Mattathias, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, the son of Naggai,

26 q ue fue de Nagai, que fue de Maat, que fue de Matatías, que fue de Semei, que fue de José, que fue de Judá,

The son of Maath, the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein, the son of Josech, the son of Joda,

27 q ue fue de Joana, que fue de Resa, que fue de Zorobabel, que fue de Salatiel,

The son of Joanan, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, the son of Neri,

28 q ue fue de Neri, que fue de Melqui, que fue de Adi, que fue de Cosam, que fue de Elmodam, que fue de Er,

The son of Melchi, the son of Addi, the son of Cosam, the son of Elmadam, the son of Er,

29 q ue fue de Josué, que fue de Eliezer, que fue de Jorim, que fue de Matat,

The son of Jesus, the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi,

30 q ue fue de Leví, que fue de Simeón, que fue de Judá, que fue de José, que fue de Jonán, que fue de Eliaquim,

The son of Simeon, the son of Judah, the son of Joseph, the son of Jonam, the son of Eliakim,

31 q ue fue de Melea, que fue de Mainán, que fue de Matata, que fue de Natán,

The son of Melea, the son of Menna, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David,

32 q ue fue de David, que fue de Jessé, que fue de Obed, que fue de Booz, que fue de Salmón, que fue de Naasón,

The son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Salmon (Sala), the son of Nahshon,

33 q ue fue de Aminadab, que fue de Aram, que fue de Esrom, que fue de Fares,

The son of Aminadab, the son of Admin, the son of Arni, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah,

34 q ue fue de Judá, que fue de Jacob, que fue de Isaac, que fue de Abraham, que fue de Taré, que fue de Nacor,

The son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor,

35 q ue fue de Serug, que fue de Ragau, que fue de Peleg, que fue de Heber,

The son of Serug, the son of Reu, the son of Peleg, the son of Eber, the son of Shelah,

36 q ue fue de Sala, que fue de Cainán, que fue de Arfaxad, que fue de Sem, que fue de Noé, que fue de Lamec,

The son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech,

37 q ue fue de Matusalén, que fue de Enoc, que fue de Jared, que fue de Mahalaleel,

The son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalaleel, the son of Cainan,

38 q ue fue de Cainán, que fue de Enós, que fue de Set, que fue de Adán, que fue de Dios.

The son of Enos, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.
